  • Ahh, at last. This video gets what it deserves: over 1 million views. I remember watching this when it was at 700,000 views....

  • I like both versions personally. The original when feeling mellow and the Manics for a louder more aggressive mood.

  • Green screen at water LOL clasic video toaster effects.

  • i'd love to hear 'the the' rereleased with some modern production thrown at it, and that filmclip was hard to watch

  • Esta es mi canción preferida de todas las que he escuchado.

  • i like this song and i like the movie that has this song in it.

  • 65 people suk

  • The the still sound outstanding after twenty odd years of listening to them

  • @jimmyboyle1000 - word! - Still love it.

  • The the shaped me in an emotional way when I was growing up. Hearing them now is so thought provoking.

  • I like this, and I like the cover version too

  • Mika Hakkinen is really a good singer

  • Hmm. 'radioshrink' is an angry chap. To quote your favourite toff, "Calm down, dear". I was not on the marches - I was looking for a job. Norman Tebbit would not let me borrow his Dad's bike. Let's just agree to watch the unemployment figures climb above three million, and wait for someone to say "unemployment is a price worth paying".May I suggest that you form your opinions from more than just The Daily Mail? They just tell Taxi drivers what stupidity to regurgitate. Your new tag: "toryboy"?

  • canzone stupenda!

  • and by the way, am not a student!! it's ma job

  • Sad to say, but i got here via the Manics version. Which is, in itself an excellent cover but the original is always better somehow. I work in a student union and put this on jukebox and have now heard it since about ten times. Good taste travels through time and brain boxes

  • Remember this from M&M's commercial a few years ago. Catchy tune!

  • I think that your just have to listen to the lyrics, and restart your life accordingly.. This is THE day.

Sometimes, a song or a lyric will just get you going. It did for me. Your life will TRULY change.

  • Good, good!

  • manics version is just garbage , this is the original and best , its like Barrs Irn Bru , copied by many but never as good

  • Manics could never write like Matt Johnson. I was a fan of this song when it was released and when i heard this sone re-released it made me feel sick. People should just rely on their own skills and stop stealing others.

  • @mirrorimagesolutions wah wah - who cares, i bet Matt ohnson doesn't give a shit, so why should you? on his behalf' if you don't like it, don't listen or buy it, then you don't support it, by mentioning it, people are curious. Don't listen to the other one. People have been stealing lyrics and music from the beginning of time - you won't change that.

Dod hearing another version really make you feel sick? wtf are you a student? Probably. ah shame. So delicate -life goes on regardless - yawn.

  • @mirrorimagesolutions I know what you mean, but I'm pretty sure MJ would take this version as generous 'nod' from a bunch of thinking guys with humanity at the front of their minds. I too was a fan of The The, oh, you know when (!), but the backdrop then was Thatcher's 'Lost Generation', a government obsessed by the UK economy and it's 'wealth generators' and uncaring to it's newest would be members. Familiar?

  • @gmikehome Jesus, grow up and get a life...you're no longer a student, defined by how many marches you go on. Margaret Thatcher was a phenomenon. First woman PM, oh, and for the Consevatives...in the 70's!!!! NOT the Labour party (I'm sure that stat really irks!) She dragged Labour-wrecked Britain out of the doldrums and ready to face the 21st Century head on . There is a reason she was the first person in Downing St.after Blair and Brown became PM - A modern legend. FACTS.

  • and i know there's a spelling mistake - so fucking what!!!!

  • who carfes who was best, you're like a bunch of kids. the song rocks, The The did it first, and it was ace, The Manics and anyone following was FOLLOWING. nuff said xx quit arguing, and be grown up ffs. it's music, not fucking rocket science, if you like it you do, if you like another version, then you like another version. grow up. FFS,,, why argue about thos when there are HUGE things going on in the world.??????????????

  • You know what, BE QUIET about the Manics. This is The The's not Manics. You were here to listen to THE THE'S version, if you were for Manics, leave this better version nd watch that bad cover. Lets settle it there.

  • Stop flaming the manics guys, you and I are here to listen to The The's version, not their version. +Really though, the Manics' version is in a completely different style so apart from the lyrics and chords, there's not much to compare. To each their own. :)

  • One of my all time favourite songs, as for the Manic street cleaners, they were, are and always will be cak.

  • Not as good as the Manics version

The manics have made it there own

  • mon dieu have not seen this video in quite awhile lol!

one of my fav 80's records because its great start to finish and you can just let it play over and over.

  • such a great song, for a such hawfull video!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How could you not like any song that says this is the day. Eternal hope.. Great song and lyrics.

