This reminds me of a movie that came out recently called Finding Joe. It is a documentary about Joseph Campbell's model of the Hero's Journey and how it applies to literature, film, and everyday life. bitly .com/syDsZQ
The monomyth was of course reinterpreted by Tolkien - to the Hero (Frodo), it appears that Gandalf sacrifices himself to save the companions. "Technically", Ben doesn't sacrifice himself either, he transcends into a much more powerful form - just like Gandalf metamorphing into Gandalf the White.
Stop looking at the style and look at the substance.
I am a huge fan of mono myth. I have been reading 'A Hero with a Thousand Faces' for years now and find the subject facinating. A good video - thank you.
The Orcs aand Uruk-Hai were not uncapable of independent thought. They had a mind and intelligence just like humans. Their infighting (several examples in the books)proves that they have opinions and can think for themselves. Mindless slaves are not subject to infighting.
Saruman did not die on his war machines. In the books he escaped and took control of the Shire, where he was killed by his servant Wormtongue. This was cut out of the movie.
Lucas really messed up the new star wars, he never answered in a satisfying way why anikin succumbed to the dark force and Luke did not, whats the difference.
his answer was Luke never met his mom that's why he never succumbed to his fears...Lame.
I love modernmyths!. Luke takes on a more typical mentor in yoda though.
Greed is an interesting motive on Anakin, but I would say it was "fear of loss"
After losing his mother, he needed the power to save his wife. The sith provided that. His only mishap/error was being emotionally ensnared with the negative aspect of love (possessive love)...
How is it heroic to go in disguise, but you can add, batman, superman, and all the superheros but still, I wonder why its so heroic, cleverness?

nicely done, though it contains some errors

Because Anikin desired power, Luke did not. Simple.

i once heard from a friend that in the books that take place after episode VI Luke does succumb to the dark side, for a while
IsilionNELE 3 years ago
good comparison. it is more than obvious that some things for star wars came directly from the Lord of The Rings trilogy.
