  • HOLY CRAP, HE'S COMING TO PINELLAS COUNTY THIS MARCH!

nothing ever cool happens here, lots of old retired people. I'm seeing this guy, one of the last good musicians that haven't died yet.

  • That is just how it is. Some days guitar playing is a breeze, other days it is like playing with boxing gloves. One of the toughest instruments to play consistently well I must say. He is probably disappointed with this but it is still a great song and he pulls off some fab licks anyway.

  • i wish i was this skilled at guitar

  • amazing

  • I was born in wrong period of time. :(

  • @subscribermann673 thats a movie :D

  • For EJ that wasn't very good compared to what he is capable of. For most anyone else else that was great.

  • Look at his fingers for Christ's sake. He had no choice but to become a guitarist.

  • Nice song... 1:12 is a sample of another song Nelly-wadsyaname theory of nowadays 'original' music

  • @zelensemafor actually Nelly sampled K-Ci and Jojo's "All My Life" which borrowed from Cliff's of Dover (without any credit)

  • @igotwhips

You are correct. Eric Johnson was first to use it.

  • @zelensemafor Rap was never even "t" of "theory of original music"...rap is crap, dude

  • @umid95 i meant it sarcastically dude thats why i used interpunction.

  • Last Irish Talent seen on Jew TV

  • @oaky132x Your a fuckin' tard. He was born in Austin, Tx. If your gonna be a wanna be troll bigot, then for fucks sake get your facts straight.

  • That's the worst I have ever heard Eric Johnson sound/play, and his worst is STILL better than 99.9% of other guitar players BEST!

  • Dude, jay leno is freakin old!!

  • o'johnson

  • rough night for eric

  • it sounds like a fucking trumpet

  • The pitch of this clip is so fucked up I thought it was Ash Soular who played it.

  • nose de que año es eso, pero la rompe el tema

  • I dont know why but when I think about Eric Johnson, the name Yngwie J. Malmsteen comes up as well

    .

  • Where did you get your jacket?

  • Ouch this makes me feel better about learning this note for note.

  • great song but this is such a painful performance to watch

  • "Will you sign this?" -"Sure"

  • didn't know he was on leno, is there a better audio recording of this somewhere?

  • soi ivan y me gusta johnson

  • WoW he's human ,he made a bunch of mistakes on his own song, still one of the greatest rock gtr payers !!!

  • never saw this, great thanks

  • dis is way faster dan guitar hero

  • @lr98932 well, yeh, it will have to be, he will have been given a certain time to play it in

  • He might have been nervous, but he still played it better than we could!

  • I allmost craped my self because of the trombone player at the beginning because I play trombone but I came heere to see Cliffs of Dovaaar!!!

  • love this damn song

  • I need to have that jacket

  • JAY LENO! JAY LENO! Is he still on TV?

  • 1:05 he flies ! :O !

  • @janithemani LMAO! Haha good spot!

  • @MrZovar

    ^^

  • Holy crap, you're totally right! He....is a god. 0_O

    @janithemani

  • fuck jay leno

  • You don't have to stand up for him! I love Eric Johnson and I'm a massive fan but this performance sucks! No one is saying it's his fault aswell and it is because he is playing so fast so they can fit in commercials that it is bad. If he read people comments saying that it sucked I'm sure he would just laugh and anyhow it's not to bad I bet 99% of you cant play it (including me) Lol! Just saying.

  • @Nightspark101 Of course, that being said, what's up with his hair? Not exactly rocking the mullet we saw on Austin City Limits. I guess the hairdresser was in a bit of a rush as well.

  • awesome

  • really fast i mean damn

  • mals ae Johnson mas tem uns caras ae q querem te imitar fazendo covers baratos de playback... seu eu fosse vc ia cobrar direitos autorais... so vc pesquisar ae no youtube q vc encontra varios...

    mals ae

  • He is rushed. He's trying to fit a 6 minute song in between the 4 minutes before commercial.

  • @sirroxalot Wow, too bad he had to alter the song so people could see the commericals. Twenty years later, people are still watching this, and nobody remembers the commercials.

  • why it`s so fast!!!!?????