  • This is a beautiful song. It sounds like a potentially mainstream song, but I am thankful it isn't. I feel so restless yet at peace when I listen to this, very strange. It feels so melancholy yet upbeat. I guess the song just makes me thankful for the special people in my life. Hell, there I go ramblin' again.

  • YEAAA BOYYYYYY

  • Thumbs up if the M&Ms Commercial brought you here.......

  • @JayCanas84 Thumbs up it Did! I never knew the song's name till the commecial!

  • . . . all the money in the world, couldn't buy back those days

  • Great Song !!! the New Cover by The manic street preachers

    S-U-C-K-S !!!!!

The The Are Much Much Much Much Better

  • @judaica4less wrong!! Manics are a better band

the manics version is more clear and rocky!!

  • @ underneonloneliness2 I have to admit that after hearing the the manics version a few times it sounds better :-)

  • EMPIRE RECORDS YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

  • for such a depressing song it has so many happy memories!!!

  • i've come here cos of the manics too.

great lyrics, it only reached something like 85 in the charts, but is a great song, hopefully with the manics doing a copy more people will see the original.

    all praise the manics. legends.

  • my uncle introduced me to the the at age 9 i'd thank him if he wasnt such a cock !

  • I came here because...I know good frigging music

  • *Sigh*

I came here because a friend of mine, who has excellent taste of music, posted this song on her Facebook page. I am as authentic as they come.

  • I heard a remix of this this morning and its KERRAP! this orig is far better. should have released this again!! To cap it all off the album has dissapeared from my Itunes!

  • It's not just Matt's vocal's.., and song writing that make this song...It is also strongly associated with the instrumentation....( cannot be changed ).........

You simply cannot " dress up " a classic eighties tune using " rock style instruments" and vocals from a rock style band such as " the manics"...,

even with the best of intentions.....( I guess Matt would approve though.......)

  • Comment removed

  • another classic song ruined by a mediocre band, name 'The Manics'!

  • Manics definitely ruined this great song....!!!!

  • @AdrianaQ28 wrong!!

  • ano de 1988.maravilha de ano.

  • Can't stand the manics - but at least they might earn Matt some royalties

  • @mededovic1 well maybe people can't stand your shitty comments

    manics rule!!

  • Yes. Suddenly everyone's here because of the Maniacs. They're not that bad, really. But it's not "their" song.

"All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days".

Now, how old am I if I remember this? Much too old, I guess. But at least when I was young, music was perfect. :)

  • Matt really outdid himself with this song. Shut up about the Manics and listen to this. Please like so everyone can see.

  • manic street preachers should be charged with murder,,,,,, welsh cunts!!!

  • @368Danno you should be charged a £2000000 fine for posting a pointless shitty comment

  • or $1,300,000. either one would work for me Danno

  • MSP covered this because it's a nostalgic sort of song that fits in well with the theme of their latest release which is looking back upon all of their singles. I thought their cover was great.

  • Last scene in EMPIRE RECORDS..... great song.

  • ..the The were seminal for the 80s..and they continued into the 90s..better than Madonna, while not quite Nirvana..still--good tunes-!!..

  • Brings me back to 14yrs old 1984, together like...GLUE.

  • The synth bass is what made this song what it is, in my opinion. A slightly thicker patch is also heard on their song "The Giant." If anyone knows what synths were used on This is the Day or The Giant, I'd love to know.

  • of all the the the songs msp could of covered, ..no

  • YOU GO ACORDIAN GUY. YOU GO.

  • Manics are my favourite band, but this is so, so much better, I'm gutted the manics thought to release a cover, but yeah...

  • The The is fucken amazing...

  • I fucking love this song, and when I saw the Manics were doing it I thought they would fuck it up.......... and they did. They managed to suck the colour from a beautiful song.

I'm a big fan of the old Manics stuff but everything they have done in the last 15 years has been dull and sterile, not least their version of this song. Journal for plague lovers was good though.

  • Gosh shut up by about the Manics We all ready know they are crappy now listen to The The, the classic band that MADE this song. K? Listen to a classic song and a great band.

  • I REMEMBER HATING THE THE WHEN THEY CAME OUT. FUNNY...THEY SOUND GOOD TO ME NOW!~

  • it's so weird to see him with hair

  • The Manics' version of this song is awful - And I love 'em. They sing all the MONEY in the world couldn't bring back the days... the original line is 'BUY' back the days.. which is a better play on words. This original is a pure classic, actually the album is 1983. The The were ace - the version by MSP is frankly crap.

  • @22Phantasm so are you for saying that!!

  • @nellino Sì!

  • sleeping boys catch no fish - leave it alone !

  • Mining finished up in Wales a long time ago...then along come the Manic's searching for 'soul' ...'and squeezed all the juice out until it ran dry'. My 'uncertain smile' is a most definate frown. Why, with such obvious talent cover an already 'perfect' song and become just another symptom of the morale decay thats gnawing at the heart of the music industry..?

