@ShawDAMAN & maxhansendk - Yes you are correct in saying there have been many opera singers with excellent, you might almost say 'perfect' technique. However Tebaldi and many others were inspired by Deanna. Deanna studied opera and that was her ambition, to become an opera singer. I had read an interview once a long time ago where Tebaldi mentioned Deanna Durbin as being an inspiration. So you see, although Deanna never sang opera on stage, she still inspired many opera singers after her time.
@georl1 I'd love to see that interview. They were born only a year apart, so I don't know how true that is. LOL. Case in point: Many singers may be inspired by James Brown even though he was never what some would call a real singer, but what he projected moved people, even TRUE vocalists. If you REALLY want to hear/see this song done "correctly", you want to search Licia Albanese and Leontyne Price. Listen for inflections, trills, dynamics, etc., even though they have different approaches.
Deanna Durbin,Cantora maravilhosa linda e eu a amei desde meus 13 anos, quando assistia seus filmes, sempre tive vontade de ouvir de novo essa voz, que
Deus a abençoe se ainda estiver viva. Sua fan Glaura.
I have heard and seen many Opera singers sing this famous area from Tosca and my all time favorite has always been Renata Tebaldi. However, as great as Tebaldi was, none can compare with Deanna Durbin's rendition. Her vocal technique surpasses any Opera singer's, past and present. If Deanna would only have continued her career, we would have so many more wonderful memories.
@georl1 "Her vocal technique surpasses any opera singer's, past and present." it's a nice but rather ridiculous assertion... there have been many opera singers with excellent, you might almost say 'perfect' technique. And Deanna Durbin sang opera and had an operatic sound but was not really an 'opera singer' (one who sings live operas on stage as a career.)
@ShawDAMAN I agree...this lady does have a wonderful voice with secure solid technique, obviously a good teacher.but correct me if im wrong i believe she is somewhat like our version today of a classical crossover artist?although far superior vocally than the ones we have today!!!but you cannot compare her to a "real" stage opera singer.i do really enjoy her beautiful voice all the same!
Brava! How popular entertainment has changed! What American film maker would have an aria sung in Italian in a popular film? This film was made when Toscanini conducted the NBC radio orchestra to an audience of millions.
Thanks for posting this wonderful rendition and the English translation from Puccini's masterpiece, TOSCA. THE AMAZING MRS HOLLIDAY had two directors, Jean Renoir and Bruce Manning!!
I didn't know that Deanna Durbin continued in film this late in life. She really was good, wasn't she? It seems strange that she didn't have a bigger career.
This was filmed in late 1942, when Durbin was 20. Her first movie was in 1936, the last in 1948. Of the 21 she made - this one, The Amazing Mrs. Holliday, was the exact middle movie - #11.
Diana is a very clear example of the ungrateful Hollywood. Which lost a great artist, maybe today it not will happens... Why? I am not wright?

@georl1 I think you are being carried away...
Tebaldi was a fully educated fantastic opera soprano!
Not many other sopranos can be compared with her powerful and personal voice.
To say that Deanna Durbin (a favourite of mine) was in any way superior to Tebaldi...Well that is just not right!
Salt, pepper, chili, and sugar are all different. But who am I to say which flavour is best?

Sorry--she looks older. I thought this might be at the end of her film career. She sounds wonderful regardless.