  • He was nervous, you can tell, but he still made even the mistakes sound pretty good.

  • his shyness is fantastic i like him...

  • For this, fuck Jay Leno. (Rock on EJ!!!)

  • Usually, short versions aren't as good as the long ones. Here, shortening it a bit doesn't take anything away from the song at all. All of the good stuff is still there.

  • He was just nervous. Look at some of his other live performances and you will see that 99% of the time he is spot on.

  • what happen to him..looks like he not feel so relax..haha but still cool...he not blank..

  • He is a little shy.Great guitarist.

  • drummers dickin it up for him and bass player.

  • now that's f'n fat tone... just sayin'.... I truly dig how Jay asks him to sign the album at the end of the video

  • now that's f'n fat tone... just sayin'

  • Check out Eric Blaszczak's live version of this song...Incredible.Way better tone than this even though I know EB's mentor is EJ

  • he's cute :)

  • He's fast , truly da best

  • This is faster than the original...

  • @ODannyJr Yeah. This is something I've noticed about his live performances of Cliffs. On his Austin City Limits dvd, it's faster than the studio version, too.

  • 6 people can't play on real guitar or beat it on expert in guitar hero

  • HOLY CRAP JAY LENO WITHOUT GRAY HAIR!!!!

  • @NHBluesMan Yeah I know. I nearly shit myself too :)

  • @NHBluesMan HOLY CRAP.....STILL HAS THE CHIN!! LOL

  • Wow, and that aint a good "Wow". Even his Tone sounds a little nervous here.

  • @9erMatthew i know...he is usually always right on the dot, but this is a kind of sloppy performance

  • @KevinFuxurMOM1993 what,,, he only missed one note....

  • @9erMatthew ...pfffft... that is great tone from the bridge position on a strat... you oughta know....

  • @yoseewails Don't get me wrong, I love EJ and his tone. But he appears so nervous in this video that even tone sounds like it itself is nervous as well.

  • @9erMatthew Its just the video quality, dont try to tell me u wouldnt be nervous

  • @HairnationVH1 Oh I ain't gonna say I wouldn't be nervous. Having an audience as big as the one here would scare the shit outta me.

  • impressão minha ou a guitarra dele esta desafinada?!

  • I'm sorry but he looks like a high hippy here

  • Justin Bieber has 6 accounts on youtube

  • @retal06 stfu and go suck Justin Bieber's dick if your that obsessed with him.

  • @DarkRoxas36o -> profile -> Interests: cod4, ass raping LOL FAGGOT

  • @retal06 LOL you actual went view my profile hahahah, I don't even need a comeback.

  • That was cool. And that was a very young, unheard of, EJ on Leno. He had him sign a vynal copy. Yeah, he blew a note or two, but made up for it with some nice improvs. There was also a lot of nice enregy.

  • the only thing is he's not good at improvising. this guy is more of calculated player, but beautiful

  • @papapumpy are you serious ? he's an amazing player, ESPECIALLY when it comes to improvising. You have obviously not heard any of his work...

  • 6 people have no brain and will never hit the slightist bit of puberty

  • One word for this performance..........nervous. That is all

  • @stevegrierson He always seems to look like that

  • the master :)))

  • 6 people werent raised right

  • Ive never seen a Fender so expertly handled!

  • lmao look at jay leno

  • now THATS what I'm talkin' bout !!!

  • fast tempo

  • lol the recording equipment back then couldn't even keep up with his skills. you can't even see his fingers because they are so fast.

  • Haha, real fun for the bassist. It would be so amazing to meet Eric though. God bless his fashion :)

  • mantabbb

  • Thank you so much for uploading this. I just came across this on an old VHS tape but it was missing the very beginning. This was the appearance that introduced me to Eric Johnson and made me a fan. Never understood why it looked like he was wrestling with his guitar until I read an interview where he talked about being a tone freak and using impossible fingerings to get the sound he wants. Then it all made sense.

  • He's possibly the greatest musician to ever pick up a guitar, Gods bow down at his skills, his playing could bring eternal peace and joy to the universe... but he wears the most horrible dress shirts. EJ forevs!