  • @martainmiller sweet i agree

  • Nearly a million!

  • Ok, let the Manics cover this but they missed something!

  • @CraigDeth they did NOT!!! Oh Jesus you've ruined my day

  • This is awful. Thank god the manics came along and put some decent music behind it and replaced the terrible vocals.

  • @sullysportsrfc Manics my fucking arse.... The The = CLASS

  • @sullysportsrfc Well done, you're an idiot. And don't come back at me with anything that resembles a retort because I'm a Manics fan, but they have done nothing of any worth for 15 years apart from Journal for Plague Lovers, and they had to resurrect Richey to inject life back into their insipid music. Insipid music for their insipid mainstream fans. It's a shame because they were so fucking good it hurt. Alas after 1996 they lost it.

  • @manicbabyshambles123 well done, you managed to make a you tube account all by yourself because clearly you are disabled. The Manic have done some absolute shite over the last 15 years such as the whole lifeblood and know your enemy albums..but to say they lost it after 1996 is pathetic, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours was a great album which i believe won best album at the brits....idiot

  • @sullysportsrfc Yeah brilliant, you equate winning a Brit award with being good, and you call me disabled? And you congratulate me for creating a Youtube account on this basis, laughable. It's like being teased by a weeping widow.

Stick to your facile music, like the Manics' last album and we'll all be happy. Their last attempt at 'mass communication' was a putrid exercise in how to make music for middle aged men.

  • @manicbabyshambles123 Is your entire purpose in this video to slag off the MSP? What's the point? In fact you should contemplate greater existencial questions about your life and your purpose: is it really just to piss people off on the internet?

  • @cis4aber Is your entire purpose of coming to ukip videos to slag off ukip or.....? lol owned.

  • @Olekander Given that I've just posted in this video; plainly not. You aren't the brightest star in the sky are you?

  • @Olekander well said

  • @cis4aber wow you're dumb.

  • @sullysportsrfc (2) It's apparent that they think by stripping away the compelling nature of the lyrics and music, it will appeal to a large scale audience, which it hasn't, it just seems to have attracted this strange subsection of bland balding men, and if you don't believe me, walk by a queue outside one of their gigs, you can see the shades of grey emanating from them.

  • @sullysportsrfc (3) If the Manics want respect and to sell records to an audience which aren't just boring fickle fairweather fans then they should work hard as artists and not release half baked, over produced versions of classic songs, it's just laziness. No wonder most of the old guard have abandoned them, they're an embarrassment, I cringe watching them on TV now.

  • @manicbabyshambles123 manics have been together for about 25 years now so it is likely that many of their fans are going to be middle aged men, i mean, there middle aged themselves, as much as i hate it with music but you have to move with the times...an album like genneration terrorists wouldnt work today, its the harsh truth im afraid.

  • @manicbabyshambles123 The manics have only covered 2 songs for a single. They have writen loads of songs. Give them a break!!

  • Who cares about the freakin Manic's version. They suck at it..... gosh The The is truly the best band. I love this song and this band.

  • sono ormai 27 anni che ascolto questa canzone quasi quotidianamente però in effetti this is the day

  • @nellino Siete impressionante per ascoltare. La gente deve ascoltare più di questa musica, destra?

  • @AccordionMan101 se la gente sapesse capirebbe in che mani siamo messi

  • I'd pay good money to see Nick Kershaw - sorry Matt Johnson take a beating for this. Oh and have that accordion smashed to bits too #anger

  • @stellaviolens i disagree

  • It would be helpful to put the name of the artist (The The) in the title.

    Stupid cunt.

  • @nolovelost92 A bit ungrateful, the guy uploaded it didn't he? Trolling around here with your Joy Division name and year of birth. I think you should say sorry in someway.

  • when my baby nephew died aged eight months I was 18 and never even been to a funeral let alone seen a dead baby, This song is the reason I am still here. Playing it over and over meant I grieved and eventually healed. I dont care what the manics did, this is the version for me.

  • manic version is crap, stick with this folks!

  • @0FreezeMan0 Your wrong!! Manics version is better

  • @underneonloneliness2-please tell us...I would love to know how you come to that conclusion...

  • Oh and forgot to add how ridiculous the Manics version sounds!! What a mess!!

  • Empire Records! Mmmm Liv Tyler!! I Saw this film when I was about 17, loved the film and this song in particular, found out what the track was called and went straight to Our Price and bought Soul Mining. I still listen to it now and I'm 31. BRILLIANT

  • this song is/was perfect. i was graduating hs when it came out. somehow it described the feeling i had at that time. it was uncanny. the the was one of the best...

