That is just how it is. Some days guitar playing is a breeze, other days it is like playing with boxing gloves. One of the toughest instruments to play consistently well I must say. He is probably disappointed with this but it is still a great song and he pulls off some fab licks anyway.
You don't have to stand up for him! I love Eric Johnson and I'm a massive fan but this performance sucks! No one is saying it's his fault aswell and it is because he is playing so fast so they can fit in commercials that it is bad. If he read people comments saying that it sucked I'm sure he would just laugh and anyhow it's not to bad I bet 99% of you cant play it (including me) Lol! Just saying.
@Nightspark101 Of course, that being said, what's up with his hair? Not exactly rocking the mullet we saw on Austin City Limits. I guess the hairdresser was in a bit of a rush as well.

@sirroxalot Wow, too bad he had to alter the song so people could see the commericals. Twenty years later, people are still watching this, and nobody remembers the commercials.
@hinatarock3r Prefiero que Vevo suba los videos en alta definición a que un pelmaso lo haga en 240p, youtube es un sitio enorme, necesita fondos para mantenerse gratis. ¿Para qué quejarse si es posible reflexionar?
Usually, short versions aren't as good as the long ones. Here, shortening it a bit doesn't take anything away from the song at all. All of the good stuff is still there.
@ODannyJr Yeah. This is something I've noticed about his live performances of Cliffs. On his Austin City Limits dvd, it's faster than the studio version, too.
@yoseewails Don't get me wrong, I love EJ and his tone. But he appears so nervous in this video that even tone sounds like it itself is nervous as well.
That was cool. And that was a very young, unheard of, EJ on Leno. He had him sign a vynal copy. Yeah, he blew a note or two, but made up for it with some nice improvs. There was also a lot of nice enregy.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I just came across this on an old VHS tape but it was missing the very beginning. This was the appearance that introduced me to Eric Johnson and made me a fan. Never understood why it looked like he was wrestling with his guitar until I read an interview where he talked about being a tone freak and using impossible fingerings to get the sound he wants. Then it all made sense.
He's possibly the greatest musician to ever pick up a guitar, Gods bow down at his skills, his playing could bring eternal peace and joy to the universe... but he wears the most horrible dress shirts. EJ forevs!
Well seeing as how all his other shows take about 7-8 minutes for cliffs of dover, shows really only give about 4-5 minutes to do a song. Doesnt matter if its Jay Leno a time slot is a time slot. Now adays you can go a few extra minutes... but this is old so yeah lol. He had to improvise and rush through it without making it sound like complete crap. Still a good jon and a hell of a guitar player.
Still a fantastic performance, but it does seem that I can only really find two GREAT performances of Cliffs of Dover, Live at Austin and the Bottomline, everything else seems to be a little sloppy by comparison? Don't get me wrong, the guy is still an absolute master, and I would give it all to be able to play like this, just wondered if anyone else felt the same?
@blackmetalcreed ...u fucking shut the fuck up....i'm not saying he is bad...he is one of the greatest guitarist of this era...and my idol as well....i just said he doesn't sound good in this video as always...nothing much than this....and u piece of shit is telling me off..:O....u wanker...shut ur cocksucking mouth up...u little prick :@
Seems to me that he was rushing. Probably from a combination of nerves AND time slot issues. Unless you're an extremely well known artist to the general public even a late night show is only going to give you around 4 minutes to perform a song. Considering the average performance of Cliffs of Dover is usually in the 7-10 minute range and the studio version is still 4:09 I think Eric felt a need to push things a bit. You can hear them counting to commercial at the end...
That fat bastard isn't worthy of Eric Johnson on his tv show. Also i suggest that all guitarists learn to play this song, its great for building up speed.
He looks so stressed but perfectly understood; you get one of those shows, then the tv producer is telling you, just 3 min body n you got a 5-6 min song (F!@#$%^&*%$#ng fancy shit, but is promo) anyways, he needs no excuses; great tune great guitar player,he's always awesome
he really miss that note!! this isn't a normal eric!! i think he's too nervous..but with these mistakes, you guys now realize how perfect eric has been..
@richardwu0609 Lol he did mess up badly several times. I know he improvised... but he messed up on the improv. A bad note is a bad note... and you can cleary hear it.
of course i can clearly hear the bad note, but people make mistakes sometimes even a guitar master like eric.what i try to say is put more concentrations on his muscial stuff rather than the bad note,or you will never enjoy the music
humust be drunk or high or something cause he is messin up in some places , usually u cant even tell wen he messes up (1:04, 1:29 , 2:04) but messing up is okay because we ALL do it......rite!!

Meaning: It's not phenomenally outstanding, per usual, but 'merely' very good. One tend to get spoiled by Eric's otherwise spelndid performances so should he not be to par with his usual self it annoys us as much as it does him.
Stupid!!! he never misses a note!!! He really doing it in that way.. As you observe him in his every performance he's taking off some of the best parts of his compositions.. Not only him but most of guitarists.. and on this early age this are the times when Cliffs of Dover is not complete yet..
quickknight24 said, "and on this early age this are the times when Cliffs of Dover is not complete yet."
No offense, but huh? This was done in 1991, and he'd been playing this song since 1984 (and probably earlier). And he recorded it on the album Jay mentions at the beginning. What do you mean it's "not complete yet"?
And yes, he did miss a number of notes in this performance. He was flat quite a few times. Probably nervous being on the Jay Leno show (I would be, wouldn't you?).
does it matter? can u play like tht?, so wht if he missed abit of notes and pls tell me how he can keep up with his band m8's at tht speed of guitar picking....
HOLY CRAP, HE'S COMING TO PINELLAS COUNTY THIS MARCH!

Stupid!!! he never misses a note!!! He really doing it in that way.. As you observe him in his every performance he's taking off some of the best parts of his compositions.. Not only him but most of guitarists.. and on this early age this are the times when Cliffs of Dover is not complete yet..
