  • It's nice seeing that Yukina could develop a good relationship with her new onee-san. It's sad that the relationship with her own blood onee-san has deteriorated. But what does she expect? She quit college while her younger sister is in Kyoto under vigorous training and all she's doing is buying more mascara. Yukina will become a geisha, an artist. What will she do?

  • why does she have to be on her knees to open and close the door?

  • @true2me713 tradition

  • how come they allways seem to knee to open the door do they do that to enter the house aswell?

  • eyeroll @ them spelling it "saki"

  • When Kikuno gets her hair done. What is that instrument that the hairdresser keeps clamping into her hair? And what is it's purpose?

  • holey shit

    she's 15 and she's so independent

    i'm also 15

and i wouldn't be able to function without my mom dad or brother

  • "I can't loose to her"

A,a statement that goes on in the mind of everyone.Mostly Asian,I hate stereotypes but it's true. We;re constantly trying to top everyone,so we don't have to hear about that someone non-stop.To be honest,I love that it's true, though it can drive you mad. It's better than sitting on your bum and being told university is an option,I was shocked when I heard uni was just a choice. To me,it's a decision, whether I choose to go into that line of work or not.

  • @blingblingshineshine me too! I was quite shocked when I found out in highschool that university was an option.

  • Donald Duck pajamas? How can she expect to become a geisha with DONALD DUCK PAJAMAS? :-D

  • How many dance classes do maiko take a month? Do they go to them everyday?

  • She has a very mature way of thinking for someone so young; she seems to fit in well with the Geisha way of life.

  • I can't really tell but it looks like Kikuno does a pink gradient effect on her forehead, it looks cool

  • Why do they have to kneel before opening and closing the door?

  • @xjetsetxlifex

It's tradition, it's been done like this for centuries.

  • @xjetsetxlifex for respect. Kneeling, bowing, something called kowtowing, all of those things are done because of respect. It shows teh client is far above her, and she's just serving him or her.

  • Yukina's sister seems westernized!

  • Do geisha even get bathroom breaks?

  • @xShadowxPhoenix They can, but the more likely case is that they make sure not to drink, because it's a pain to go to the bathroom when you're wearing the full geisha ensemble.

  • @xShadowxPhoenix

No, when dressed in full attire they drink as little as possible to avoid the whole fact of having to go.

  • @attackofdameepits But they are made to drink on the job, man I couldn't handle that

  • @xShadowxPhoenix

While they do have sips, they also just "wet their lips" / pretend to drink it. Me I can't drink even a sip with the meds I'm on. I feel like I do when I don't take them- ran over by a bus.

  • im wondering how hot exactly are those kimonos?

the poor girl would need the air conditioning on the whole night

  • @yfset8 They are not only very hot at times depending on the weave, but stiff and heavy. A Maiko kimono with proper obi layers weighs about 8kg and some formal kimono as much as 15kg.

  • Donald duck on her pyjamas. Touching that she works so hard and is forced to grow up quickly but she is still a little girl inside.

  • this culture is crazy beautiful <3

  • heck taking my heels off after a night out is hard enough can't imagine dealing with a whole kimono. Personally I lack the patience to do what these girls do. It seems like really hard work and requires a lot of dedication. Kudos to them!

  • Misato does seem like a lazy ditz

  • " I don't want to lose against Yukina." Nothing like the good ol' sibling rivalry.

  • So do most maiko/geiko not get married in the long run? Or do they only have relationships on the side? Sorry if this sounds rude or ignorant but I just thought of this after watching this section over again... If anyone knows please let me know.

  • @greeneyedmonster6 It's a mix. Those that retire from active Geisha work sometimes teach and others start a family. There is a higher percentage that don't ever get married than in the non-Geisha public.

Decades ago that single for life with or without sponsor percentage was higher than modern times.

  • Does anyone know the name or how to do Yukina's hairstyle in 1:18?

  • Comment removed

  • @Ascended27 its called the split-peach hairstyle. traditional maiko hairstyle is like that because they want too look young and innocent. geisha, on the other hand, have this provocative hairstyle which is bunched up in the back like the lips of..you know.. and they tie the hair with a red swath of silk so that the inside really does look like ladyparts. im not kidding.

