I have spina bifida, and unfortunately, your son's ability to walk is not in the doctor's hands. However, dont give up hope. I've never been able to move my legs, but I've accomplished quite a lot. I ski, SCUBA dive, play wheelchair basketball, and Im a very high ranking officer in my JROTC unit in high school. just tell your son to work hard, encourage him, give him opportunities, and tell him not to let any thing stop him, and nothing will. I'm serious. let me know if you have any questions.
My name is kara. I was born with spina bifida 20 years back. What a little blessing you have in your life. I would love to chat more and see how he is doing now. kamo9224@gmail.com
My son was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He is 17 months and recently acquired his first wheelchair. When I was pregnant, I was filled with dread he would never walk. I have since learned to embrace all that he has and not dwell on what he doesn't have or might not have. The fact he is alive blessing me each day with his gorgeous smile is more than any mother could ask for.
@TheMrSkaterboy14 - He was born with spina bifida, which is an opening in the spinal column when it doesn't close fully inutero. The nerves are then exposed which can cause damage to the lower limbs, etc.
Congratulations on your baby! Don't worry about what doctors say. It is not in their hands whether your son will walk or not. Have faith, do everything possible to help him lead a normal life and the rest will fall together. I know it is hard and at your stage I didn't know how we were going to make it, but we have and life is great. Your son will amaze you and help you see life from a different perspective. Comment back if you'd like my contact info.
