How in the world do you freaking recover from something like that??? These elite athletes hardly complain about details or aspects of the sport. But this was out of her hands. Letting that dumb loser get away with it was the actual crime. She was never the same. But then it happened in Germany... Not surprising. Good for Monica, returning to the court after that incident. Honestly, I really don't think I would have had the courage to return to the courts, where the same thing could happen AGAIN. Regarding the grunting, I also used to think it was annoying. That is, until I actually played tennis. It's not a conscious effort or a strategy. The 12 months before the stabbing, Seles had a 2-1 lead over Steffi, all 3 GS finals, Seles had won 3 GS + YEC against only 1 GS won by Steffi.
Monica did earn the number 1 by defeating Steffi. Steffi got it back because Monica was brutally attacked.

Which proves beyond any doubt that she was far worse in those years than in 1987-89 and 1993-96 when she made those finals regularily. The German justice system sucks big time. It's totally hopeless. Totally warped. Why was it necessary for Monica to go back to Germany to testify before a proper sentence could be handed down? Seles was asked to testify personally how this minor stabbing affected her psychologically. Just telling this to newspapers is not enough under the German legal system. So all the court had was a minor stab wound caused by a wobbly knife. Not enough to put a mentally ill first-time offender into prison in a country with no death-penalty and killers usually serving only 15-20 years in the slammer.

There's ample independent psychological and medical evaluation. And the very act of stabbing and the criminal himself were first witnessed by hundreds at the stadium and then caught on video. What more does the court want? Why put the victim through hell all over again???

When the witness for gd reason (illness etc) can't appear before the court, a written statement will suffice. In Monica's case, don't you think that gd reason exists? Parche got exactly what he wanted. He ended a young woman's career, opened the door for his heroine to return to the top of the rankings, and received no punishment for it. Perhaps the Frau Richterin was a Steffi fan too.
