hate saying this, but it was almost a little overstrided, if it landed right under his hips it would be 100% flawless. I love this vid though and have started forefoot striking because of this. So thank you for posting this.
@CAWDBOAWD I noticed the slight overstride too. It's not a massive overstride as you'll see if you pause the video right at ground contact, but might be a little of it.
@themattburns Technically anyone running at an efficiently will TOUCH DOWN ahead of the center of mass, but when the foot is bearing all of the weight aka completely flat, the foot is underneith the body. An easy way to see that is by pausing the video when his hips are at their lowest point. The only exception to this would be sprinting, where the forefoot momentarily strikes the ground underneath the body as the hamstrings/glutes pull the lag backward
@adamskyb Check out Terra Plana Vivo Barefoot series. Kinda pricey, but absolutely minimalist. 3mm sole, and a removable insole that isn't any thicker. They aren't waterproof, so "normal basis" means non-rainy days. There are other minimalist shoes out there, but the brown pair I have will pass as normal shoes, even though they are anything but. Vibrams makes Five Fingers shoes, but they are NOT normal-looking, so don't buy a pair and expect to wear them to the office.
Shoes turned us into pussies. I walk barefoot a good deal of the time to build up some callouses. People who say that running on your toes isn't good for you are full of shit. You just need to strengthen the muscles. It's no wonder that we have calves as large as we do. You can't strike solid ground on the heel with bare feet for a long time without cushioning, so I'm pretty sure we evolved to run on our toes...
@hellomate639 because if work reasons i'm unable to go barefoot. However i refuse to wear regular shoes and have to resort to using mbts. A poor alternative but beeter than heel striking!
@hellomate639 running on your toes actually isnt good running form. Its just a waste of energy. let your whole foot come down after the ball of your foot. I tried running on my toes and its horrible
It's not good running form if you're wearing running shoes. But if you have no shoes, running on your toes is the only way to run without damaging your knees.
@themattburns well you're the first one running on toes and probably the last, every toe striker will land the rest of the foot, just like the sublime guy in the video.
Forefoot feels beautiful. Never knew any other way to run anyways. Best running shoes I've ever owned are a pair of water-shoes from CVS that I paid a buck for.
Forefoot, yes. But he is also extending his stride too far forward beyond the center of gravity. For a forefoot runner, this is unusual. I think he's conscously trying to land in front of the camera. Why not try following him in motion?
@mikelogics His foot touches ahead of his body, but his full weight is only put on his leg when he is above his foot. And the example they filmed was probably closer to a sprint, so the foot strike is a little exaggerated.
@mikelogics: He simply takes longer steps. I found myself doing that, resulting in more effortless running. I also see world-class African runners run like that at the Olympics.
I've run for years, and never had even the slightest injury. I grew up in the country, and was an active kid. I rarely wore shoes. When I ran, I ran touching down forefoot first. I didn't think about it; it was just how my brain told my feet to hit. When I first tried running shoes, I hated them. I switched to thin rubber-soled shoes I found at Payless for eight bucks, and still run toe-heel. Evolution knows way more about how to work this stuff than we do.
@systlin not supposed to be running on the toe, more like ball of the foot to heel(which varies on speed the faster your going the closer it should be to the floor, the slower le more distance between heel and floor)
I usually run with shoes but I find it extremely uncomfortable to land on my heels so I land on the forefoot. I noticed my friends all land on their heels and then complain about their legs feeling weird afterwards and one of them always has a pain in her knee in one leg and her ankle in the other.
Could the overstride have happened because he was sprinting?

Obviously the shoe companies won't tell us this, or else they won't make money.

Yes indeed, now just imagine what those small changes can cumulatively add up to over the course of, say, a million years.

Seeing something like this in slow motion is just amazing.. Watching a human run is just as amazing as watching a cheetah run in slow motion.

What shoes can I wear on a normal basis that will also allow me to run this way in them?

Your vids are good! Simple and consistent, and you can actually see the landing.

Look how little impact goes through his knee - just a nice smooth bounce

Forefoot and midfoot are both good foot-landing techniques. However, a heel-strike is when the trouble begins.
