  • Me and two other women are going to sing this for church. Harmonizing should be called HARDonizing!(Yes I already know I cant spell)

O brother wher art thou is one of the last good movies they made in a very long time. This has HEART. Not many so called" works of art" have that any more.

  • If u dun mind, I gon sin me sum more!

  • I believe in Jesus Christ!!!

  • yes sir

  • bliss

  • Good Movie. Good Song and Singing. By the way Prayer is the answer to doing all the other things Christians should do including Loving God and one another. And to another Post ... Jesus was God and is to be worshipped. He was all man and all God, but not all of God. While God in the flesh walked this earth, God as Spirit ran and filled the universe. Get saved, then get Baptized and be on your way to Heaven. THANKS FOR THE SONG.

  • So that's what I meant about old fashioned Christians which many I knew. Not the kind I have been hearing about from everyone here.

  • Oh and for the record let me really make people mad. No not you guys commenting I already know how you feel. This is just general info for Christians and non-Christians alike. Jesus did not want to be worshiped. He wanted to be followed and his followers to be "Christlike" in their thinking, and doing. He wasn't about politics at all. He was a champion of those who were rejects of society. He hated money and power of this world, and gave love when he in return got hate.

  • To continue I was just touched by the simplicity of what's in the song, and the act of faith of the people. Anyway everyone wants just to vent so go ahead, but I give you credit for coming across with your convictions. It means you are thinking. Oh yeah I almost forgot, I am big on separation of Church and State.Next comment plz.......

  • OK I think I get it. A lot of people present day and past really suck at being Christian. But tell me what are you mad at? and no I am in no way an Evangelical or Baptist, which we have lots of in the South, and by the way I support the Palestine People's right to exist and have their own state. That said tell me what's wrong with Jesus' sermon on the Mount. You know "Blessed are the Peacemakers...", AND I support Obama and probably more left leaning than most of you all commenting.

  • This is one of the best songs I ever heard!

  • The odyssey was a pretty good read.

  • The christians(in america) was against mix marriage, removing slavery women voting and now they are working on gay marriage dont kid urself. Christians are judgemental and often hit on minorities. Still a good song.

  • @cellofingers That's because in the 50's and earlier more people were Christian. They didn't have as many people to judge at the time, but they still did. (African Americans, Jews, Blacks)

  • HI REDDIT

  • I'm an atheist. But I love this song c:

  • What a great song, in addition I totally don't feel like arguing about religion here.

  • Love this moment in the movie.

  • Thanks for making this not available on mobile. Helped a ton

  • Atheist, but I'll always love this song.

  • OK everyone. I see where you are coming from and maybe I have a (as was said in the movie Cool Hand Luke) "failure to communicate" issue. First what I meant was that Christianity has turned political (modern times --yes I know all about inquisition etc..). Jesus was never about politics, and no he would never join the Republican party. Nor would he probably be welcome in a majority of church's as they now stand. Just listen to the song and focus on what Jesus said about love and forgiveness.

  • O Brother Where Art Thou... Everytime this excellent movie is on TV it just, magnetizes me. I just watch it. Every. Time. Even if I have things to do.

  • 23 year old guy crying to this.

  • fuck you reddit

  • George Clooney is a southern boy, Tim Blake Nelson is Jewish, and John Turturro is Italian, but they all do well as Southerners! Love this movie - it really treats all the typical themes of the South.

  • YOU STOLE FROM MAH KIN!

  • They all look like zombies. Powerful message to those who think of letting Santorum lead the free world.

  • I feel if that those who remember reading the Odyssey get all the references, and understand it better.

  • awsome movie

  • AWesome song as well

  • this is an awesome movie LOVE it

  • THIS was sang by slaves in the river the went down to there was a lady who would free them so they sang this so she would find them

  • @sararock122800 I recently read a slave narrative and the former slave said he remembers singing this song from his childhood on his plantation.

  • haha!

  • Hey NicokeRoxYourSoxOff- I think you really needed to be in pre-school that day- judging by the way you write!

  • Okay, so nobody will probably ever read this or care...but anyways! haha this was like one of my first memories when I was a baby, I remember when I stayed home from pre-school one day and I remember a scene in this movie with a tornado or hurricane? haha I don't remember but if you seen this movie then you probably know what I'm talking about! and my moms always loved this movie, so as I got older I loved it haha, i recently found this song again at my nana's house! great song :)

  • The Lotus Eaters.... :D

  • I actually met the band and Allison Krauss at the Fox Theatre compliments of Cracker Barrell. We got to go back stage and have our picture took with her. She and her band really are superb human beings. Very quiet and humble. That was a nice surprise. No wonder she sings like an angel

  • Growing up in the South in the 1950's, this was a scene right out of my childhood, and it brought tears to my eyes. Kids today have no idea of community and fellowship, much less faith and belief in something beyond their iPhones and Facebooks.

