Factors beyond the control of the individual? So someone who rarely eats will get obese. God damn this country is stupid. You've all lined up, been fed what to think, and then regurgitate it even when it flies in the face of common sense.
The poor are the grass? This guy is a lunatic. And an idiot. That's right, Bill Hates is not producing anything or supplying jobs. This guy is ignorant and no one should listen to him. Hunger is not a simple problem to solve. Giving money and food to people does nothing but produce more starving people. This guy is also a liar and is making up his facts!!!!!
I really disagree with "Hungry people ... some of whom become obese."
There are sooooooo many cheap and healthy foods that people could be eating that would save money and their health. If you can afford to be obese, you can afford to be healthy. Dried beans, lentils and rice are all a few cents a serving. A PB&J sandwich is WAY cheaper than anything off the dollar menu. Milk is only a little more expensive than soda and water is free. People who are obese are just making bad choices.
Nice idea but I am afraid we have an inept government that would most likely waste more than cherities. Besides the problem may not be that we need to feed people in a different way, rather abolish the federal reserve and restore constitutional currency, that would stop the constant inflation and prevent these kind of financial crisis.
I wonder how bad hunger will get when we run out of oil. It's going to be a new Dark Ages and it will be a struggle to grow enough food for everyone. The Green Revolution is coming to an end.
@JixYt Wipe out all 1 billion muzzies and take their oil. Problem solved. Fuck Europe, Russia, China, India, and Africa. They can all starve as far as I'm concerned.
Obesity is the result of unhealthy eating (malnourishment), combined with too little physical activity over time. Hunger cannot create obesity.
Most diabetic conditions are not the result of not eating, but a combination of family genetics and a severely unhealthy diet over time. But, having the genetic predisposition for diabetes doesn't necessarily cause a diabetic condition. Hypertensive conditions also usually follow unhealthy dietary patterns.
Berg is making the connection between poverty (the precondition in America for hunger) and cheap calories that promotes obesity. But it's not so black and white. Some obesity may be attributable to factors beyond the control of the individual (heredity, possibly early childhood infection, metabolic syndrome, etc.) that are also part of the overall equation. 1 example new ideas- innovations-report(dot)com/html/reports/studies/childhood_viral_infection_a_obesity_161894(dot)html
@cookingupastory The connection between poverty and consuming cheap calories as a cause for obesity is obvious. My comment stated nothing to the contrary. Of course there are secondary factors that create obesity. But, unrelieved hunger is not one of them. This video is about ending hunger, not heredity as a basis for obesity. Look at starving people. They are underweight, not obese.
I was largely uncritical of his points, mostly responding to CommentatorX, but did not reply directly to it.
Yes, you have spotted the brutal paradox—For the first time in human history, it's not the wealthy who are obese (in large percentage), it's those who live in poverty. A regular diet of fast food, and highly processed foods that are cheaper to buy, and can be addictive to some, are major contributors to the obesity epidemic in America. There are other reasons too. Some who are obese, do watch what they eat. Science does not have all the answers—not yet, anyway.

Otherwise, most of what he said was accurate.
