I have been following Frederick & The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra for about the whole time they have been around - 25 plus years, Maybe? He is just an amazingly talented entertainer who brings such joy to his listeners time and again.
His lyrical, precise, melodic interpretations of rags and songs from the twenties and thirties just amaze and delight me. Ten plus stars for Frederick....Decomoderne
I had the pleasure of hearing Frederick Hodges play a few years ago when he was a guest artist for the Northern Virginia Ragtime Society. He was wonderful then and even better now. What a fabulous swinging sound he gives to this great old tune from the Roaring Twenties. Piano playing doesn't get any better than this!
This is a very full arrangement of My Blue Heaven! I can't help but being amazed at the many novelty breaks, and cadenza-like runs up and down the keys.
Thanks for the video, Ron!
Did you perchance get any of Tom playing any of his compositions?
Yes. Speaking of blue, I got him playing Blue Lampshade, also a pretty good close-up on the hands. And wait 'til you hear how he played Redneck Rag (though of course we all know that was composed by "Brian March", yeah...).
aaaand I have two videos of Tom making stuff up, so that counts! Stay tuned...
Blue Lampshade?!?!? That's awesome.. I cannot wait to see that one.
Keep on the lookout on my channel - I'll be posting one of Tom's more obscure novelties that we heard last year during our talk with Dave Jasen - I'm finished learning it, so now I just need to polish it and find a piano!
By the way - I'm not sure how interested you are in hearing some of my new novelty rags - but I've written two new ones, and I can email them to you if you like!
You are brilliant. A one-man Ampico Roll. I am blown away. I have never heard the likes of you. Bravo.

It has been said that the great pianist, Art Tatum, listened very much to that kind of music as a child. And he tried to play what he had heard.
What he did not knew was that there were 4 hands to play on that electramatic player piano...he did the same with just 2 hands....
The same feeling feeling I get when listening to Frederick Hodges. My great compliment!!

Max Raabe recorded this one, if I'm not mistaken, but I liked your playing also.

Frederick Hodges sure could make some Ampico and Duo-Art rolls for yours truly!

I believe he already has made some Duo-Art rolls on the Upright and Grand label of Eric Bernhoft.