  • @tf424 Amen, and what a shame. But all is not lost: I recently started attending the local Evangelical Free Church and those guys have a handle on the community, fellowship and a basic belief that this song is all about. And, for me, what a blessed relief to move beyond Orthodox Christianity.*tears here, too*

  • Well. Dang. Don't know what you went through down there in Waycross, but I can respect your opinion. Out west back in the day we had a pretty nice bunch of church folks that would give you the shirt off there backs no questions asked. But that was my experience. Today Christians really need to get away from worldly politics, Jesus was about the world to come not this one, you know.." render Cesar the things unto Cesar's.... But God love ya man keep on plugging!

  • This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. And I am 13.

  • im dum

  • For you younger folks that's how older Christians used to be without all the judging condemning and self-righteous behavior we have seen since the 60's forward.

  • @cellofingers Sure wish more people could read your comment, well said sir.

  • @cellofingers ..THAT'S INCORRECT...If anything they were MORE OPEN about passing judgment PUBLICLY and not behind your back... in those days...WTF are you TALKING ABOUT and what country did you live in?? I was in WayCross, GA...get ya FACTS straight young'un...

  • @cellofingers Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • @cellofingers i like that

  • @cellofingers What about the Puritans?

  • @mtsumusic Or the writ of excommunication in the Roman Catholic Church? Isn't that judging and condemning before the 60s?

  • @cellofingers

besides the times before that where you were killed for not having the same beliefs

  • @cellofingers If you're a good nonjudgmental/condeming Chrisstian, good on you! But let's avoid golden era thinking. I REALLY don't think Christians were generally more accepting of different races, genders, and sexuality pre-civil rights movements in the 60s.

  • @martinaggie01 Right on! History is definitely on your side.

  • @cellofingers Apart from the Inquisition, witch burnings, forced conversions, etc.

  • @cellofingers Um except for a Christian run United States which banned (and continues to ban in most cases) the rights of anyone who was Black, female, Japanese, Irish, Muslim, Old, Poor, Queer, Retarded,&c....you know, but yeah, I guess if no one has any rights there's nothing to judge...

  • @cellofingers Yeah, with our foggy memories it seems like that's the way it was back then, but you know... everybody's reeaal easy goin' when EVERYBODY is some flavor of Christian. Also, let's not forget the occasional lynchings and cross burnings.

    It's a great song, though.

  • @qxe

Uh, shouldn't you be in Gaza -- slaughtering toddlers?

  • @freddytheflintstone1 Actually, I'm an atheist. I prefer to eat babies here at home in the U.S. ; )

Let me guess, you're an American Evangelical Christian that supports Israel in every matter with undying zeal, no questions asked? So any perceived slight to Christianity is thereby an attack on Israel, so by extension, I'm some kind of Palestinian monster that enjoys slaughtering Jewish toddlers?

Congratulations, that's longest leap of goofy, twisted logic I've seen in a while.

    Crazy much?

  • @freddytheflintstone1 You know, I seriously doubt if you could find Gaza on a map even WITH access to the internet to help you. It's obvious you're a Christian troll.

Tell me, is your god so weak that he needs your help to be anonymously mean to people on the internet, to 'defend' his honor? That's your pathetic job in service to god?

Wow. I'm kind of ashamed for you... that makes me a little sad that you're so brainwashed.

  • @cellofingers Um. Right. Medieval Times would like to have a talk with yew.

  • @TheRainbowCuddles word. lmao when i read that ... *FACEPALM*

  • Comment removed

  • @cellofingers Say that to the Catholic Church and their Inquisition. Nothing like some good ole Christian torture and book-burning. The era doesn't make a difference -- the person does.

  • @cellofingers what revolting behaviour these modern day christians have! oh wait... the crusades.

  • @cellofingers OH shit what the fuck? do you think christianity only RECENTLY became fucked up? oh boy you are fucking WRONG

  • @cellofingers Christianity sucked since the beginning. who cares about the time before the 60s?

  • @cellofingers crusades?

  • @cellofingers bullshit lol

  • @cellofingers what about the inquisition, crusades, witch trials? christianity has been the same for hundreds and hundreds of years

  • @cellofingers No they weren't they have been judgmental assholes since the Crusades!!! My GOD man... look at history! I wish they were like this!!!!

  • @cellofingers the crusades

  • @cellofingers Bullshit. Pure bullshit. Christians are now the best they've ever been, and I still hate most of them

  • @cellofingers What, the 1660s?

  • Magnifique chanson...

  • Come on in, boys: the water's fine.

  • lol not the video i was looking 4 but i will say she has a beautiful voice ^_^ this wold be gr8 in o brother where art thou :D

  • @monsterenergydrinkzz it is in that movie, i'm sorry, but please, fix your spelling

  • @FurryFortress2

below is the video i was talking about. Alison Krauss dos not sing in the movie.

