Thank you so much for the heads up about xylitol and the effects on poor pups! I would be heart sick if anything ever happened to my dog, so I will switch from xylitol to the liquid Splenda you prefer.
On interesting thing about saccharine: SweetN'Low contains calcium-saccharine while some of its competitors contain sodium saccharine, which tastes horrible and needlessly adds a little sodium one's diet. So, check whatever brand you are considering; if it's based on calcium-saccharine it should be worth buying.
Hey Ken, Thanks for all the weight loss help. Atkins should take note and subsidize your efforts. Please don't pay attention to the comments by the ass holes, they are the pathetic little people demeaning your work to make themselves feel tall. What do you think about liquid sucralose made without maltadetrin or other carriers?
I actually use liquid sucralose almost exclusively in my cooking with the exception of the few times I need either the bulk of the Splenda (like with peanut butter cookies) or need something like powdered Splenda, which I take the granulated Splenda and grind in my coffee mill. I actually made a video on this topic and the different options recently called "Atkins Diet: Liquid Splenda or Sucralose -- where to get it."
people you need to beware of any diet that promotes the use of artificial sweeteners. actually this alone should tell you alot about the diet and its followers
Any book that recommends unlimited amounts of meat, butter, and eggs, as this one does, in my opinion is dangerous. The author who makes the suggestion is guilty of malpractice, any good diet is one you can stay on for the long term 85% of people last 2 weeks on Atkins, we need to get real.
Your inability to actually understand that which you complain against should be evidence enough that you have no clue what you are talking about. As for long term, is 7 years long enough? Or how about my friends' reports of being on it 10,15, 20 years? The recividism on low carb diet is actually better than other diets, or said differently less people fail on low carb diets long term than other diets studied.
@budsa11 one question budsa have you ever really studied doctor atkins at all or have you simply come to standard conclusions based on what you have been fed about diet and what is healthly for you. Do you understand that the low fat high carb diet when it was first touted as "the" diet for mankind for weight loss and health, was never even studied???? It is simplistic association, eating fat causes fat....nothing could be farther from the truth.
@budsa11 and as far as Meat, butter and eggs are concerned, we never had the issues consuming these things we did before we made wheat corn flour and sugar the dominant nutrients in our diet. If you will notice when we took fat out we became more fat...scientist are trying to figure this one out right now, well Dr. Atkins, the DR's Eades and so on have known that we need fat to survive...in fact this is how we survived as a species. Good natural fats are not the culprit.
..any way i could continue but im think i have made my point ...i would encourage you to read up on low carb science...which its more than just low carb its also fresh un processed foods as a way of eating for life.
@budsa11 WRONG, you don't know what you are talking about. I have lost 70 pounds eating low carb and I have lowered my triglycerides to the point I don't need meds. There are different phases of low carb and you can stay on it for life.
This is NONSENSE! You can still lose massive weight eating rice and using agave or 100% maple syrup as a sweetener. NO CORN SYRUP NO WHEAT!! I follow the blood type diet. You can lose massive weight and still have carbs, just certain ones. I eat white rice and everything, bake cakes with rice flours..still lose weight!
@SodaWaterification What is nonsense? That a different plan worked well for other people that you are unwilling to do? That other people are sensitive to carbs where you are not? That while you are able to have your blood glucose and insulin release go through roller coasters that others may not?
What phase of the diet do you not have carbs? I would suggest you actually understand what the diet is first, and then perhaps you can complain with some legitimacy.
@bowulf Oh I am sensitive to carbs! To the point of heart palpitations and everything. My point is that there are certain carbs restricted in the atkins plan that are neutral to all blood types. I'm not saying atkins doesn't work or can't be good..I just like to get people's attention about the blood type diet because the reason atkins works for so many people is because most people are blood type O and NEED a high protein diet.
@SodaWaterification Yes, but I am blood type AB+, which according to the blood type diet means I do best on pasta-rice diet. THat absolutely was not the right diet for me.
About the use of the word natural. When this word comes along some people might get the impression that they can use a lot more of it. Many poisons are all natural occuring.
I actually use most of the liquid cyclamate/saccharin since it is mostly water and a whole bottle, which I manage to use in 3 months or so, has less carbs than a tea spoon of Granulated Splenda (because of the bulking agent). For use like sugar I use Erythritol since it feels like sugar when chewing it
:( I have been eating about 5 small cups of sugar free jello from Walmart and just noticed these little bad boys have ASPARATIME. Know any Sugar Free Jello I can buy or make that does not?
I think we need to stay away from sweeteners that are not natural. Stevia is the best. Also dates and coconut sugar are great. Coconut sugar is very low glycemic.
@anurre5 I've never tried coconut sugar, so that would be interesting. I wonder what its compositional breakdown is. If it's fructose, I would stay away as that has the same problems as honey or other fructose sweeteners would have.
