And is you've seen the movie, you will understand that it's not that weird that Tyler Durden actually says that self improvement is masturbation, cause that character didn't get that fit from going to a gym or eating a healthy diet.

You see, Norton's character saw Tyler Durden as "all the ways he wish he could be", including that of his looks, so Tyler Durden is pretty much just a sort of "superhuman", in certain ways.
