UPDATE: I asked the girl out regardless and she turned out to be a major whore; we broke up shortly there after. After a month and a half or so, I met another girl who was and still is totally and completely amazing. I didn't use this song as means to ask her out, but I did sing it to her after we started dating. We dated for a short while before she realized she wasn't ready for a relationship. It sucks to listen to this song now. I dedicated this song to the love of my life a long time ago. She ended up leaving me and I tried and tried, but I could never get over her. I took over a year and still nothing, I still felt as sad as I did the day she left me. Luckily she came back, but even now when I listen to this song it brings me back to that hurt. am i the only one that sees this as a bit of a selfish song? it talks about how she works hard and dedicates bits of her own life to make their relationship work, she never asks for anything material. he is out sailing, out chasing his own dreams, while later he says she "fulfills his dreams". but he still says that he'd be sad if she fulfilled someone ELSE's dreams, despite the fact it sounds like he neglects her.

Love is complicated, it is work, a tireless and complex exercise in practice and sacrifice. This song sums it up so wonderfully, we love his music but she loves him for him and he loves her for loving the broken and fragile parts of him that need work.