    /watch?v=82_bhD0_Trw

  • Ty Ren !

  • brings me back to reality after a hard day fighting a war

  • only AK can pull this one off

  • Just great!

  • this song reminds me of the good old songs I used to sing in church as a child living in the south and singing gospel with my mom.

  • Clooney was okay, but it was Tim Blake Nelson (Delmar) who REALLY made this movie great.

  • Not religious at all, but my teacher had this in a video for Pearl Harbor, and I really liked it. idc what it's about, she has a great voice.

  • ridiculous video, but great song

  • @mvslkv What is wrong with you? That's O' Brother Where Art Thou!

  • @TheNinjaWizards having an opinion doesn't make a person wrong :-)

  • @mvslkv In this case, it most definitely does.

  • Come on in Boys, the water's fine!

  • they played this at my grandpas funeral, and as I listened I believe my grandfather was too. I am sad he is dead but also glad hes in a better place,"the river"

  • Alison Krauss is a fantastic musician. Perfection in everything she does.

  • Hey i'm trying to trace my heritage back does anyone know where and which domination of christianity these hymn is from thanks :)

  • @lovelee199 google is your friend even though it knows about all the disturbing stuff you search for on it. XD

  • i love how this movie is a 1930's rendition of Homer's "The Odessy" ahh George Clooney did wonderful with the lead

  • @SkiTZO715 my family loves that story The Odessy this movie was well done agreed very much

  • @SkiTZO715

    Clooney was SUPERB

  • @SkiTZO715 I love Cold Mountain for the same reason (minus clooney of course)

  • Beautifully haunting.

  • beautiful song! i cry every time. Alison Krauss sang i beautifully!

  • this made me cry.

  • Classic!

  • My choir at church is doing this song the last Sunday in this month.

  • Actually, I am not sure which religious system this is all about, but one thing is for sure: this is not to be confused with Jesus' teaching. Gospel is teaching its readers to pray in full privacy, and of course not to congregate and to go INTO some river to pray. This must be some fake guidance for ignorant sanctimonious idiots, or what?

  • This has nothing with devotion, nothing with the Bible. This is a WASP & KKK fiction in attempt to say 'HEAVEN - whites only'. Shameless racism unable to comprehend the fact that 'My house shall be called a house of prayer to all nations'. A serious, dangerous mental/spiritual problem is all about. She just PLAYS a role of a humble, devoted person, but behind that make-up is something completely different. Sorry Alison, you failed.

  • @TheChange1961 This is a MOVIE set when racism was accepted. This scene would not have fit the tone of the movie if (as I think your saying) there should be blacks included into this scene. I guess this movie is wrong and its ok for Spike Lee to make his racist movies.

  • @vidcreations I do not watch movies, not much, but I know that almost entire R'n'B today has that sick trend. Then, what to say about Jamaican Rastafascists, and so on...Only really great people keep the thing right. Check the biography of Dave Brubeck, for an example. Mary J. Blige sings Led Zeppelin tune, and that's the point. However, races ought to be together on stage of any true messenger today. And is there ANY black/colored person involved in Plant/Krauss collaboration...?

  • @vidcreations If you think it's racist for someone to make movies concentrating on a black cast I think that's all we need to know about your opinions, really.

  • @scalporf Spike Lee has openly stated he wants to make movies with only black cast. Not black subject matter. Form your own opinion there.

  • @TheChange1961 you are sadly mistaken. tell him that at the gates and he will say she is a god fearing woman and is proud. ill pray for you

  • @sugmagnolia4 'Proud'...let me see... Pride is on the list of human heart's pollutions together with envy, adultery, murders, malice and so on. Strange, but I do not consider Alison to be much too proud, it is a better side of her, keeping her in a pretty good shape. Pride is not a virtue, as it is accepted usually. There is no need to pray for me, not at all.

  • I am not religious either- I am a follower of the Messiah and Savior, the Son of God, Jesus Christ :D

  • Alison has the voice of an Angel that is so soothing!

  • i ain't religious could mean mean i have no moral code

  • Religion

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

  • i aint religious at all but i do love this song!!

  • [iminent=pPucz6YVffOB]

    _____________

Je viens juste de t’envoyer un BigEmo super cool !

  • we all need to Pray in this country, this country was for freedom of religon put god back in all our lives.

  • @greeneyedlady0460 Yes, PRAYING! Quick, everybody stop doing your jobs and get on your knees to pray... no, don't get back up and get back to work, just keep praying. When the infrastructure starts crumbling, the food starts rotting and nothing is getting done, PRAY HARDER!! God will probably answer just in time to save us all.

    Oh wait, I forgot...

Two hands working accomplishes more than a million hands clasped in prayer.

