While reading The Vampire Lestat i often found myself weeping with the realization that her characters have more emotion and passion in one paragraph then i have in my entire body. I have read the Vampire Chronicles, but I always seem to come back to The Vampire Lestat. My copy has been read so many times it's practically falling to bits! I'm not sure why that particular book struck a chord with me, but it has become essential reading and I like the way it's so easy to get lost in that special world you've created.
Anne, I was wondering if you knew Trent Reznor at all, and what he is like? I beleive he was a neighbour of yours. He's my favorite musician. Also, you're my favorite author, I adore every line you've put on paper. Christ the Lord has actually made my connection to God stronger. If that isn't an achievement I don't know what is. Happy Christmas and God Bless.
You're an absolutely beautiful person, Anne, and I love you immeasurably. Thank you for everything you've given me, which is really more than I can express to you in words, more gifts of and to the heart than simply books to me. Ever so much more! I will love you and support you forever, no matter what you choose to do with your gorgeous and unique talent.
The vampire chronicles alone will always hold a special place in my heart, but I respect your wish to move on. I'll move with you!
Wow, just hearing her read that passage gave me chills. Anne--your books, ALL your books, have given me more joy, more appreciation of beauty and spirituality, than almost anything else in this world. For that, I am, and always will be, a devoted fan.
It's such a rare treat to hear a favorite author summarize what her works mean to her. The Chronicles are a series that cannot be read merely once. Read it the first time to see the progression of the story and the characters. The inevitable subsequent go-rounds should be spent reading between the lines. To paraphrase the beloved Lestat: What's wrong with being the best you that you can be?
I don't know why people are always saying that her decision to stop writing for vampires came as such a shock - from the very first time I picked up Interview I could see all the spiritual undertones in it and really CtL is a logical conclusion to all those other works. How can you listen to those words from Armand and not see it? How can you not see the same beauty and spirituality that was //always// there waiting for you to find it?
redcorpse --- thanks. I see the books as all one journey to the light, and to Christ. That's why I treasure the vampire chronicles and have written an essay on them on my website. It's all one trip. I hope readers will begin to see it that way. Thanks for posting, Anne Rice.
What a gift you've given, both to me personally and to the world. My connection to your work is so magical and sacred, and I thank you for it eternally. I see the world now through my vampire eyes and it is even more beautiful than it was before.
How can I ever tell you how much your writing means to me? My fiance and I are enamored of the beauty in your work. It is our one true love. I started reading your work at the age of 9, and I have been hopelessly addicted since. At times, you were even our only solace. When I look at you on video, I can't help feeling sorrow. You seem so disenchanted with the world. I wish I could give you the happiness (no, the restorative light) you have given us in your books.
I miss Armand the most. Poor thing, no body ever talks about him. Anne, if you ever decide to write out one more Lestat book, put Armand in there somewhere.. Maybe kill all of them off so neither you nor your fans will have to worry about them.. Sad but true.
When Anne Rice stopped writing the vampires chronicles...was just like waking up from a beautiful dream to fall in a horrible nightmare. This said,I love and I always will those books and I'll thank her forever for having written them. Thank you.
if her new faith gives her peace of mind then i have no right to speak ill her decisions, and if she's entirely happy that way I wish her all the best. I just really miss Lestat.
(continuing off of what was last said) and i am happy that you do not let your fans define what you will right. for all i care it wouldn't matter if you never even speak of vampires because your fans, old and new, should appreciate what you already left behind. Keep writing what you want to because ,admit it or not, you are a fabulous writer and people should really appreciate what you have done.
1st let me say I love Anne Rice. I grew up reading her novels. I started with Interview & read all her work after that. I loved her vampire novels as well as the mummy, ghost, genie, & witch novels. She was the main reason I developed a love for literature & chose to become a writer. I understand she has moved on but I think it is sad that she has abandoned most of her readers. Many of her former readers miss her characters. Her new books are good but not a replacement for her older works.
Please don't say that I've abandoned my older readers. I answer their emails every day, and I remain fascinated by the response to the vampire novels. There are something like ten of them. I feel that it's a good body of work, frankly, and moving on is what I have to do. But abandon them or the readers? Never. Anne.
Ms. Rice, I have to say that i just started reading The Vampire Chronicles and i am quite infatuated with your writing style. Once i finish the series i am most likely going to read your newest book and no that this is only an evolution and that whatever everyone else is angry about is nonsensical. People do change with the times and many should learn that. i doubt you forgot anyone because not even Marius forgot Lestat during his reawakening.I'm glad that you care enough to respond to your fans
Thanks so much for responding to my post here. I'm a huge fan of yours.... More than you can ever really know. I've read all of your novels not just the Chronicles. I've even read some of your earlier works under other names. I about fell out of my chair when I saw that you had posted a reply to my post. I've always wondered what it would be like to just sit and talk to you. I think you would be an amazing person to chat with. I love the way your mind works and you have (cont.)
influenced my writing. Let me try to explain better what I meant. I should have explained better, I apologize. What meant was that by not writing the Vampire Chronicles some of your fans my feel abandoned. Having made such a connection with your readers, I know you can never abandon them. I think I explained my feelings a bit better in my reply to your post to: From Anne Rice: a message to fans: May 2008. Thank you so much for reading and responding to these and other posts. Troy in Oklahoma
