Part of the reason the UN was set up after World War -2 was the prevention of holocausts. Sometimes it's done with sanctions, and in extreme cases like Libya, military action. The fact that we can't do it everywhere at once does not mean nothing should be done to prevent Mad Dog Gaddafi from committing genocide.

I think the final rebel advance on Tripoli will be very similiar to the "Chadian Toyota War" of the 1980s. Libyan rebels racing to Tripoli with pickup trucks with improvised mounted weapons with NATO air support.
Probably have NATO spec forces embeded with the rebels to help coordinate the rebs and guide those JDAMs to the right targets.

While Gaddaffi has plenty more tanks, many of his tanks are not working because of poor maintenance. However, Gaddaffi with some tanks were able to defeat the poorly armed, trained and coordinated rebs.
What is happening now is the rebel forces are consolidating, coordinating and regrouping with the help of NATO military advisers on the ground. Probably getting supplied too.

To me, the issue is clear and simple: no tyrant should be allowed to kill his citizens with impunity in the 21st century. The UN has a "Duty to Protect". Part of the reason the UN was set up after World War -2 was the prevention of holocausts. Sometimes it's done with sanctions, and in extreme cases like Libya, military action. The fact that we can't do it everywhere at once does not mean nothing should be done to prevent Mad Dog Gaddafi from committing genocide.

You know Saudi Arabia also has one party system but they are not the enemy of USA,because they give oil,and people there are much more supresed by gov than Libyans were. I'm not saying a one-party system is a preferable, or even acceptable way to live. And I have wanted to see Gaddafi go for a long time.
But the world is not a simple place, and what we have started calling "Tyrants" and "oppression" in the last 50 years has been the normal run of things for most of human history. Its time should be coming to an end, but the evidence of all previous attempts to force the process, is that it tends to fuck things up much, much, worse.

Would Turkey use force to stop the Kurdish from separating from Turkey? Would Iraq or Iran allow kurds secede? I doubt the US would stand by and allow a state like Texas from seceding either. But toppling governments or secession must all b good if it's done in the name of democracy. That's an internal issue for all these countries but if atrocities are being committed than should US-UK-France go out and attack all these nations?

@miankd According to BBC and Aljazeera it made unconfirmed reports of Tripoli and Benghazi being bombed in Feb 22. The Russian military says they're satellites over the region do not show this. It was a lie.
Lies of atrocities have been used to get US involvement in war. These include incubator babies being tossed to the floor during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. That was false. And genocide being committed Kosovo. That was false.

@VexZeez No one ever claimed Tripoli, nor benghazi was bombarded by ghaddaffi. Tripoli b/c it's where he lives, Benghazi b/c it is too far away. There was however confirmed bombings of Zawiyah, Jdabiah, Mesrata, Tobruk, Zintan and RasLanuf with scores of deaths.
Iraq invasion was pushed by greed, this intervention for once seems to support the people's own will, they are not similar.

Tony Birtley and Anita McNaught have reported magnificently from Libya. While Tony is able to move about and report freely, the same cannot be said for McNaught. She and her fellow reporters are under virtual house arrest in Tripoli and cannot go anywhere unless Daffy sends a bus and some guard dogs. McNaught should get some sort of awards for her reporting. She is incredibly brave.