BTW, "Freedom of Religion" means the freedom to NOT have religion, too

  • I was singing this at work one day and I had a customer tell me I should try out for American Idol... So I think I am going to post a vid of me singing.. But I don't think can compare to Alison K.... She's amazing!!!

  • Lord i m coming to you

  • I love how he is holding a roasted squirrel on a stick at the beginning.

  • Start singing it at school. If Michigan can have foot baths for Muslims, we can sing this beautiful Brush Arbor song. Look up Brush Arbor, bet you don't have a clue. It is what early Christians did when they didn't have a Church, so they went down to the River or out in the woods.

  • love the song but don't start singing it during a school assembly and get everyone to singing it with you or the principle will get angry

  • gopher on a stick anyone?

  • show me the way..

  • I love this Song !

  • thats the true story

  • i know the story for this song there was this lady who freed servents and the servents were alwoad tto sing so they went to the river and sang this song so she ccould find them and the other peopple ccouldent

  • im 14 and this is probly the most touching thing ive ever heard

  • @jackiechi1 this song has been song by many people for a very long time, look it up the song go back many many year am i am sure you can friend some other great verisions

loook under "down by the valley to pray" many under that name as well and i think the oringal. on another not and I love you alison Krausss, can you belive she jammed with Robert Plant, how cool is that

  • @jackiechi1 when you are my age, 26, then you have heard songs that are just as touching as this. some are evern MORE touching. "i would do anything for love(but i wont do that)" by meatloaf is one. watch the videoversion. some other songs is so emotional that the tears wont stop falling.

  • I agree wholeheartedly with your comments on the film and the soundtrack, it is quite a work of art and a real gem. This song is just one of many fine tracks on it. Thanks for sharing.

  • It is beautiful and pure and transcendent of ideologies.

  • This song always makes me tear up! Such an angelic voice!

  • A christian hardcore band I used to know used to sing this before every set back in the day. It's amazing how this song transcends genres, and types of people. I still remember the hundred or so teens who most would say could never be saved with their hands up praising God as we all closed our eyes and sat in the presence. And it's not just those who love God who can love this song, the feeling transcends beliefs and styles-- and all that remains is the message of redemption.

  • TG for T. Bone Burrent.

  • im not religious i just love this song so much, its just... puts you in a wonderful mood

  • Goosebumps, everytime.

  • I feel like my soul is being touched by this song.

  • Not a religious person by a long shot but that singing could tempt me to the river to be born again, alleluia!

  • One of the purest voices ever...except for Emmy Lou. Perect

  • i dont have a "religion." religion means following rules and regulations and thats not what being saved means. It means to believe that god died for our sins. I dont work for my salvation because its easy, "My yoke is easy my burden is light..." Its as simple as that:) BTW: its not like im some freak, im 13 and normal. im not some nerd who sits around and reads the bible 24/7...anyways, i think everyone should be thankful and happy that jesus saved us:)

  • good song and i lovethis movie hahaha a 15 yr old saying this to lol

  • I love the plot in the description and the scene and this song so much!

  • Amen, should I say more? I think this song says it all !!!

  • beautiful song and voice...regardless of any religious affiliation

  • oh this is christian song? i'm a moslem and i like this song. why religions let a good song unable to be heard? :)

  • @lalalajrengjreng why did you spell your own religion wrong?

  • @lakota1010 haha it's just not how it spelled in my country, so i usually write moslem. problem?

  • I don't care who or what you pray to, the river is a metaphor for life. It flows on whether we are here or not. Be it Allah, Buddha, Jesus or other, can we not join in spirituality and come in to the river and pray? The world needs faith, and like I said, I don't care what your faith is, can we come on down to the river? I can.

  • discover in skins haha

  • This has to be one of the most moving songs I have ever heard. I like it because its talking about bringing family and friends together. That's the real message here, religious or not. A voice of this calibur can be appreciated by all cultures and religions.

  • there aint good song like this on the radio these days if there was they would banned it because some ppl would have to listen about the goodness of god !

  • Beautiful song (: ♥

  • Thank you Jesus. I want in the river.

  • Beautiful, beautiful song. Inspiring.

  • Come on in boys.. the water's fine~ :)

  • This is the first song I ever sang in public. I love it so much, and you can relate whether you're religious or not. It's about togetherness, not simply religion.

  • @heyitscaroline you are fucking retarded, the word PRAY is in the title, how isn't it about religion?

  • @KILLABEES666 Chill Winston

  • As it says at the beginning, the movie is based upon the Odyssey, right down to the Cyclops, Big Dan Teague but the way they do it in old timin' fashion is a classic. What do you think that quality is that moves even agnostics and non-believers? It is a common thread that runs thru us from time immemorial.

  • This song brings tears to my eyes, it's so beautiful.

  • I love this song, but I wish there were some bass voices amongst the choir.