I love her. Even if she is writing Christian books. She's proven so much in this video.
She will return to the dark side. May not go back to writing Vampire books. But her stories, her characters will live with her forever. heheh. I cannot imagine going christian. I love being who I am. I wouldn't change it for anyone. ^_^
Music: Vivaldi's Four Seasons. I agree with you- it's a brilliant piece. I don't know why but I felt really lonely after I'd watched this vid. It's such a shame that word's deprived of Lestat's beauty...
I wish you the best, and I plan to read any more of your books that you write Anne. I to once delved into a less beautiful world... But ironicly, it was the evil, darkness, pain and suffering that eventualy brought me back to the light. As much as I enjoyed reading about Lestat, and would like to read more, I understand that it was a phase. And may the next be better than the last : )
I certainly hope so. *pouts* It's what she's good at it, and no matter what she says, she has turned her back on the past and her readers. At least that's what I feel.
Why can she not do both? Why can she not simply write her Christian novels and the Vampire Chronicles as well? I mean I know none of her old fans read her new works.
And why would they? They're absolutely different! I mean her Christian novels are something my grandparents would read! Her old novels were the best.
Lestat will always live on as a icon so to speak, and there are many fan fictions out there. In a way The idea of Lestat will live on almost as a saint. Similar to the way it was told in Blood Canticle of Saint Juan. Anyway I digress. It is good that Anne is gotten back to her beliefs and is not swayed by the world in her decision.
i dont think its right that anne rice iz canceling out lestat 4 good,he's an enspiering character who,not only helps us,but teaches us a lesson.lestat IZ dracula, cuz he has become our love, life, friend, and hero.what can 1 say but dracula iz dead...LONG MAY LESTAT LIVE!!!
From Anne. I'm sorry but Lestat simply cannot come back. But that does not mean another Christian supernatural series won't be developed by me in the future, in addition to my life of Jesus Christ. This has been on my mind for some time, and C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein both inspire.
Anne, ALL of your books have been inspiring, in different ways... your newest series inspires in a whole new way...YOU keep writing and we'll keep reading! We all have choices to make and paths to take, and you are doing what God wants you to, don't forget that!
Just FYI - Tolkien tried over and over to squash labels calling his work "Christian, or Christian fable or Sauron as Satan, or Gandalf is really Christ" or whatever. Although he and Lewis were colleagues and friends, and Lewis's tales were intentionally Jesus fables, Tolkien's were absolutely not. Tolkien scholars comments, welcome. BTW it still sucks to see Anne away from First Street where I suppose we all thought she would stay forever. Anne has a room of her own- Virginia is surely smiling.
C.S Lewis, and Tolkein, were both great examples of Christian value and morals, written within an amazing fictional and fantasy framework.I was 10 when I sorted out that Aslan was a christ figure, creator and innocent sacrifice for good in Narnia. I was so happy when he was reserected.I loved those books.
"You are also invited to post comments in response to Anne's YouTube films at AnneRiceDotCom (Christian matters) and at annericesite (the earlier works) on YouTube."
I havnt read many of the anne rice books, which im annoyed about cause I really like them. I just never seemed to have gotten round to it. I have read "Interview with the Vampire", "The Vampire Lestat" and currently reading "Blood Canticle". Im shocked at how many of the books ive missed :p. Cant beleive she will stop writing about Lestat!!! Oh ma days. Btw, Ive got a Lestat MV *music video* up. just search my name. :D
anne rice CAN NOT PUT LESTAT AWAY!i refuse it!how can she?!I read all the vampire cronicals INCLUDING the new tales of the vampires.I may only be 11 years old but lestat is my hero!Mt idol! And its because of her im that way.I used to be normal, but bcause of her i now have somthing to look forward to!She cant do it,she just cant!Ms. rice dont get me wrong, but out of all the vampires you made, LESTAT IZ THA BEST!plese dont take him out dont!PLESE!dont do it not yetnow ever not now.Plese dont:(
who would want to see lestat should go to netherlandas to the northen lands to the last city to be found the lost city of den helder the lands end and that of souls
I am not religious but I can understand her reasoning for doing as she is doing. But it's a sad world without the Vampires and the Mayfair Witches in it. When you knew a Vampire Chronicle novel or a Mayfair Witch novel were coming out. It made everything else you were reading seem silly until Anne's new novel came out. It's sad really but I guess that's life.
I for one would love to read about the total and final redemption of Lestat. I always felt it was coming. If you ever do write about this,it will be an exciting event.
I can't believe that she is talking about finally putting Lestat away. I respect her for her work on the Jesus series. But I can't say I'm not disappointed for no more Vampire Chronicles or Mayfair Witches.
Marius is definitely the most admiral vampire of them all, one you would look to as a teacher. I'm currently reading the vampire lestat in french. Ive read them all in english, now that I'm getting bored of the language, I thought it would be more appropriate to read it in french.
My only wish is that Anne resells the rights to The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned to a movie studio that will actually do them justice. IMO, that last QOTD attempt was an nothing more than an insult to Anne, and to all of her fans. Straying from a piece of literature so much in a movie is simply disrespectful, and it only goes to reinforce that Hollywood is as shallow and greedy as ever.
I agree, if done right, The Vampire Lestat would be a very very beautiful movie, full of awesome lighting effects and stunning matte paintings to show the sensory experience emphasized throughout the novel. Aside the visual effects, the characterization gives lots of opportunity. And the horror elements throughout are excellent for a movie. It would be a feast for the screen writer, the director, art directors, costume designers, and of course, the fans.
oh goodness, no kiddin!!!!!!! the movie is all right...IF someone can wrap it around their head, that is NOTHING to do with the book and only happens to use the same character names.

