and actually having said what I said about the new epsiodes they aren't that bad, they still continue to be as entertaining as the new Family Guy, yes nothing tops the classics nothing ever does but I wouldn't say they are shit
I think if I had to choose between Family Guy and Simpsons I think I would pick Simpsons everytime, not only because it has been with me since I was a small child and I have grown up with these characters but Simpsons had a lot of heart and tackled some real issues, Family Guy is clever and a lot of the humour is pretty brilliant and despite the declining quality of the new episodes I think Simpsons is the best because of moments like this that get you inside
Homer was goofy but he had a personality, sometimes you could relate to him or some of the stories featured in the show. They used to tackle serious topics in a funny way, sometimes you didn't even notice it right away, but there was always a hidden message in the end. What made it different from all other shows is that it wasn't a how-stupid-you-can-be sitcom just like family guy is.
The reason why older episodes were more emotional is that they had time to actually tell a whole story. But as the years have gone by, commercials have taken up more of the air time,
@simpfan666 There has been some talks down at Fox over the show's possible cancellation. I heard that the cast are refusing to have a pay cut and that could lead to the show being axed for good. The last few seasons have been really crappy. Maybe, if they took a break from the main series, and started making only movies and specials, the simpsons could go back to its greatness.
This is why Simpsons is better then Family guy, you dont see things like this in family guy. Unfortunately you dont see this in the simpsons anymore either :(
This part and with the one when you see why Homer is working.. You know "Do it for her" Never cried like that before... it was so touching and beautiful!!
Seeing Homer watching his mother leave even though they have been together for a short time made me cry. I gotta say this is one of the most saddest yet touching episode in Simpsons history.
This is one of the most beautiful touching episode of The Simpsons. This musical piece is very very nice and a good decision than putting the normal ending with the Simpson's theme!!
@zwut1 homer sees his mother for the first time since he was a child. He thought she died, but she explains that she had to go on the run from the law. They're reunited briefly but she has to leave again, and it ends with them parting and Homer staring at the stars during the credits.
I lost my mother shortly before this episode first aired in 1994 (I was 6). I was a huge fan of The Simpsons, and this episode really meant a lot to me. This ending was and still is extremely special to me. It's rare that a cartoon can move someone so profoundly. Thanks for putting it up.
I think about my girlfriend every night, looking at the sky...I love her too much to let her go..no matter how many times she gets annoyed by me, or she's mad at me.
The music in this is pretty, but I've always thought Lisa's First Word and Maggie Makes Three as being more touching. I dunno, at any rate moments like this is why Family Guy will always just be silly trash compared to the Simpsons.
I remember this tear jerking episode. It caught my whole family by surprise. We never cry during shows or TV but I think we had such an attachment to homer we felt for him. My dad left the room
@IP6000 Especially the episode where Brian thinks his life doesn't mean anything. So Stewie makes the family think Brian is dead to show him how important he is to them.
@bbSouthstreet There's one episode where Brian and stewie get trappped in their bank vault and Stewie finds brian's gun, only to discover that it's brians easiest way out of life.
I have always tried to find this before on the web and voila, it's now on YouTube. Please Fox don't take this down. It's perhaps one of the best scenes, from one of the best episodes, to one of the best shows of all time.
I don't know why anyone would dislike this, but it really says something about the writers of that episode if there are than 21000 views to this video.
I grew up with the Simpsons and hate what its become. No longer light-hearted comedy but political/social agenda slapstick
She wasn't dead at the end of this episode, this is the one where she get's on the bus at the end and says Goodbye to Homer, it's still a very sad scene like, but she isn't dead at the end of this episode.
The best ever ending to a tv episode I have ever seen. Unbelievable and too difficult to describe further. The Simpsons is the best thing that ever happened to tv.
i love this episode, not just the song but the whole show, I almost cried I don't cry very often. It's so emotional they should make more like this, a lot more. Peace to the world and god bless the souls of rebels against everything bad in the world.
I think this is what Family Guy has been trying to do recently by giving us serious storylines with some characters, eg. Brian's bank vault episode and that whole murder special. They're trying to give us a better feeling for their characters, making us empathetic for them.
Problem is, it's been VERY well established that their comedy is nihilistic, so it's pointless to even care for the characters at this late a stage. They started out comedy, and they can't change that now.
@primepm Simpsons are much different. It's always been about the family in general and their triumphs and/or failures in getting by, be it large scale (monorails) or small scale (childhood crushes). They've established characters with their own emotional swings, and so they're allowed to get away with touching episodes like this
Family Guy just can't; it's just too little, FAR too late. As silly as the Simpsons have become today, they'll still top Family Guy in emotional responses like this
I've always found this episode heartbreaking. But even more so, now. I lost my mother to cancer, 14 months ago, and I'm still grieving heavily. Some days worse than others. Sometimes, I sit outside at night, looking up at the moon and stars, thinking of her, hearing this tune in my head.
@babygiraffe123 I lost my mother a few months before this episode aired. This episode basically summed up my grieving process. This scene in particular is extremely powerful to me. It really is an amazing show.
@Radha0713 I think it was composed for the episode, Simpsons have done a number of original music pieces. I wish a longer version of it existed it's very moving.
I always remember this episode, when homer prolongs his stay on the desert highway after his mother departs, and just glares at the stars. A real nostalgic scene!

beautiful and sad..The song and seeing homer there really makes me so sad.The Simpsons was really a great show in its prime.A shame its become a shadow of itself.Homer will always be more likeable then the likes of peter from family guy because he really isnt a bad man at heart,he loves his mother and misses her deeply..Its sweet and emotional. The best simpsons ending ever.
Reminds me a lot of the 4 Futurama episodes that had touching endings.
What makes this extra sad for me is remembering the scene where Homer finds his mother passed away in the armchair after fighting with her. It's hard not to get a bit depressed about how sad that is.
Can I say that Mother Simpson's passed away now, I now look at this scene and think this is what homer does when he thinks of his mother. I also love that even homer, as stupid and obnoxious as he is, has a emotional side.
I love that this episode has two of my absolute all time favorite Simpsons song moments in the span of 3 minutes, and they are two completely different tones.
The first is the fantastic "Waterloo" sequence, which NOBODY has yet uploaded the English version on YouTube(!!!), and of course, this song, which always brings a tear to my eyes.
Not a single show can hold a candle to The Simpsons. None.
I remember being 8 when I first seen this episode. It made me so sad at the time, and it still does. And I love the credits don't fade to black, adding to the poignancy of the episode. It's one of those Simpsons episodes that stands out as one of it's finer dramatic moments.
Theres something that just relaxes me the way homer looks at the stars after saying goodbye to his mom. Hes not with his family hes just under the stars remembering.
This song is so beautiful! :)

Hes not with his family hes just under the stars remembering.

why - o - why didn't you start uploading a minute before that? Thanks anyway, but what transcends this scene is missing :(