For the most part, I am of the opinion that all sweeteners should be limited, and each should be guided by their own reactions. For me, Splenda is fine, but fully grant that others may have reactions to it. I have read some ppl reacting to Stevia soda too.
Correction: Agave sweetener is not derived from the same plant that Tequila is. Several different species of agave are allowed for use in the production of mescal, an alcohol similar to, yet quite different than tequila, and these other species of agave are used to make most agave syrups.
@gigimari66 It depends on the type of agave sweetener. Blue agave nectar can be made from the same plants as agave tequilana. Tequila is technically a subset Mezcal, which refers to any agave cactii-derived plant of which there are many species.
Sorry but this is baloney. Dr.Atkins was very knowledgeable about this diet except when it came to artificial sweetners because there wasn't enough scientific research when he wrote the book. It's been proven that even simply touching a sweet flavour to the tip of your tongue can create an insulin response. we all know insulin is the hormone that tells your body to store fat. Sorry but there are no "acceptable artificial sweetners" unless you want to store fat.
correction, for now it can be said xylitol doesn't create an insulin spike in because it is classified as a "sugar alcohol" . These types of sugars are partially absorbed and released into the blood stream... a lot slower than regular sugars. However it seems to give most people bad diarrhea. Now your dealing with dehydration and IBS which is probably worse than an insulin spike unless your a diabetic. I'd stick to real sugar if your really craving it that bad.
@Freedish911 Let's see a blood glucose spike from real sugar, which exacerbates hunger pangs or non-impactful event from erythritol, saccharin, or Splenda, I'll take the latter.
Maybe an insulin spike would be worse from real sugar, I'm not 100% sure, but even if that were true, you still can't deny that artificial sugars do spike your insulin somewhat. (except Xylitol). Now I would also like to see some of these sweeteners raise your insulin enough to kick a person out of ketosis.
@bowulf In either case -- insulin release or not ketosis would still occur as fat would still be the primary source for fuel. The insulin release would however enable the storage of excess fat on the body.
@Freedish911 I think he did pretty extensive research in his own clinics on this topic. Splenda and saccharin in his clinics was shown to be less a factor for this cephalic insulin release than aspartame did. He treated thousands of patients over the 30+ years in his clinics using a variety of sweeteners.
So what new studies have been released since 2003 on artificial sweeteners?
To my horror I've recently realized that decaf coffee has carbs in it... very few...more like a trace... but still... i've going through quite a few cups a day as I love the taste... could that have been the reason why I haven not been losing weight as quickly (i'm still doing Induction - it's been more than 2 weeks now - but haven't seen any great results yet :( ) I've switched to decaf tea now, which seems to have a lot less carbs... is that better?
The real reason is because you're consuming too many calories...not too many carbs. There's nothing wrong with carbs in your decaf. In fact, there's nothing wrong with Carbs. Just eat a balanced diet and reduce calories slightly as your weight drops. Increase daily activity and that will burn additional caloires.Try to get 5 servings of leafy green vegetables and fruits daily. The amount of natural fiber in your diet will reflect how lean you will become. It's a CALORIE issue,.not a CARB issue.
lack of calories don't result in fat loss unless your limiting your calories by limiting carbs also. Limiting calories will tell your body to down regulate your metabolism...Simply put, if you eat less, you have less energy and burn less calories. If you eat a caloric deficit for long enough your metabolism and energy levels will adjust to compensate. By the way fruit also spikes insulin. Insulin is the hormone that directs your body to store calories as fat. Do some research.
I honestly don't have much of a problem with aspartame, but I use it sparingly (mainly just for the occassional drink when a Splenda option is not available). I agree with the low carb candy and mostly about the bars. Too many people use them as a crutch to former bad habits, and real food should be eaten as much as possible.
Thanks for your perspective... The best sweetener is the one that tastes the best to you and doesn't affect your weight. :-)
I actually have BBQ review video. I actually just purchased 3 of the KC Masterpiece ones last week Monday at SuperTarget. Perhaps I should mine for more at area stores. If that disappears, I will probably make my own with Heinz One Carb Ketchup.
The Walden Farms brand option is just not good eats...
Just fruit is the only sweets I eat (in moderation of course). It's better to just kick the low-carb sweeteners, your taste buds will slowly adapt over time and you'll start to notice the other flavours of the food without drowning it in dominanting sweet flavours. It's also hypothesized that some people may have an insulin response just from the taste of something sweet, regardless of it's carbohyrate content (or even the smell or thought of soon-to-be-consumed sweets).
That is one of the reasons I stress the 3 daily limit so much in my videos. It's so often overlooked, and many people never let their tongue retrain its taste buds to actually taste sweet again without overdosing it. Onions can be almost too sweet at times.
While I might have dessert recipe videos, they should be seen as unique treats or couple a month items. Not every a night necessity...
Geez, it sure is complicated! And that says nothing for the difficulty of making the DECISION as to what sweetener to go with too yet.