  • Lol, random skull on desk.

  • Kikuyu is Geiko of the Miyagawa-cho along the east side of the river.

To see the Gion district one must travel some blocks further east near the temple clusters to Gion corner.

  • Comment removed

  • Ment misedashi* ;)

  • asian people with coloured contacts is the ugliest thing ever.

  • I want to try a kimono !

  • why do they hav to kneel down everytime they open or close those sliding doors? Formality? i don't see any practical reasons, unless it helps them make a habit of doing so when in actual formal circumstances.

  • @kiss9hug They bow and knel down all the time because in Japan its politie, remember that before the western was involved in Japan. The japanese always with few exeptions sat ont he floor while eating etc..

  • Both Yukina and her older sister seem very nice. I hope they both do well in their careers.

  • @Kathilisi

Kikuyu (Yukina) Has had her Erikae (Turning of the collar, maiko to geiko) recently and is doing very well. =)

  • @attackofdameepits Not exacly recently! Kiuyus erikae was held on December 22 2009. many more maikos and geikos had theyre msiedashia nd erikae this year 2011 :)

  • @SauryGirl1

You are right. See what happens when I don't get enough sleep? xD

  • @attackofdameepits lol yeh :)

haha Kikuyu is one off my nr 1 fav geiko :)

  • @SauryGirl1

    Mine too!

  • @attackofdameepits Lol nice :)

Iff I ever go too Gion I wanna meet here :)

  • @SauryGirl1

She is not in Gion Kobu or Gion Higashi. She is in Miyagawa-Cho

  • @attackofdameepits Yes I know I ment Kyoto, Im always a bit troubling when it comes to wether Gion is in Kyoto or Kyoto is in Gion lol...

    I know her hanamachi

  • Questioned..(Raises hand) what is the hair peice that maikos wear with the dangley metal bits?

  • @eburel506

It is A Bira Bira Kanzashi (Japanese hair ornament). They wear 2 on their mishidashi or debut and one afterwords. They are for sale on rakiten and sometimes on eBay, you could also try Yahoo Japan Auctions and bid using Jauce.com

  • @eburel506

    *Rakuten I mean =)

  • @attackofdameepits thanks so much i found some on ebay but I dont think they are that authentic. so thanks a bunch.

  • @eburel506

Your welcome! Your best bet is to go onto flickr and look at pictures and then go on an internet hunt.

  • Am I the only one that can relate to Misato? Or do others feel a bit like her too? You see in 'Dawn Porters Geisha girl' that Yukina really has adapted well as a Maiko, you only see a quick glimpse of her, but she looks like she's doing well ^^

  • The contrast between the garish, Walmart culture of her elder sister and Yukina's profoundly elegant way of life is jarring. Yukina is preserving the flower of Japanese culture and its art forms while the sister is rummaging through the cosmetics counter at the mall.

  • How can she bare bowing down to open the sliding door every-time she goes through? I would be like, screw this I'm just walking through.

  • @MalonEisaiMalakas what would annoy me the most is those pillows they have to sleep on would really hurt my neck. (I can barely stand the sink when I get my hair done). and I am not sure I could rember all the dance moves (I can be very forgetful.

  • @MalonEisaiMalakas Japanese bow quite a lot, so I think they're pretty used to it. XD

  • Yukina is such a mature and helpful girl! She sounds very courageous as well, since I wouldn't be able to stay away from my parents for that length of time - and to deal with the loneliness takes a lot. I really do admire her :)

  • That's so sad! I hope Yukina and Misato are okay now. And that they are both happy.

  • I thought that your older sister had to be a geisha not a maiko

  • @katastrofa630

As long as they have one days seniority they can be either. :-)

  • I really admire Yukina's inner strength and courage! Not being able to contact home for that long must have been so tough, especially at 15! Working hard all of the time while also being very lonely a lot. I really look up to her! :)

  • this is the cutest geisha documentary ive ever seen

  • I was doing the math, and Yukina debuted in 2005, she will have her Eri-kae somtime this year in 2010! Congrats Yukina!

