I am going to see Tommy at the Havelock Jamboree in August. I am hoping to ask him to join the Canadian Country Music Museum, that I am going to establish in the next 2 years. It is a non-profit organization that I hope to set up in Peterborough, Ont.
Got'ta luv the Tommy! He literally landed in my back yard when I was a kid! A helicopter landed the next lot over with him aboard! K.O.C. in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Well, the show went off amazingly well and without a hitch!! My ma-inlaw and I had a most wonderful time and if there was only one request, it would be to see him again!! next april he finishes his farewell tour back east (ottawa or in the maritimes, i can't remember) and on that date he'll be celebrating his 75th birthday!! he's still every bit a showman too!! after he played the fiddle behind his back, he played it under one leg as if he were riding it like a bicycle!! AMAZING SHOW!!
@jeffkahl Actually this was in Aberfoyle... just outside Guelph. This was I think from 2000-2002? I think he was just as new to the neighborhood as we were.
At the end of each show, Tommy Hunter used to sing a wonderful song that filled me with yearning as a kid. All I recall is the line "Wand'rin' ... let me wander..." I have looked all over for it but haven't found it. I'd love to hear it again and I wonder if anyone knows where it might be found?
Bayview Finch sounds like another character that hasn't seen the outside of the city limits signs-- which is probably a good thing for the rest of humanity-- just wish we didn't have to hear or see him-- my apologies to BayviewFinch's townsmen- with attitude like his, I would think one would have few friends!!
tommy is an incredible host and canadian rural music is every bit as valid as what came out of the nashville music machine. use your brains folks , we have a shared history.
I grew up watching this program. It was a VERY important part of my life at home. My Father would sit in his chair and we all would gather around the old floor model tv like ducks. Great memories. thanks Tommy.
I'm not a huge country fan, but I respect it. A hell of a lot more than I respect rap "music". Keep in mind that both country and rock music come from the blues, which was very popular with African Americans during the slavery years. I mean this guy comes in here and says country music does not belong in Canada. That's like saying Soccer does not belong in Canada because it's European.
Truthfully, there is no music genre that is uniquely Canadian, because most of the music genres come from Europe or America. OK, maybe Gordon Lightfoot, Stan Rogers, etc. but those are/were folk singers, which is a music genre older than Jesus Christ
Anyway, Rock is much more a part of our culture. Country music is for Albertans and people from the American Southwest.
Think Neil Young (Godfather of Grunge), Rush (Power Trio), even Leonard Cohen who has inspired many major artists around the world. Then there's Skinny Puppy. Would NIN even exist if there was no Skinny Puppy?
Grow up. Move to Alberta if you want to listen to Country. The land of the uneducated, yet wealthy. You'll like it.
I saw him this week in St. John's. It was a great show. I posted a video. Look for "Tommy Hunter's Last Tour".

I loved this show. TNN was WONDERFUl to watch durin the early days. CMT is just MTV country style, no true country. I miss these days.
CadillacL 3 years ago
Now, CMT is a bit better than MTV (at lteast they actually have music vids and not crappy so called "reality" TV)
