@thepuckstopper1 no, this video was shot two years ago. if they were, they'd be probably not be good candidates for resurrection. i think there's a smaller collection of them deeper in the yard because these started getting tagged up pretty bad, but most are no longer there at all.
No, this is a bad sign. Those locomotives are mothballed. the economy is bad enough that rail freight has seen and extreme drop and these engines are not being used. If these were being scrapped there would have been orders for new ones, but no one is buying locomotives right now. About 25% of the locomotives in the US right now are mothballed.
You don't need a broadcast van. A simple polarizing filter, along with short tripod should suffice. If the windshield is clean, the polarizer will remove all glare. You loose what, half an f-stop? On a sunny day, that should not matter.
tripod + car = not going to work. and this isn't a video camera, it's not even a dslr. it's an point-and-shoot digital. i'm not trying to capture every single detail in crystal clarity, just convey a general idea. when i look at it, i can see a long line of locomotives sitting, which is all i was intending to capture.

Next time, try to tape it without the glare and distortion of the windshield. It was impossible to tell what they were.
