@waywered Nuclear bombs can only get to a point that even though the explosion may be bigger, the damage effect doesn't. At a certain point, all you do is compress the atmosphere to the point it no longer compresses, and the main force of the explosion goes up into space where it has no effect.

Even if the blast didn't kill you, ash and volcanic winter would. It would take a VERY long time for life to come back after that.

@waywered Nuclear bombs can only get to a point that even though the explosion may be bigger, the damage effect doesn't. At a certain point, all you do is compress the atmosphere to the point it no longer compresses, and the main force of the explosion goes up into space where it has no effect.

Why no bigger bomb is simple: A-bomb destroys its tagret 10^3 times, the H-bomb 10^9 times. Even for carpet bombing there is a balance between number and power of bombs a plane or a missle can carrry. 5 bombs can hit more targets and do a lot more damage then 1 bomb 5 or even 50 times strong.
