I remember watching a soundie machine in a New York soda fountain shop when I was a kid in the 1940s. You put a coin in the slot and it played a black and white film about 5 or 10 minutes long if my memory is correct. I never put any money in it because there were always some teenagers around who did. I had heard about TV and I thought that was what I was watching.
OMG!!! My Grandfather, Carl Hoefle Sr., wrote this song. He and Spike worked together a lot. I have the old 78 but I have never seen the video. What fun... thanks for posting this.
BRILLIANT! Heard my first Spike Jones LP in grade school and still can't get enough! Too bad this caliber of entertainment has long since faded from the landscape... just perfect!
The man singing is Del Porter, a vocalist for the City Slickers for many years. Porter also composed and arranged many of the works they performed.
Soundies were the forerunner of today's music video. The "jukebox" that the uploader speaks about was called a Pan-O-Ram, which essentially played a 16mm film. The Pan-O-Ram was hard hit by WWII, as supplies to manufacture (and repair) them were scarce. They lost their popularity after the war, due to the advent of television.
I have had this clip on 16mm for years but never thought I'd see it on Youtube.. This is absolutely classic Spike Jones. I may have to pull out the projector......
Years ago, watching a NY Mets baseball game, the announcers were talking of "theme" songs teams had and Tim McCarver mentioned that Stan Musial had told him that the theme song of the 1946 St. Louis Cardinals championship team was "Pass The Biscuits Mirandy". How times have changed. Of course in them days the Cardinals were known as a redneck team.
@RRaquello To add further.. The 1942 Cardinals also adopted this song in 1942 when they trailed the Brooklyn Dodgers by 10 1/2 games in mid-August. The Cards went on to erase Brooklyn's lead and won 106 games that year. To put gravy on the biscuits, they then beat the heavily favored Yankees 4 games to 1 in the World Series!
I was always amazed at how Spike looked like a cartoon of himself, must be something to do with those eyebrows! They played some of his old TV shows on Channel Four over here in the UK many years ago now, loved them!

"Soundies?" seems like these were the first Music Videos.
We had this song on a 78 record which broke around 1965 or 1966. I've always longed to hear this again. Thank you so much for this video.