I'm not on Atkins, but have been primarily using Splenda. I guess the ideal thing is to give up the sweeteners altogether. But I like my sugarfree BBQ sauce and syrup and Crystal Light and occasional diet soda. And who wants oatmeal, coffee, or yogurt without sweeteners? To give up all the preceding would be to deny myself even more foods...ughhh...
Well for complicated and difficulty, I'd say it's no more difficult than choosing the right gas to put in your car. Once you made the right choice, how difficult is it to make the same choice again and again.
I really have never had a feeling of giving up stuff past the first month or so. I focus on the things I can have without restriction, and the stuff I can't or am restricted that's just how I eat now. I simply don't miss what I never have especially when the alternative is more desirable.
@ckrtom2 Evidence indicates that a 12 week administration of Splenda exerted numerous adverse effects, including a reduction in beneficial faecal microflora, an increased faecal pH, and enhanced expression levels of P-gp, CYP3A4, and CYP2D1, which are known to limit the bioavailability of orally administered drugs.
wouldn't a supplement of 'Acidophilus' just counter the slpenda issue? In other words, did the study look at people who added good bacteria while being on splenda?
Thanks again for another great video. I guess my problem is, I don't like to drink plain water all the time. It seems like on Atkins, all you can ever have to drink is plain water, and I like something with a bit of flavor sometimes. The problem is, even a single can or bottle of diet soda contains more than 3 servings of artificial sweetener. What do you generally drink when you want something with flavor?
Remember while that may be true during Induction (check out my water vid for how "spice" up your water). After Induction, you can add other beverages while still keeping the requirement for water though like milk, even some lower carb juice extracts on the appropriate rungs.
BTW - One can (or 12 oz) of diet soda counts as one serving of sweetener.
Myself during the weight loss phase I drank a lot of water each day. It was just one of those things I chugged and got it done.
I have a question, for years I was Diabetic, I had gastric bypass and lost 140lbs they said I no longer have diabetes. , BUT gained 55lbs back. I decided to go low carb diet to lose. NOW when I did have diabetes I used artificial sweetener, Splenda and such which gave me MIGRAINES and as soon as I stopped using them I stopped the migraines. How bad is REAL sugar to use for say tea but not use as much? Carb wise?
Thanks so much for the info, I had an experience the other day with chewing gum, I usually don't but I tried it and wow, did I feel horrible after about 1 hours
Wow talk about being loaded with sweeteners - mannitol, aspartame, ace K, and Splenda on top of it! Holy balls, that is like the quadfecta of sweeteners!
Especially when the companies making the claims on the packets are necessarily honest (the Whey Low one bugs me with their net impact carbs) or aren't potentially thinking of the low carber in mine. The sugar free chocolates are key indicator of this with their bogus net carb numbers when the actual net carbs or glucose digestibility (impact) are much higher than reported.
That's a great point too. The one thing I found after being on low carb is the packet sizes for these sweeteners are HUGE. Truvia is the worst for that. I use only a THIRD of the packet when dusting the top of my mock danish with it, so good job in recognizing you don't need the whole thing.
I would really like to use Truvia more, but it hasn't worked yet well in any of my baking experiments. I use it a lot by itself when I need a granulated product because erythrytol is much better than maltodextrin. In fact, the erythritol is almost as desireable as the rebiana in cheesecake recipes for combining with Splenda/sucralose.
Yep, I think Truvia's or Purevia's parent companies really need to foster a cooking contest or person like Jennifer Eloff to really work with the product. That's one of the reason Splenda does so well in the community, you had someone like Jennifer work with the product enough to know its peculiarities and where it works well and where it does not.
Most home chefs and bakers don't have the time to experiment with something new when what they used still works.
I've done Atkins several times over the years, and I always buy and read the book, and I have NEVER heard that you have to limit your artificial sweeteners to only three servings per day. I have as many servings of artificial sweeteners per day as I want, and I lose as much weight as I want to lose, as quickly as I want to lose it. The number of sweeteners per day does not affect the weight loss for me.
"13. You may use up to three packets of sucralose (Splenda®) daily. (More and more products are being made with Splenda® so if you use any, include those grams in your tally also.)"p.86
Under tips of Induction (p. 95)
"• Limit sweeteners to three packets a day."
As I say in the video notes, if you can consume more great, but the potentiality of cephalic insulin reaction (discussed more in other video) is always there.
Excellent video as usual. But guys, please keep in mind that most powdered sweetners such as Splenda and Stevia are 99% dextrose filler ... ie- they have exactly as much carbs as sugar! If you're watching your carbs, make sure to get liquid stevia or liquid sucralose which are diluted in water instead of dextrose powder. I use "EZ-Sweetz" ... I tried sugar alcohols before but they gave me diarreah bad.
Yep, I hear you there on the filler. If I had more space at the end, I would have explained my choice of liquid Sucralose better. There is not much point to sweetening your cheesecake with a cup of Splenda if it is going to add 24g of Carbs to it. It might not be 96g, but it is still a load to one's system.
I use a similar sweetener, but I believe it is more homemade from ebay.
Thank you so much for the heads up about xylitol and the effects on poor pups! I would be heart sick if anything ever happened to my dog, so I will switch from xylitol to the liquid Splenda you prefer.