  • it looks more like fun and not work. wish l could get paid to dance and sing!

  • To Close/Open the Door they to kneel then again kneel to Open/Close the door.

    Interesting!

  • I'd LOVE to leave for Japan and become a maiko (later geiko), and I'd left for Japan right NOW, If it wasn't for the fact that I'm a blonde, short haired, norvegian girl, though I have rather asian looking eyes... At least compared to other norvegians...

  • I'd hate to open doors like that..

  • geisha are way better than runway models.... such beauty worth the money too!

  • OMG Misato And I Have The Same CD~!

  • Amazing

  • wow, she is only a couple years older than me. i've always wanted to do this but now...i dont know....

  • I rather envy Yukina as well. My dream would be to have been born in Kyoto and to become Geisha. She's so lucky to have that opportunity.

  • Donald duck Pj's? this girl is too awsome lol<3

  • Her "older sister" is really pretty!Hmmm...I wonder if the girl is actually looking forward to getting her giesha medal!Who wants to have a bald spot!?

  • wow a kimono is $7,256 in the US wtf ...times 40 !!! omg

  • @rokpain, they are no different then doctors or lawyers in that sense. They work, study hard to be what they want to be. Also, geisha do not have sex. It is unusual to find a non-virgin geisha. They are not even allowed to kiss when they go out to tea houses. So I don't get your point really...everyone has to go through training to become what they want to be, so does that make everyone a prostitute? Even if they are virgins. Um yea...you make no sense.

  • @WillyyyV My impression was that technically, while the geisha do live in the geisha house, they do eventually earn a portion of their own income and they are allowed to date (and in extension, have sex, as a personal matter-not as part of their work). The issue of dating seems to revolve around lack of time, as they are always training and working.

  • Just watching them have to sit seiza every time they open or close a door makes me crazy! I can't imagine actually having to do it. D:

  • the parties and environment change dramtically for a geisha house .. dont you think ?

  • wow. beautiful landscape @ 9:10

  • geisha are really strong and independent women! I admire them

  • what a strict and rigorous trade. yukina is very strong! i would have cracked due to the stress

  • msprittstick how do you know she dosen't have alot of the same shirt???don't judge

  • misato (kukino's sis) is SO much more beautiful, and her eyes are blue, which adds to that, because its uncommon for blue eyes in japan. she would be a good geisha maybe....

  • @LOGOMag That could also be contact lens ...

  • @LOGOMag lol are you stupid, it's called contact lenses. they might even be circle lenses, which are supposed to make your eyes appear larger. they are usually coloured and very popular in east asian countries.

  • @LOGOMag

Actually blue eyes are common for native japanese (Ainu). they are the first people of JAPAN. look it up. (Ainu)

  • i'm curious to know: how do they remove their makeup?

  • does yukina only own one top or something?

  • @MsPrittstick No, she wasn't aloud to bring anything in the process of becoming a Geisha. Not even her phone or stuff she just comes and then she starts wearing the Kimono which is first worn when she is done training.

  • Kikuno is sooooooooooooo beautiful!

  • why did she have to sit down to close the door ?

i realy like how japanese are so well behaved and are very polite

at least thats what they seem like in movies and documentaries

  • i reckon her sister should be a make up artist

she seems to really like it hahaha

at least thats what they made it out to look like

  • 甲部?先斗町?

  • I can't believe they spelled it "saki" instead of "sake"!!! It's sah-keh, not sah-kee! Oh well. It's nice to watch the geiko Kikuyu-san's transformation! Kikutsuru is the geiko I know best from the Hanafusa Okiya.

  • I wish I was a Japanese girl ^_^ *day dreams*

I find their way of living so beautiful.

    I agree with Literaturechick12. It's a shame we don't have a um..."culture", I guess you can call it :(

I mean, we do....I just wish it were more like the culture of Japan ^_^

    Pengu

  • haha i love japanese culture too! ^_^

  • Sweet! ^_^

Happy to hear other people like it too lol.

