It would have been nice to see them singing this version as it sounds exactly like the version I have on CD., FABULOUS SONG FABULOUS GROUP. Thanks for the posting, AND please if anyone has this live I would love to see it, Gary
Back on 18 March 1982 my wife was giving birth to our daughter at Newport Isle of Wight hospital. Some workers outside had a radio going and this version of the song was played 30 minutes before our daughter was born. It was a very special song, played on a special occaision completely unbeknownst to the workmen Our lovely daughter is 29 tomorrow is getting married this year and gave me a beautiful grandson 18 month ago -how time flies
@petelucas51 Congratulations to you and your daughter, hope you had a great time. A fantastic song for anytime. Time flies! - tell me.When I visited you my daughter was 4 years old and now she is 19!!! Isle of white, I spent a fantastic holiday week there and would've gladly spent much, much more time on that fabulous island. I can remember it so well and they may not like the comparison but the people are very much like the people on Arran. Although it is a compliment.
As a child i loved this song and it is recently i came to realize it was Dusty singing, her voice sounds beautiful, seems effortless. I never grow tired of her voice. Truly a legend with a voice to measure others against. Sad she is no longer with us.
Thanks to Dusty - the supreme individualist, talent, mischief and passion in a matchless mix - and to Tom, who wrote some very, very fine popular songs.
This reminds me of summer 1969 .It played on the radio while i was working outside in the sun,.....I could just picture lying on a beach and drinking Margarita's,..LOL !!
When I was a child of about 6 years old, my aunt gave me her old Dansette record player and a stack of 45s. This was among them. I still have that record. What a treasure!
@laceup1967 I also had a Dansette record player and the very same recording. Spent hours in my bedroom playing my record collection and used a brush as a microphone and pretended to be one of the group. Wonderful carefree days.
Played it incessantly on old dansette in late sixties. I was only 6/7 yrs old. God, I had such great taste even then! A MAGICAL record! (And the b sides not bad either!)
I love the B-side of this songs Johnson Boys "Shame shame on the Johnson Boys" Dusty sounds really good and witty on that song, and it completes a nice single Island of Dreams B/ Johnson Boys get On an island of dreams worth it!!!
Actually, I had only heard this song as recorded by THE SEEKERS. I think that I like this rough, raw version by Dusty Springfield and the Springfields a little better ~
i remember going to see these with my parents when i was ten at an old odeon cinema. they were alright, but i went on to love ROCK ROCK ROCK music. ye-ha
Dusty Springfield never got the acolaides of what a great vocalist she was and this oen song is a testament of her true talents what would lay ahead as a solo artist.
I like this recording, a lot!!! However,I still far prefer the acoustic version up the screen, which is clearly live and was probably from that TV show SHINDIG. Or that similar show; what was it called?? HULLABALOO??? Help me.--andy boehm
Leaving aside Miss Springfield's carpet-licking and her regretable lack of attraction to spotty 14-year-old males, this is really 40 years on, still very, very good.
An unrequited love, of course. I was spotty, skinny and earned about one thousandth of her earnings. Also, unbeknownst to all, she was a carpet-licker.
It is sad isn't it that a few have to get crude and smutty and spoil it for many - I wish that if it was not to their choice they would just refrain from comment.
The quality in her voice is what it is all about and is altready apparent in this recording
You're absolutely right. The weird part of your comment is that it showed up in my inbox -- and yet I can't find a comment of mine. You appear to have replied to ProfessorEdelstein. Odd!
Your dismay is right - and that was the target - not the first time that this has happaned - I have also had some responses that I thought - what the hell are you talking about
for me the musical production here just clashes with the purity of the song - see oldibutgoodi54's live performance version for a comparison. The accompanying photos are an absolute knockout on this vid. Tks 2glenside for posting. So sad Mary/Dusty no longer with us. Wonder what the guys are doing these days. Cheers.

Even if Dusty hadn't been a "carpet-licker", as you so crudely put it, you didn't stand a chance because she wasn't a cradle snatcher.
