Each time I've gone to Pharmacy I always ask Pharmacist to write the exp date of the bottle from which the pills came so I'll know what the manufacturers exp date was. Otherwise, typically, the med bottle they give you states "one year" from date of the filling of the Rx. Always store cool, dry, darkness/no light which in turn extends shelf life.
I just got a problem 2months ago, they took out my thyroid after finding cancer. i need to find out shelf life and substitutes. the meds or am I screwed as a preper???
A very interesting video. thank you. I have a question though. Do you have any information on the spread of the expiration dates? English is not my first language, so to clarify, you gave the average time to expiration, but is there any data re if some samples expired two months before the average, or six months before the average?
So I think (and I may be wrong) that if you vacuum seal meds in a per dose basis and keep them in the fridge NOT FREEZER you should get the most life out of your meds.
A lot of the links you listed are no longer available and many of the links from those that are still good have been removed as well. Good info though, thanks.
I have taken beta blockers 3 or 4 yrs past exp date and they were fine & effective....if they look dark or funky dont use....also I have read that anti-biotics are more sensitive...so use more caution there...natural ABx like essential oils...have a long shelf life>> and will work well as a preventative and a cure in many cases...taken internally.....be well & prepared....
I applaud your efforts to bring this information out but I also caution you. Even though I am watching this more than a yr after it's upload date, you are potentially causing big Pharma and the political avenues that profit from it to lose potential profits. Most of those types don't like losing money, real or perceived. It's not uncommon for these types to shut you down permanently through litigation and such. Still, thank you for what you do, you got a new sub today.
i would think most meds can go beyond their experations dates if they are in an controlled enviroment.?The difference one being carried in a backpack or one in a basement/underground enviroment
water purification tablets arent that big of a deal... if you can boil water; then you can make it potable.. also an extra plastic gatorade bottle or something like that in your pack can be cut open and used as a filter with a bandana, sand, and charcoal from your fire to filter then boil.
I was at my docs office several years back and he put me on Inderal
(propranolol hydrochloride) Tablets.uses for these.1They are betablockers.2High Blood Pressure.3Take when having a heart attack.4Palpitations.5Panic Attacks.6Anxiety,plus a lot more.I say this because he gave me a bunch of samples.Got home and was looking at them(about 5 to a pack)Noticed some exp dates were way off, close to 18 months, called him and he said they were ok.So I pass that on but still use at own risk, look them up.
thanks Patriot nurse! My Dr. lets us get prescripts for a full year and we vacuum seal them into canning jars and stick into the basement fridge. Never has a problem. We live 100 miles of anything and dead of winter can get trapped at home for month's on end. So every summer we go and get restocked. Now we know what we don't use can be kept longer!
Should mention for long term storage, the military tests drugs from refrigerated storage in the original containers containing desiccant packages. If an individual is going to store tablet drugs for long term they should.
1. Refrigerate the drugs
2. Store in an airtight container. You can leave the drugs in a prescription container with the label and place several smaller containers in a larger container that is airtight.
as an ex combat medic and having a BS in health education and several certifications in medicine i have found that the expiration dates on drugs are made to say they expire earlier than they do so because ppl who dont check the dates generaly throw out the drugs about 6 months afterwards give or take so ive been told through military schooling. most NSAID's are expired 6-12 months after said expiration dates. you seem to have done some excellent research here...
@patriotnurse where could I buy large ammounts of antibiotics for when shtf???? Please let me know I have a big family and want to be prepared! Thanks
I just stumbled onto your vids today and I think they are great. Fast and easily assimilated info on many things we might not think about and would miss.
I had some sample meds from my doctor one time that I kept for a couple years and when I opened one to see if it was still good it looked the same as when new . They were individually vacuum packed in a heavy foil and I think they would have kept much longer. I am going to test vacuum sealing some vs leaving some in the bottle as a control.
all the research you did... what were the date/years these studies were conducted? is it possible that shelf life from said products in the studies have a shorter life after the "expiration date" due to 'easy to manufacture' processing. Cheaper-to-make products that yield high profit/turn out for companies usual are shittier in quality. Every one trying to make big money, fast usually takes short cuts! =/ thanks
What about when they do not allow any of these drugs to come in? I mean after lockdown? Hmm, what then? I guess the druggies will get desperate. Thanks, PN
@Richardofdanbury I did not. That incident seems to be the backbone of the warning against it. Now I'm not saying that's the only thing conclusively - - I'm just saying in my search I could not find another reference point.