Not a lot of people do near me :(

  • really? how could they not like it XD but im in the same boat. not alot of black people seem to share the enthusiasm i have for everything japanese lol but yes u are not alone!

  • I love how she kneels to close the door, then stands again. I've tried kneeling and standing the way she does, but it's way harder than it looks! Then again, I'm not as thin as her, so I've got a lot of person to move! XD

  • Some geisha look like children when they wear their makeup, but some of these girls end up looking like adults.

  • Gah this is so beautiful! I wish Western culture had something where girls could dress in traditional gowns. The loss of culture is devastating, especially when foreign cultures try to adapt to Western culture. I like the differences in culture!

  • @literaturechick12 Hey you can still see alot of culture in the west! Look at all the beautiful artists, fashion, buildings, music (i don't mean most music today lol) I am from britain and i'm so proud of europe, Italy, france, all amazing places with so much history. It's sad that most people don't take interest in their own culture though, in japan people are obsessed with europe and america hopefully their traditions wont die out. People often just love the opposite that's the problem :))

  • @literaturechick12 I agree its sad the lose culture sometimes. (however there are some things I am glad that are gone like the mituzuage).

  • @literaturechick12 i think we do....it's called the Amish lolz....but i know what you mean...i wish it was a normal sight in the US to see women dressed in traditional victorian gowns and men with top hats and ruffled shirts xD

  • @literaturechick12 It is possible for western young people to take training in the Koryu that helps develop Echiketto and Iki, but few are willing to accept the serious commitment and long-term required to excel.

I am approached at times by some willing to learn for short periods usually 5 years or less.

  • @thesecretpathoflife where do i go to learn koryu?

  • @saphiredewdrop True koryu arts are not westernized and one must travel to the source of training in Japan for most Koryu. The decision is not the students.

The student must be accepted by the sensei or house mother depending on the koryu structure.

  • @thesecretpathoflife so how will the sensei find me unless i go to them first? i want to try it.

  • Why do Asian girls dye their hair? It is sleeky and shiney black in a way none of us in the Western World could ever have....I think it takes away from their beauty when they dye it.

  • Comment removed

  • @no1zgrl4eva -lol..do u have something against asian girls? u keep posting the same question "why do asian girls dye their hair? everytime. weird..i wonder why.

  • Oh no, the opposite, I think Asian women have absolutely stunning shiney black hair and it is a shame to dye it. Re read my comments before you accuse me of racism, I am COMPLIMENTING them.

  • i didn't accuse you of racism..i ASKED you if u had anything...ASK not ACCUSED> there's a difference. .i understand that u're asking a question but seriously this isn't the first time...in the video before, you asked the same question and a handful of people commented back but still you keep asking the exact same question..that just seemed weird. that's all.

  • @no1zgrl4eva as they say, "the grass is always greener on the other side". Some Americas envy Japanese hair, so why is it hard to imagine that Japanese want hair different from everyone else in their country? People always want what they don't have. If you're light skinned- you tan. If you have wavy hair, you straighten it- etc.

  • the phone at 6:00 is cool!

  • Does anyone know what that little metal tool was that they used on her hair? I know that i sound dumb, but I'm not sure what it is. thanks...

  • looked like a hair straightener to me, but i can't really be sure.

  • @starsonmywindow it's a type of hair crimper to add volume to the hair.

  • They don't get to eat, or drink and have no time for dating on top of everything else? Who would torture themselves like this?

  • $10 000 for a single kimono, and a Maiko needs 40 in her wardrobe. That's..I can't even process that amount of money. Surely the cloth and labour that goes into them doesn't amount to $10 000.

  • The fabric, the craftsmanship, the design, if its made by hand or original, then the labor... yes, a kimono can top a high price.

Many Hollywood movie stars have clothing not nearly as complicated for five times that amount, but do you blink? Jennifer Aniston has spent that much on a haircut.

Don't knock the profession and tradition just because you don't get why they do it.

  • To get good extensions and/or weave for my hair can go upwards to 5k....yeah it is possible.

