we were there in october for a history trip and we saw this. this was really moving for me because we had found several of my family in and around ypres. Our guide, Raoul (spelling) was fantastic!
Was there this summer and saw the ceremony. Precisely at the end of the silence there was a tremendous flash and a bang which I assumed was a cannon to mark the start of the silence.
It was only when a torrential downpour started that we realised the timing was a complete coincidence, and that it was thunder and not a cannon. Once in a lifetime moment.
Wow at the story behind the menin gates :'( and if you ever go there look for this cool chocolate store it is the finest chocolate in the world and its run by an ice cream company across the road from the shop :)
I went here with school last year, and my great grandad died in this war and i saw his name i was in tears, i had to go to the shop near it to get some tissues because my make up was down my face, i would recomend going though if you get the chance it is really good and it makes you think alot, you will be speechless at the end, it is really quiet there and you can tell everyone there has a lot of respct for the men who fought for our county and i am very proud.
Lieu déjà impressionant mais la cérémonie du "Last Post" est particulièrement émouvante et depuis 1928 (sauf entre 40-45) tous les soirs à 20H00 les pompiers le sonnent et terminent par le "réveil". Nous n'oublions pas!
The local fireman play the last post 7 nights a week i belive, i went there once on rememberance sunday, it was so sad as one of the last servivors stood up and read a verse, thay shalt not grow old as we grow old, we shall remember them, i know i will.
when i was in europe last march, we drove under that very gate, with all the names of the fallen men scribed inside, and at night fall they close the entire street to play the l;ast post
My Great Grandfather's name is there. He won the Military Cross and DSO on the Somme and was later killed at Villers-Bretonneux. He was also an original Gallipoli veteran, however he has no known grave. Although I never knew him, his memory and legacy have been an inspiration throughout my life. Thankyou to the those who keep his memory alive. "LEST WE FORGET"
When you see all those names, all the horrors those men faced.. When you hear the last post, realming through the menin gate.. "My friend, you would not tell with such high zest, to children ardent for some desperate glory, the old lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori" Never is it fitting, to die for one's country. Never will it be. - Wilfred Owen - RIP.
the last post is just breathtaking. it's just very touching. if you think all those names have a face, life, childhood, then you realise the sacrifice.
I went there on a school trip just recently, and the ammount of names on the walls is heartbreaking. So much lost, virtually nothing gained. May everyone who died in The Great War, whether they were part of The Triple Alliance or the Triple Entente remain forever more in peace.
I witnessed this ceremony when I was 14. I'd never thought about war or sacrifice much until then. I don't mind telling you I was shaken and in tears for the next 6 hours.
It blew my mind and rocked me to the core.
Now I carry the memory of their deeds with me always.
They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Wish the piper keep his slurs for concerts not this type of function.
And before anyone questions that, I was regimental Bugler Drum Sgt to the London Irish Rifles and the London Regiments, and have been playing at war memorials like this with the Regiment all over France and Belgium with every tour, including playing at the Cenotaph for the Burma Star and the War Windows the day before Remembrance Day.
we visted the menin gate on out realities of war during basic training, never hav i been so proud standing there wearing the uniform of the british army. 100's of people ever thankful for the lives laid down so they could live without tirrany. so many names of so many dead. seeing this again makes the hair on my neck stand up.
omg i was there three days ago :o it was very moving i went there with school... people were talking and taking photos i felt like taking their cameras and chucking thm on the floor. people wouldnt shut up during the min scilence xx
Thank you so much for the video. I visited the Meningate memorial to find my uncle's name. I found it at about 10ft high which was fortunate. I signed the book of rememberance where I found his name and address. I didn't manage to stay for the last post so your film completed my pilgimage. The whole experience was very moving and I am the only member of his family to find his name ( he had no known grave and was 17 years old)
Was there with a school group from Canada about a week before this video was shot. I don't think it is possible to understand the enormity of this under taking until you have been there yourself. Great video by the way
Look forward to seeing it, again hard to understand the whole concept of Vimy or the Somme or really any battle until you visit the area. I have tried explaining it to no avail. Your video has come in handy!
Following the Menin Gate Memorial opening in 1927, the citizens of Ypres wanted to express their gratitude towards those who had given their lives for Belgium's freedom. As such, every evening at 8.00, buglers from the local fire brigade close the road which passes under the Memorial and play the Last Post.
i was in this ''parade'' im the coloured guy on the left when the 3 guys march to lay the reef at 6:37, there where 86 of us phase 1's from Army Training Regiment Pirbright that night, it was such an amazing atmosphere with so many people there, i was really nervouse. thnx 4 the vid!

It's incredible how many people attend the ceremony, I estimate there was around 400 on this night.
932sqn 4 years ago
I was chatting with dad, and we figured that the 100 phase 1's took up virtually nothing...we reckon more on for 600..
But whatever! There were still a lot of people!
Narky1035 4 years ago
It's hard to estimate but the Phase 1's did only make a small part of the attendance so maybe it was more like 600 people.