  • manics destroyed this

  • He cannot sing. The Manics version is much better.

  • @symonh2000 could you send a link of that version?

  • Been wondering what this song was for beards, boss :)

  • This is the music!!!!

  • i know this is irrelevant but the m&m commercial sent me here and i've loved this song ever since especially the bass...oh btw i'm a 15 year old girl

  • @dancingdreamerful So? Do you want a medal for being 15 and liking this song?

  • @manicbabyshambles123 (ignoring your negativity) yes that would be nice if someone wanted to but i said that because old people love to say how young people have lost hope in real music....and this is my comment so i type whatever the hell i please :)

  • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE MUSIC

    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

  • Came here because of the Manics.

  • @sorathehero82 What's the Manics?

  • @HighRiseChateau another band

  • @sorathehero82 the lyrics are great

  • Seriously, anyone who professes to prefer the Manics version has no right to listen to music.

  • @sfa2 The manics version is better!! The The's Version is too deep and croaky. The manics version has a nice clear voice.

  • @underneonloneliness2 could you send a link of that version?

  • @sfa2 no kidding.. someone saying matt johnson can't sing? wtf?!@? one of the best singers in the history of rock music

  • The manics version is better

  • @Golfclub02

I disagree, even though I love the Manics to death. Their version is still interesting though.

  • @frauleinschwein Yes but the the's version is a bit weak and the singer has a old and croaky voice. The manics one has a nice smooth voice and is more catchy. I normaly prefer orginals but not in this case.

  • Amazing song...memories.x

  • Up close at 2:59

  • Comment removed

  • 57 'souless weasels' now

  • ooooh nice to see the old home town ... eastbourne

  • And shots of Eastbourne in the video too, always a bonus.

  • Can't wait to hear the Manics' version of this song. Has James taken up the accordion??

  • This song is that good, Youtube haven't gave me any more Suggestions along the right hand side.

  • This is such a bittersweet-sounding song. The pain of days past and the uneasiness of what's in store for the future, but the warmth of personal experience and shared memories with the people you love. That's the feeling this song evokes, at least to me.

  • Sorry to hear that.. This ws my wedding song.

    Seems more appropriate

  • Thanks, Empire Records... :B

Seriously, what a dumb movie... it had some great tunes in it though! Introduced me to a lot of good stuff when I was still very young at the time.

  • I hate that music never comes on the radios anymore... at least we have this song to remind us that long ago... there was actually some made at one time.

  • @Onlinepoetrycafe heard this song on the radio today!!! loved it!!!

  • Best accordion solos ever.

this is the greatest thing I've ever accomplished.

  • @Cyt37 I think half of those views are mine.

  • i defy you not to dance

  • i found this song last night via the movie "statis" (1985)

  • Shit, I don't know how someone can hate this song, I just discovered it and it put me into a good mood.

  • For 56 people, this just isn't their day.. or that they just don't wish to make it their day... even though they 'coulda done anything they wanted' ... Or maybe they reeeally hate M&M's ? Be yourself, cuz this is the day your life will surely change! : D!

  • This is the day Nick Diaz liked this video :)

  • i remember this from Weekends, ATl....DJ Bobby Bridges...

  • Remember I was here.Thai 11:49PM 8/5/2011

  • Mah Jam. I'm Jammin. Me Jam

  • had good sex on this song in 84, the year I wedded my first wife

  • i agree, for every shite band in the 80's there was 3 good ones,i'll put me neck on the line and say this really was the best period for music.

  • At 3:20, Matt's brother, Andy Dog Johnson, responsable for all artwork on The The's LP's & 7''- 12"'s sleeves (also artwork in some videos from Infected)...'till Mind Bomb.

  • Immortal.

  • Some tunes are just atemporal. ;-)

  • Arhhhhh, the good times i have had to this tune all those years ago.............

  • This song was featured in a Gap commercial a few years ago.

  • I think the song is mocking the listener.

Think about it, the main character in the song is staring at a window the whole time. This is supposed to be you.

  • Great band can't do no wrong its about time we had something new .

  • KIM BASINGER

    DULUX DAILY STAR COURT 60157016

    DERREN BROWN

  • Excellent music by an excellent band! This is just why the 80's sound will endure hundreds of years after we're dead, & gone. Provided of course Humanity's still around...

  • Of coarse!!!!! THE THE still one of kind Band.... I remember those days when we are attending a parties at 80's era!!!! huh!

  • Now Accepting Donations to Build a Time Machine back to the 80's.

  • This was on a M&M commercial

  • i didn't go to bed...

    or, else, awake;

  • Hey prenticegreek, it was played at my young sister's funeral too. Know where you're coming from my friend. That was the day our lives did surely change.
