ok, I need help. I am new to 420 racing but I have been sailing my whole life. (I have my own wooden optimist that I have been sailing sice I was five) My racing coach refuses to teach me how to sail downwind with the spinnacker up! He hates 420s and only pays attention to the lazer racers... Can anyone give me any tips or instructions on what I should do to get started? Please? I am desperate!!!

get a different coach, or just do it... Plenty of stuff online for flying spinnakers... Halyard to where the red and green tapes come together, sheets go on the other two corners. Figure it out from there, it wont take long if you've ever seen pictures of boats flying spinnakers (or just look at this video...).

@GottaLove80s you should do more training at local clubs, race team, local reggatas , or try sailing the opti in different seasons like fall, winter to get better at stronger winds in different places.

@GottaLove80s if you ever sail by a gennaker(assymatric spinnaker) you would know how to rig the spinnaker but the problem is only on the spinnaker hoist and the spinnaker gybe.

@GottaLove80s sorry im late but: if youre going downwind and doing a reg hoist( mainsail is on port) take the pole clip it to the spin sheets in front of the boat put the pole in the reaching hook and onto the mast hoist and play with it...

you dont have to have legs tougether while trapezing on broad and beam reaching you can easy lose your balance

My coach says Crew on 420 or 470 on beam or board reching should treapeze like a 10 years working whore :D

Yeah well 5years since this video was made and many regattas and boats later i still trap that way, even on 49er's and 29er's. If the water is flat and you have a sense of balance there is no reason to not get your weight as far out as possible.

Yesterday I went to a regetta, and we could fly either spin or no spin. I haven't learned how to do spin yet so we had to work without one. We beat the people with spins =) haha, and overall we came first! It was so much fun. (we had a great chat with the opti sailors XD) Plus It was my first regatta =)

Not really, but it is kinda hard to go anywhere with no wind XD.

We were just lucky we got a good start to all of our races. So in the end, the spins ended out last and the no spins ended out first. So much fun though lol.

I think its a trade off. if you fly spin than you have the potential for more speed but its easy to mess up. not flying spin gives u less speed but you sail better

420 is a good bronze boat but not really a high performance racer.

29er is a little overrated. a great time on the water but not the greatest racing boat out there either. Laser 2 is a wicked boat but it's dead and I can't really think of anything else thats a good double-handed boat, that's popular.