  • sometimes he was squeezing too much into that measure man...but what the hell...I do it too hahaha

  • can you say scalloped frets? still amazing composer and guitar play

  • AMAZING!!! soooo soulful!!! =]=]=]

  • he was nervous, and he play it twice as fast as in the studio version :) I didn't think it was possible :D

  • this is hippie-looking Eric Johnson

  • It looks like his frets are scaloped.. ?

  • you cant say he missed notes... he wrote the song, he can take notes out if he wants to. he can do whatever he wants to do with the song.

  • great performance!! mistake is surrender, not what he did!

    a true guitarist!

  • That's Jay Leno!!! LOL He is different now!! ;D

  • @JokerJohnJoker fatter, older and grayer, bigger chin

  • Awesome song.

  • Well seeing as how all his other shows take about 7-8 minutes for cliffs of dover, shows really only give about 4-5 minutes to do a song. Doesnt matter if its Jay Leno a time slot is a time slot. Now adays you can go a few extra minutes... but this is old so yeah lol. He had to improvise and rush through it without making it sound like complete crap. Still a good jon and a hell of a guitar player.

  • @MeerStudios

Exactly. He had to fit the song to a time slot. Still a great performance.

  • for the dutch ppl.......die gast kan gitaar spele 8-| ......hij's goed!!

  • Still a fantastic performance, but it does seem that I can only really find two GREAT performances of Cliffs of Dover, Live at Austin and the Bottomline, everything else seems to be a little sloppy by comparison? Don't get me wrong, the guy is still an absolute master, and I would give it all to be able to play like this, just wondered if anyone else felt the same?

  • @swoody89 4 some i do 2 y cant u play the song like the studio version anymore :(

  • he doesn't sounds like pro in this video...he sounds like someone doing a cover in bad way ...eheheh

  • @wildguitaristf5 SHUT UR FUCKING MOUTH OFF U JACKASS

  • @blackmetalcreed ...u fucking shut the fuck up....i'm not saying he is bad...he is one of the greatest guitarist of this era...and my idol as well....i just said he doesn't sound good in this video as always...nothing much than this....and u piece of shit is telling me off..:O....u wanker...shut ur cocksucking mouth up...u little prick :@

  • thats god playing the guitar

  • wow, this was his moment

  • omg jay leno is so young

  • i was not even born .

  • @weirdOparade me neither

  • Seems to me that he was rushing. Probably from a combination of nerves AND time slot issues. Unless you're an extremely well known artist to the general public even a late night show is only going to give you around 4 minutes to perform a song. Considering the average performance of Cliffs of Dover is usually in the 7-10 minute range and the studio version is still 4:09 I think Eric felt a need to push things a bit. You can hear them counting to commercial at the end...

  • if he would have missed a note you would not hear a note you dumbasses ...

  • he didnt mess up notes atuall its because hes live it sounds diffrent i think he knows how to play his own song

  • @burale12 I think he knows even he makes mistakes ;)

  • is that a scallop neck?

  • This song is fun to play on the guitar. I almost have it memorized and Im going to play live at my first gig at a coffee place.

  • well, i know he was on a show and he couldnt be on long but man he skipped my favorite part ;(

ah well, still good, as always

  • That fat bastard isn't worthy of Eric Johnson on his tv show. Also i suggest that all guitarists learn to play this song, its great for building up speed.

  • @jpdidit more specifically, speed stickato picking, as well as string skipping and arpeggios

  • That fat bastard isn't worthy of Eric Johnson on his tv show.

  • it sounds a little bit like a christmas melody xD

  • My fav. song to do on Guitar Hero

  • Sounds horrible here, don't get me wrong, I love this guy/song.

  • Jay wanted an autograph LOL

  • He sounds really nervous and uncharacteristically rushed. Still a great player though.

  • If my good notes sounded 1/2 as good as Eric Johnsons bad notes I think i would be happy

  • theres no bad notes this is Eric johnson so he's the one who made it up so shut up ppl who say it dont sound like to days =D rock no Eric johnson!

  • lmao....count the "bad notes" if you must..all I hear is a great jam

  • hahah you guys are funny...keep up the great work..