I was fortunate enough to visit the house on First Street over a decade ago while Anne and her family still lived there. Our small group shuffled through her two front rooms her dining room. Seeing the pool and The Oak. I was so sad to learn she had sold that home. It's difficult to watch Anne now - away from New Orleans it just seems unnatural that she is not getting old in a rocker on the front porch on First Street. Change sucks.
That's a really beautiful notion, Anne as a old woman on the porch. I can really imagine that. I went by her house in 2000, unfortunently before reading her witch-books. But still, I feel so at home when reading her novels that take place in New Orleans. Too bad she has turned away from vampires, whough you never know with her and her flings...
That last comment was so rude. If I was a vampire I would come after you. On a higher note, it is so wonderful to listen to Anne read from her own work. I would love to have a unabridged recording of her reading Interview with the Vampire or Memnoch the Devil, two of my favorites. It is so obvious that Anne has been moving towards her Christ books for years. How wildly brave of her to now write in firt person in the voice of God, himself. You are one of a kind, Anne. I love you!
I would love to meet Anne. She seems like such a beautiful person, someone I would not only want to be a friend to but someone I would want to be like. True to herself and her work, always.
I don't find Rice's conversion that surprising. In her works for years her inner debate was quite clear in her writing. In Memnoch, Lestats battle with God and acceptance was such a mirror of her own. All joy to you Anne, for the many years joy you have given me. And looking forward to the new Christ novel.
Never in my life have i heard a more heart felt and truly honest wish. I am proud to say that my life has been changed twice by Anne. First at a book signing in Las Vegas a few years ago, and today after hearing her speak. From darkness into light, my heart now beats, within the darkness I have found life, and once again... I thank you Anne for you love for life and God.
You know its a bit selfish to expect Anne to carry on writing just for you. She's being true to herself and really thats all we can hope for. Try the new books, you might even like them!
Dear One, I turned away from the Chronicles before Stan died. His death had nothing to do with my return to the Catholic church or my consecration to Christ. If Lestat ever returns it will be in a redemptive frame work, in a novel I outlined in 1998 but never wrote. A diabetic coma killed that book. thanks for your feedback, Anne
I just want to embrace that woman i a tightly loved hug. She seem so sad since Stan's passing, God rest his soul. I hope Anne has found happiness and will someday feel joy instead of sorrow when she thinks of her beloved characters.
Dear One, I don't feel sorrow at all when I think of my beloved vampires. All the books are part of one long journey to the light. A current of sadness runs through all my work from Interview through the most recent books on Jesus Christ. Rather inevitable. I thank you for your warm response. Anne.

