The powers that be will only ban it from MotoGP competition if it proves to be as fast or faster than the prima donna 4 strokes. They did it with the 2 strokes, when they saddled the 1/2 size 2 strokes with so many disadvantages and it still won, they went ahead and banned the strokers altogether, this way they won't get embarressed by old school strokers. The 4 strokes could be up to 5 cyls and 1000cc, but the 2 strokes could be no bigger than 500cc and only 4 cyl;s.
If a buy one now and shipped it to the Philippines. I can use it on the streets. And I can register it. Its just easy here. Everything is street legal.
@CrimeAvenger2 more like the sound of a high reving NA 13b or 12a... the R-26B sounded totally different - much, MUCH more agressive, higher pitched and with this "crunchy" idle ^^ you just can't compare a 2rotor with a 4rotor IMHO... but then again, they do sound more similar than what's in between; absolutely nothing beats the sound of a 20b ;)
as far as i would guess...the motor matched these modern bikes...but weighed alot less then the MotoGP regulations....Rejected and Denied track access to a racing series event...unless its just a track day...i dunno really
@vitaliyr1 i'd also say that 2-strokes and rotarys rule, but ONLY if they're used for racing - so, like this one :) but on public roads, i never wanna drive anything else than a good old durable, carbed, aircooled 4-stroke with a wide usable rpm-range
@purpleGoAhead I am partially with you on that one. You HAVE to go to 4 stroke motor for city use, way more practical. Doesn't load up when idles, doesn't foul nearly as many spark plugs and less smog. And for me it has to be fuel injected and water cooled with modern technology.
@vastenmielinen It looks like Norton may be entering a MotoGP contender in 2012 after all. Unfortunately it's unlikely to be the NRV700 which is the pumped out version of this bike (yes, it's a Wankel powerplant).
sjeessjees---> Yiir I with you, it was forbidden back in the early 90'es alongside with the mazda's in le mans..... Not because they were "cheat engines" but because the comity was payed to do it.....In my prospective anywaye ;)
now you knwo why they tried to keep this bike out of the mgp. This bike is extreme! 160 bhp is not that big, but it's the weight of the engine and bike!
Damn I watched yhis video like a million times, and every time i want that bike more and more... It's the freaking bike of all times.. I got one of the old aircooled norton rotaryes, it's a blast to drive :DD
is it just me or is that thing really lean? if so that would make since seeing how it backfires so much on decel and the ewxhaust is glowing red. but then again my rx7 makes an assload of heat. xD
that is a silly comment from those inexperienced in rotary engine technology. ceramics and lightweight alloys are the way of the future and can take a fair amount of abuse with minimal wear.
heat is the biggest issue, imagine every RX8 being rebuilt after every drive... norton released a rod rotory machine in the 80 which didnt need maintenence after every ride
i think it has to do with the fact that it is a rotary, exhaust gas temps in rotarys tend to be considerably hotter than most piston engines. it might be on race gas, that could make it hotter as well.
Michael Dunlop is riding one this year at the TT, can`t wait...... and they are going to make 200 road bikes, but they will be very pricey, i suspect.
The lads from Bracebridge street in Birmingham would be well chuffed that the name lives on. Managed correctly they could use the rotary engine to become another Triumph success story.
TT 2009 first - a very tough place to go and race. Go for it lads. Remember Steve Hislop and the rotary in 91.
Either that exhaust is a really thin guage or someone is in need of a dlc coating. It sounds awsome, can't wait to see how it fairs against the competition.
I`ve always wanted a Norton rotary !! Now I REALLY HAVE to have a Norton rotary !! That sound is quite possibly the best engine sound/music ever !! I cant wait to see them in action at NW200,TT and maybe even Moto GP2 !! Awesome ! AND BRITISH !!

2 stroke and rotary rule. Smaller in size, less weight and more power. Four stroke fail. Four stroke sucks major valve.

if thats rotary (is it ?) ,then im sure they will ban it from competing in any MotoGPs.

It would be good to see some of that heat 'recycled' into energy and dumped on the back wheel. What about a steamjacket round the exhausts?

Don't hold your breath for a production model yet. Those things are like F1 cars, need maintenence after every ride.

i think it has to do with the fact that it is a rotary, exhaust gas temps in rotarys tend to be considerably hotter than most piston engines. it might be on race gas, that could make it hotter as well.