  • He looks so stressed but perfectly understood; you get one of those shows, then the tv producer is telling you, just 3 min body n you got a 5-6 min song (F!@#$%^&*%$#ng fancy shit, but is promo) anyways, he needs no excuses; great tune great guitar player,he's always awesome

  • @victoritoguitar I wish I could play that good with those mistakes! :o)

  • @dancespook Me too!

  • I wonder if he was trying to play at a faster tempo or he just started rushing a bit because he was nervous to be on Jay Leno show...

  • And who said that the music must be perfect? Indeed, the imperfections give to the music his perfectness!

  • no one cares that he missed some notes,he still awesome

  • he didnt miss any notes, its just a live variation of the song.

  • @MrToranja where did he missed any note?

  • @TheDarkbite

At about 1:06, he fretted a note too hard and at 2:07 he hit a clunker, but he's human, and it's still a brilliant song. :)

The two greatest things to come out of Texas: SRV and Eric Johnson.

  • @CanItAlready at 1:06 was a chromatic move. not a mistake =]

at 2:07 I agree he missed it.

    but still its awesome ><

  • @MrToranja this is true,hes awesome!

  • he really miss that note!! this isn't a normal eric!! i think he's too nervous..but with these mistakes, you guys now realize how perfect eric has been..

  • @richardwu0609 Lol he did mess up badly several times. I know he improvised... but he messed up on the improv. A bad note is a bad note... and you can cleary hear it.

  • of course i can clearly hear the bad note, but people make mistakes sometimes even a guitar master like eric.what i try to say is put more concentrations on his muscial stuff rather than the bad note,or you will never enjoy the music

  • an artist can get boreed of there songs so they impovise

  • @REECEAVA very true...

  • have u idiots maybe thought u no HE TRIED TO IMPROVISE???

  • thats not what people mean by missing notes lol. i know he's improvising. there were some obvious slip ups which is rare with eric.

  • i know i'd be nervous to be on the tonight show

  • the thing about eric is that even on bad days, hes amazing. sure he missed some notes but who doesnt. everyone has off days.

  • he didntt miss one note... ??

  • sure he did. there are some slip ups here but he just plays through as if nothing happened.

  • he spoiled it : /

  • creo k lo pudo hacer mejor...

  • humust be drunk or high or something cause he is messin up in some places , usually u cant even tell wen he messes up (1:04, 1:29 , 2:04) but messing up is okay because we ALL do it......rite!!

  • I imagine the pressure of playing in front of millions of viewers that don't know him from Adam, made it a bit hard to be as fluid as he might be in front of a small intimate gathering of a few thousand of his adoring fans, like he's used to. I thought he pulled it off pretty well-though not his best performance. Check out John McLaughlin on Johnny Carson's tonight show if you want to see grace under pressure-cool as a cucumber, and rips through Cherokee-at the end you hear Johnny yell "WOW!"

  • hate to say it, but i dont think this was a very good performance at all. Oh well. Only bad performance I've ever seen Eric do.

  • Meaning: It's not phenomenally outstanding, per usual, but 'merely' very good. One tend to get spoiled by Eric's otherwise spelndid performances so should he not be to par with his usual self it annoys us as much as it does him.

  • Love this album~

  • he did not complete it coz it needs to be short for the leno show

  • Stupid!!! he never misses a note!!! He really doing it in that way.. As you observe him in his every performance he's taking off some of the best parts of his compositions.. Not only him but most of guitarists.. and on this early age this are the times when Cliffs of Dover is not complete yet..

  • quickknight24 said, "and on this early age this are the times when Cliffs of Dover is not complete yet."

No offense, but huh? This was done in 1991, and he'd been playing this song since 1984 (and probably earlier). And he recorded it on the album Jay mentions at the beginning. What do you mean it's "not complete yet"?

And yes, he did miss a number of notes in this performance. He was flat quite a few times. Probably nervous being on the Jay Leno show (I would be, wouldn't you?).

  • wow!!! EJ rocks!!!

  • does it matter? can u play like tht?, so wht if he missed abit of notes and pls tell me how he can keep up with his band m8's at tht speed of guitar picking....

  • You Failed. Completed 78% on Expert. ***
