Hmm. 'radioshrink' is an angry chap. To quote your favourite toff, "Calm down, dear". I was not on the marches - I was looking for a job. Norman Tebbit would not let me borrow his Dad's bike. Let's just agree to watch the unemployment figures climb above three million, and wait for someone to say "unemployment is a price worth paying".May I suggest that you form your opinions from more than just The Daily Mail? They just tell Taxi drivers what stupidity to regurgitate. Your new tag: "toryboy"?
Sad to say, but i got here via the Manics version. Which is, in itself an excellent cover but the original is always better somehow. I work in a student union and put this on jukebox and have now heard it since about ten times. Good taste travels through time and brain boxes
Manics could never write like Matt Johnson. I was a fan of this song when it was released and when i heard this sone re-released it made me feel sick. People should just rely on their own skills and stop stealing others.
@mirrorimagesolutions wah wah - who cares, i bet Matt ohnson doesn't give a shit, so why should you? on his behalf' if you don't like it, don't listen or buy it, then you don't support it, by mentioning it, people are curious. Don't listen to the other one. People have been stealing lyrics and music from the beginning of time - you won't change that.
Dod hearing another version really make you feel sick? wtf are you a student? Probably. ah shame. So delicate -life goes on regardless - yawn.
@mirrorimagesolutions I know what you mean, but I'm pretty sure MJ would take this version as generous 'nod' from a bunch of thinking guys with humanity at the front of their minds. I too was a fan of The The, oh, you know when (!), but the backdrop then was Thatcher's 'Lost Generation', a government obsessed by the UK economy and it's 'wealth generators' and uncaring to it's newest would be members. Familiar?
@gmikehome Jesus, grow up and get a life...you're no longer a student, defined by how many marches you go on. Margaret Thatcher was a phenomenon. First woman PM, oh, and for the Consevatives...in the 70's!!!! NOT the Labour party (I'm sure that stat really irks!) She dragged Labour-wrecked Britain out of the doldrums and ready to face the 21st Century head on . There is a reason she was the first person in Downing St.after Blair and Brown became PM - A modern legend. FACTS.
who carfes who was best, you're like a bunch of kids. the song rocks, The The did it first, and it was ace, The Manics and anyone following was FOLLOWING. nuff said xx quit arguing, and be grown up ffs. it's music, not fucking rocket science, if you like it you do, if you like another version, then you like another version. grow up. FFS,,, why argue about thos when there are HUGE things going on in the world.??????????????
You know what, BE QUIET about the Manics. This is The The's not Manics. You were here to listen to THE THE'S version, if you were for Manics, leave this better version nd watch that bad cover. Lets settle it there.
Stop flaming the manics guys, you and I are here to listen to The The's version, not their version. +Really though, the Manics' version is in a completely different style so apart from the lyrics and chords, there's not much to compare. To each their own. :)
This is a beautiful song. It sounds like a potentially mainstream song, but I am thankful it isn't. I feel so restless yet at peace when I listen to this, very strange. It feels so melancholy yet upbeat. I guess the song just makes me thankful for the special people in my life. Hell, there I go ramblin' again.
great lyrics, it only reached something like 85 in the charts, but is a great song, hopefully with the manics doing a copy more people will see the original.
I heard a remix of this this morning and its KERRAP! this orig is far better. should have released this again!! To cap it all off the album has dissapeared from my Itunes!
It's not just Matt's vocal's.., and song writing that make this song...It is also strongly associated with the instrumentation....( cannot be changed ).........
You simply cannot " dress up " a classic eighties tune using " rock style instruments" and vocals from a rock style band such as " the manics"...,
even with the best of intentions.....( I guess Matt would approve though.......)
MSP covered this because it's a nostalgic sort of song that fits in well with the theme of their latest release which is looking back upon all of their singles. I thought their cover was great.
The synth bass is what made this song what it is, in my opinion. A slightly thicker patch is also heard on their song "The Giant." If anyone knows what synths were used on This is the Day or The Giant, I'd love to know.
I fucking love this song, and when I saw the Manics were doing it I thought they would fuck it up.......... and they did. They managed to suck the colour from a beautiful song.
I'm a big fan of the old Manics stuff but everything they have done in the last 15 years has been dull and sterile, not least their version of this song. Journal for plague lovers was good though.
Gosh shut up by about the Manics We all ready know they are crappy now listen to The The, the classic band that MADE this song. K? Listen to a classic song and a great band.
The Manics' version of this song is awful - And I love 'em. They sing all the MONEY in the world couldn't bring back the days... the original line is 'BUY' back the days.. which is a better play on words. This original is a pure classic, actually the album is 1983. The The were ace - the version by MSP is frankly crap.
Mining finished up in Wales a long time ago...then along come the Manic's searching for 'soul' ...'and squeezed all the juice out until it ran dry'. My 'uncertain smile' is a most definate frown. Why, with such obvious talent cover an already 'perfect' song and become just another symptom of the morale decay thats gnawing at the heart of the music industry..?
@sullysportsrfc Well done, you're an idiot. And don't come back at me with anything that resembles a retort because I'm a Manics fan, but they have done nothing of any worth for 15 years apart from Journal for Plague Lovers, and they had to resurrect Richey to inject life back into their insipid music. Insipid music for their insipid mainstream fans. It's a shame because they were so fucking good it hurt. Alas after 1996 they lost it.
@manicbabyshambles123 well done, you managed to make a you tube account all by yourself because clearly you are disabled. The Manic have done some absolute shite over the last 15 years such as the whole lifeblood and know your enemy albums..but to say they lost it after 1996 is pathetic, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours was a great album which i believe won best album at the brits....idiot
@sullysportsrfc Yeah brilliant, you equate winning a Brit award with being good, and you call me disabled? And you congratulate me for creating a Youtube account on this basis, laughable. It's like being teased by a weeping widow.
Stick to your facile music, like the Manics' last album and we'll all be happy. Their last attempt at 'mass communication' was a putrid exercise in how to make music for middle aged men.
@manicbabyshambles123 Is your entire purpose in this video to slag off the MSP? What's the point? In fact you should contemplate greater existencial questions about your life and your purpose: is it really just to piss people off on the internet?
@cis4aber Lol your hypocrisy is highly amusing. all your arguments are consequently rubbished because of this quote "Is your entire purpose in this video to slag off the MSP? What's the point? In fact you should contemplate greater existencial questions about your life and your purpose: is it really just to piss people off on the internet?"
now fuck off and find something better to do than being an opinion nazi
@sullysportsrfc (2) It's apparent that they think by stripping away the compelling nature of the lyrics and music, it will appeal to a large scale audience, which it hasn't, it just seems to have attracted this strange subsection of bland balding men, and if you don't believe me, walk by a queue outside one of their gigs, you can see the shades of grey emanating from them.
@sullysportsrfc (3) If the Manics want respect and to sell records to an audience which aren't just boring fickle fairweather fans then they should work hard as artists and not release half baked, over produced versions of classic songs, it's just laziness. No wonder most of the old guard have abandoned them, they're an embarrassment, I cringe watching them on TV now.
@manicbabyshambles123 manics have been together for about 25 years now so it is likely that many of their fans are going to be middle aged men, i mean, there middle aged themselves, as much as i hate it with music but you have to move with the times...an album like genneration terrorists wouldnt work today, its the harsh truth im afraid.
@nolovelost92 A bit ungrateful, the guy uploaded it didn't he? Trolling around here with your Joy Division name and year of birth. I think you should say sorry in someway.
when my baby nephew died aged eight months I was 18 and never even been to a funeral let alone seen a dead baby, This song is the reason I am still here. Playing it over and over meant I grieved and eventually healed. I dont care what the manics did, this is the version for me.
Empire Records! Mmmm Liv Tyler!! I Saw this film when I was about 17, loved the film and this song in particular, found out what the track was called and went straight to Our Price and bought Soul Mining. I still listen to it now and I'm 31. BRILLIANT
this song is/was perfect. i was graduating hs when it came out. somehow it described the feeling i had at that time. it was uncanny. the the was one of the best...
@manicbabyshambles123 (ignoring your negativity) yes that would be nice if someone wanted to but i said that because old people love to say how young people have lost hope in real music....and this is my comment so i type whatever the hell i please :)
@frauleinschwein Yes but the the's version is a bit weak and the singer has a old and croaky voice. The manics one has a nice smooth voice and is more catchy. I normaly prefer orginals but not in this case.
This is such a bittersweet-sounding song. The pain of days past and the uneasiness of what's in store for the future, but the warmth of personal experience and shared memories with the people you love. That's the feeling this song evokes, at least to me.
I hate that music never comes on the radios anymore... at least we have this song to remind us that long ago... there was actually some made at one time.
For 56 people, this just isn't their day.. or that they just don't wish to make it their day... even though they 'coulda done anything they wanted' ... Or maybe they reeeally hate M&M's ? Be yourself, cuz this is the day your life will surely change! : D!
At 3:20, Matt's brother, Andy Dog Johnson, responsable for all artwork on The The's LP's & 7''- 12"'s sleeves (also artwork in some videos from Infected)...'till Mind Bomb.
Excellent music by an excellent band! This is just why the 80's sound will endure hundreds of years after we're dead, & gone. Provided of course Humanity's still around...
Hey prenticegreek, it was played at my young sister's funeral too. Know where you're coming from my friend. That was the day our lives did surely change.
Ahh, at last. This video gets what it deserves: over 1 million views. I remember watching this when it was at 700,000 views....