@ThePatriotNurse PN & Richard: I am almost certain tetracycline can become nephrotoxic (kidney damaging) after expiration. Did the official FDA logged incident indicate that? You didn't mention how it "didn't go down well"...I have neither the time nor will to research this further atm but it appears this issue needs this further investigation.
@thepatriotnurse would you say that liquid and gel medications last longer than expiration dates as well? Such as dayquil and advil liquid gels as well as children's liquid medications?
@moonabove89 Probably, but just by virtue of their formulation (liquids are more chemically unstable than solids) they will not last as long as the pill versions...one reason why I do not store very many liquids. You can grind pills up and swirl them in apple juice for kids as a substitute for childrens formularies. Getting the kids to swallow it is another story :-)
@ThePatriotNurse Hey! One more question for ya... Would you say vitamins apply by the same general guidelines or are they no-go after their expo dates? I hope things are looking up for you these days, I really do appreciate your videos and refer to them often =)
After that date and the dose will likely degrade down from the listed dosage (it cannot go up, but it can degrade into toxic daughters). There is always a dose response. The last thing we are going to do is try to add shelf life beyond what is required and potentially opening up a can of worms by doing so. What would be the point? The FDA won’t allow us to list it on the bottle anyhow.
Now, also keep in mind that the shelf life MOST OFTEN signifies the time when the active ingredient will be guaranteed to be within a narrow range of the dose listed on the bottle...

Here's my thought... shelf life probably refers to the life of the product sitting on a shelf, in an uncontrolled environment, like you may find in a pharmacy(minus those needing refrigeration).
Now here's my question... Do you feel keeping antibiotics in the freezer or deep freeze will postpone the expiration date even further?
@ThePatriotNurse See if the army can't do a study on extending their shelf life.
These "medications" may be toxic after they expire, but they're also toxic before they expire. Kevin Trudeau's "Natural Cures" book might interest you.
Thank you for the information. One drug that particularly interests me in terms of longevity are statins. Did you research have any tidbits of information on those?
@NeelCyr: Negative :( There were only about 15 drugs (maybe less, can't totally remember) total that managed to leak out of over 300 that the SLEP tested.
Thanks for getting this out, Its something I have wondered about for years.. I have taken "expired" OTC Stuff, and figured the dates were a bunch of BS, but its nice to hear it from a person who knows what they are talking about when it comes to meds :)
Thank you so much for the information. I've been doing my best to put meds back and now I feel safer and better in doing so. It really hacks me off that we're all taken such advantage of for the sake of the almighty dollar. Keep up the great work and God bless you.
@Hobohube: Basically, If Aspirin smells strongly, overwhelmingly acidic (like vinegar) it's best to pass on it...This little "Litmus Test" for me is difficult, because I have never smelt aspirin in this state. That's kinda why I don't store too much aspirin...it's cheap, but I have never been altogether comfortable with it's toxicity indicators. That being said, it has it's place, especially for cardiac patients.
i do know you can eat Mounds even if its three years outdated . because i have. and when you notice and call the 1800 number on the wrapper they just say that it is perfectly ok to eat but the taste may be altered , thats all. i didnt get sick or die lol.
I also did this same research a few years ago. Most meds (exepting some antibiotics, insulin, etc.) do last many years, although the efficacy will lessen the more time goes on. Thanx for addressing this, PN! It's good for people to know they don't have to throw away expensive pills because the date on the bottle has passed.

Tamperproof, child resistant etc) and it must pass with each combination of those packaging as well. You see how quickly it gets out of hand.
Now, we run these tests in high temp/humidity chambers and then assay the drugs. Once we get the minimum stability required by the FDA - We Stop!
Get approval and get it to market, Period...
Working with the FDA is like working with the IRS, you don’t want any questions about why stability failed three days after its minimum shelf life.