  • Well, $10,000 is the cost of super formal hikizuri, like for misedashi. The average hikizuri is more like $5,000, and the obi are about $5,000 each too. Everything is hand painted, it's literally a couture garment, very special and one-of-a-kind.

The obi SHOULD cost more since they are individually woven like tapestries, but designs are often used over and over, so they aren't as unique.

  • @ewoodham

I think they may even be a little more expensive than that these days! I have a furisode magazine from when I was in Japan and the most expensive one it is was $13,000! I would think a maiko hikizuri would be even more than that, and just on average! But maybe not. And yeah, obi have so many special threads they are ridiculous in pricing almost!

  • @ericamt 40,000

  • What video is this? Does anyone know where I may purchase a DVD copy of it?

  • I couldn't do that

  • OMG I wanna become a geisha!!! to bad I'm totally incapable of walking let alone walking in THOSE shoes. besides i'm not japanese either...;"((

  • Incredible story. I cannot imagine such a self-sacrificing and demanding way of life.

  • ....if i were japanese..and lived in japan and not 18, 15, instead, and had long hair.....i would definately do this...ever since i was twelve i saw my first geiko at 12 . i wanted to do this... i think i was born into the wrong body...lol or im just a loser

  • Yeah, I couldn't handle the whole "bald spot" thing. Yukina seems like she really wants this and she's driven.

  • Geisha can have cell phones???

  • Why couldn't they?

  • i thought that they werent allowed

  • Oh, I see what you mean.

But it's mostly shikomi that are (sometimes, probably depending on the okiya) forbidden to use cellphones, not maiko I think, and certainly not geiko.

A cellphone would be handy to communicate with the okiya or ochaya in case of changes or trouble, and in any case I remember seeing other pictures of geiko and maiko using cellphones (and a documentary where a shikomi said she wasn't allowed to).

  • why do they always kneel when opening and closing doors? its really intriguing me!!!!

  • They do everything with care and precision, everything is ritual so that would extend to opening and closing doors too. I'm not sure if I'm right.

  • That's good manners in Japan. Especially as a maiko in training, she would be scolded if she didn't.

From a practical point of view, the door is less likely to slide off this way, as the direction of the force you apply to it doesn't tend to lift it off.

  • That kimono is breath-taking...

  • £5,000 for a genuine kimono that's about almost $10,000 i think LOL

  • Yeah, it's around there... that's incredibly expensive

  • I know this is an old post but as of today it's

7,956.75, but then again this documentary is 4 years old so they probably cost even more by now!

  • Be nice to have Becoming a Geisha (2005) as a Paylist on your channe;homepage

  • Yukina's sister should become make up artist

  • Exactly what I was thinking! She seems to love the stuff from that short clip we saw of her.

  • she should do my makeup!

  • I'm stunned at Yukina's level of maturity. For a fifteen year old, she is showing remarkable determination and wisdom.

  • @mistressnat zomg thats what I was thinking @_@ I know 20 year olds who are immature and always complain about what they dont have in life... But Yukina's really mature for her age and knows that she has to be strong to achieve her dream :)

  • the money figure is the new way to acknowledge the true value of a material. Why not about the process of labour to make it?

  • you wish geisha could dance?? do you know anything about geisha?! Nowadays I think most of them like it very much

  • that girl is such a nice big sister, not like Hatsumomo haha

  • @QueenOfHeartsx LOl YEAH I know! AQ much better big sister X)

  • @QueenOfHeartsx hahaha..damn right..

  • @QueenOfHeartsx haha...love that movie, Hatsumomo was beautiful though even if she was a bitch

  • @QueenOfHeartsx

This is how a Maiko or Geiko Onee-san should act.

  • @QueenOfHeartsx HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • I wonder if they have terrible knees when they get older. They kneel all the time- even just to open and shut doors.

  • Mostly you break by body by -not- using it. You could as well ask whether all western people lose their hips for all that chair usage.

  • I WANT TO GO TO JAPAN! ^^

  • reply soooooooooon:

how much is 5,000 pounds in american money?

  • Err.. $10,000? about.

  • OMG!