Oh and forgot to add how ridiculous the Manics version sounds!! What a mess!!

Empire Records! Mmmm Liv Tyler!! I Saw this film when I was about 17, loved the film and this song in particular, found out what the track was called and went straight to Our Price and bought Soul Mining. I still listen to it now and I'm 31. BRILLIANT

manicbabyshambles123 3 months ago
@manicbabyshambles123 (ignoring your negativity) yes that would be nice if someone wanted to but i said that because old people love to say how young people have lost hope in real music....and this is my comment so i type whatever the hell i please :)

Seriously, anyone who professes to prefer the Manics version has no right to listen to music.
sfa2 4 months ago
@sfa2 The manics version is better!! The The's Version is too deep and croaky. The manics version has a nice clear voice.

@sfa2 no kidding.. someone saying matt johnson can't sing? wtf?!@? one of the best singers in the history of rock music

The manics version is better

@Golfclub02
I disagree, even though I love the Manics to death. Their version is still interesting though.
frauleinschwein 4 months ago
@frauleinschwein Yes but the the's version is a bit weak and the singer has a old and croaky voice. The manics one has a nice smooth voice and is more catchy. I normaly prefer orginals but not in this case.

This song is that good, Youtube haven't gave me any more Suggestions along the right hand side.

This is such a bittersweet-sounding song. The pain of days past and the uneasiness of what's in store for the future, but the warmth of personal experience and shared memories with the people you love. That's the feeling this song evokes, at least to me.

Sorry to hear that.. This ws my wedding song.
Seems more appropriate

Seriously, what a dumb movie... it had some great tunes in it though! Introduced me to a lot of good stuff when I was still very young at the time.

I think the song is mocking the listener.
Think about it, the main character in the song is staring at a window the whole time. This is supposed to be you.
