Guys, watch the movies. They're four movies and they're essentially the entire series scene by scene but with WAAAAY better animation and sound. It's a truly wonderful re-imagining, and they even add new scenes, characters and stuff. The fourth movie is actually supposed to be something COMPLETELY different than what we've seen.

although not understanding what happens at the end is understandable though. =P it's not exactly a dream, it's human instrumentality, a sort of ritual where shinji is the one deciding the fate of humanity through his own mind. The series ends up with shinji accepting humanity, although sorrow is part of it. There's no joy without pain. I guess that's what anno was trying to tell us

@gunnerdelta no..only shinji can use "it", and there's a reason for it..I'm not going to spoil it, however it's not really explained directly, although the answer is in the series, like many other of its plot mysteries =P

and they could have used ayanami, and there's a reason for that as well

@FatherRemmington238 The Angels are not good or evil in Neon Genesis Evangelion. They're working according to their instincts. They aren't "evil", they just have to be stopped. With that said, some of them (Bardiel, Zeruel, Arael and Armisael) do things that could be CONSIDERED evil, and the last three are, without a doubt, intelligent, but they aren't being "evil", as such, they're just acting on survival instincts.

Just what IS an EVA, anyway? I know from having seen the series a long time ago that they are more than your typical giant robot. Heck, Shinji's engulfed him, broke off the mechanical armor, and then ATE the Angel they were fighting once.