What was the daily intake of the Splenda? Do you have a link to the study?
bowulf 2 years ago
@Mumzeeee
wouldn't a supplement of 'Acidophilus' just counter the slpenda issue? In other words, did the study look at people who added good bacteria while being on splenda?

The real stuff or the stevia extract? I tried the real stuff, and just couldn't find a brand that I liked.

As I got closer to goal, I added flavored seltzer water into my diet.

Carb wise?

Wow talk about being loaded with sweeteners - mannitol, aspartame, ace K, and Splenda on top of it! Holy balls, that is like the quadfecta of sweeteners!

@Bonnie90505 I think red 40 is squished bugs!!! The buig is called Cochineal.

Especially when the companies making the claims on the packets are necessarily honest (the Whey Low one bugs me with their net impact carbs) or aren't potentially thinking of the low carber in mine. The sugar free chocolates are key indicator of this with their bogus net carb numbers when the actual net carbs or glucose digestibility (impact) are much higher than reported.
bowulf 2 years ago
I'm using half a serving of Splenda with black coffee once a day. Thanks for the video.
TheUFOReport 2 years ago
That's a great point too. The one thing I found after being on low carb is the packet sizes for these sweeteners are HUGE. Truvia is the worst for that. I use only a THIRD of the packet when dusting the top of my mock danish with it, so good job in recognizing you don't need the whole thing.
bowulf 2 years ago
personally i use truvia on a daily basis with my coffee, etc..
splenda i use for any "dessert" that i may be making like sf cheese cake or sf almond pancakes..
as for sugar alcohols..yeah..they do not make my tummy a happy camper..i def limit those.
great video, Kent!

I would really like to use Truvia more, but it hasn't worked yet well in any of my baking experiments. I use it a lot by itself when I need a granulated product because erythrytol is much better than maltodextrin. In fact, the erythritol is almost as desireable as the rebiana in cheesecake recipes for combining with Splenda/sucralose.
bowulf 2 years ago
@bowulf yeah..i haven't tried truvia for cooking.. I'd rather play it safe with splenda. its a different taste altogether.
MissJanieHere 2 years ago

The number of sweeteners per day does not affect the weight loss for me.
piszczeck 2 years ago
Here are my sources for the limit:
Rule #13 of Induction:

I tried sugar alcohols before but they gave me diarreah bad.
spamllpitdept 2 years ago
Yep, I hear you there on the filler. If I had more space at the end, I would have explained my choice of liquid Sucralose better. There is not much point to sweetening your cheesecake with a cup of Splenda if it is going to add 24g of Carbs to it. It might not be 96g, but it is still a load to one's system.
I use a similar sweetener, but I believe it is more homemade from ebay.