Dear Mrs. Rice,
How can I ever tell you how much your writing means to me?

I just really miss Lestat.
ajkl27 3 years ago 4

KarmicReaction 3 years ago

Dear Mrs. Rice,
Thanks so much for responding to my post here.

From Anne. I'm sorry but Lestat simply cannot come back. But that does not mean another Christian supernatural series won't be developed by me in the future, in addition to my life of Jesus Christ. This has been on my mind for some time, and C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein both inspire.
AnneRice41 3 years ago
Anne, ALL of your books have been inspiring, in different ways... your newest series inspires in a whole new way...YOU keep writing and we'll keep reading! We all have choices to make and paths to take, and you are doing what God wants you to, don't forget that!
GHFFL1968 3 years ago
Just FYI - Tolkien tried over and over to squash labels calling his work "Christian, or Christian fable or Sauron as Satan, or Gandalf is really Christ" or whatever. Although he and Lewis were colleagues and friends, and Lewis's tales were intentionally Jesus fables, Tolkien's were absolutely not. Tolkien scholars comments, welcome. BTW it still sucks to see Anne away from First Street where I suppose we all thought she would stay forever. Anne has a room of her own- Virginia is surely smiling.
abacab1239 3 years ago
C.S Lewis, and Tolkein, were both great examples of Christian value and morals, written within an amazing fictional and fantasy framework.I was 10 when I sorted out that Aslan was a christ figure, creator and innocent sacrifice for good in Narnia. I was so happy when he was reserected.I loved those books.

ByteSmasher 4 years ago 6
I agree, if done right, The Vampire Lestat would be a very very beautiful movie, full of awesome lighting effects and stunning matte paintings to show the sensory experience emphasized throughout the novel. Aside the visual effects, the characterization gives lots of opportunity. And the horror elements throughout are excellent for a movie. It would be a feast for the screen writer, the director, art directors, costume designers, and of course, the fans.

Change sucks.
abacab1239 4 years ago 5

I love you!

Dear One, I turned away from the Chronicles before Stan died. His death had nothing to do with my return to the Catholic church or my consecration to Christ.
