The noise was from Esau. He just wants them to go to the cave so that they can blow the hatch door, then blow the hatch completely so they can leave the island then come back 3 years later whilst some of them return to 1977 and others to 2007, where Locke dies and Esau takes control of Locke's body in order to use that loophole to kill Jacob.

It's all part of Esau's doing. He wants the events to turn out exactly how he wants them to.

I could be wrong, but don't think Jack ever actually called out when he chased "Ghost" Christian through the jungle and didn't Jack find the caves the same day he started running through the jungle after his dead father?

yes he found the caves the same day but as jack always did he found it first then went back to let the rest of the survivors know about the caves and that anybody who wished to come with him to the caves could do so. if not they could stay. it was like his father was leading him to the caves.
