I think CAT is perfect too :) but I never try bonepro . How about it ? I heard that it suit for low-res skinning like game . But how about high_res skin for movies ? Do you think it's better than skin moddifier ?
Can you model in mudbox and bring the model into maya for animation? Can you render your character in poses in Mudbox? Im very new to this, thank you :)
@d1v4dPwnz you can pose your model in mudbox (tutorial aviable on autodesk site). if u wanna import it in maya, its a diferent story. you'll have to go through the normal/disp...maps generation to apply it to a lower res model. obviously a million polys model cannot be animated in any way.
@Gron2003 its default weighting only to test how good / bad it would turn out. No extra weghing at all so people got an idea of what the starting weights are like. (Which I assumed I'd made clear in the info with the video).
did u take a class or did u learn on ur own? Cause I got the trail and want to be good at it. But just for fun. I want to get the program but don't want to have to go to fine art school to learn this.
I too HATE rigging/animating in 3ds max. Unfortunately, I don't have the CAT plugin (and can't aford to upgrade to max 2011, i'm using max 8), I'm also not very good with texturing. :p pretty much the only things I CAN do are modeling and materials, and to a lesser extent, lighting. Particles, cloth, haif/fur, rigging/animating...nadda. :p
I dont understand it at all i created the CAT Rig and it fitted inside the character i used Bones Pro and it didnt work at all :s shame theres like crap all on CAT and BonesPro tutorials. nice stuff anywho.
Not bad for default skinning. Certainly better than Maya's default skinning. The CAT rigs are nice and Bones Pro is much faster at skin sliding objects than Maya Muscle. I was recently using the new Envelopes in Maya 2011 for my work, but later ditched them in favor of brush skinning manually. I've done so many professional skin jobs at this point that I'm faster doing it that way anyways.
@okokira Biped is similar, but older. It's from the Character Studio days. Cat's got a lot more modularity in creating the specific rigs you want, also, you can transfer animation easier between rigs.
@okokira They are both easy because they don't require any manual rigging, they are pre-set rigs all ready for animation, you just adjust proportions, etc. You'll still have to skin them and I recommend learning brush weight-painting over just regular envelope weighting, as envelopes will only get y ou so far with the deformations.
CAT is awsome I've been using it since it came out, got me through some scary times at work. The presets it comes with are easy to tweak, but the best is how great it handles motion capture. You can reverse and blend animations way better than biped. I hate rigging too so I fell in love with CAT when it came out for max 2009. I gotta start posting my stuff lol. I'm loving the new mudbox to! Posing is great!
ive been using cat for a while on 2010, glad to hear its implemented into 2011, its a brilliant peice of kit and is much easier to use than the horrible bipeds of max. so you had no setup whatsoever here? wow, did u use physique or skin?

@MaMastoast 'Characetr Animation Tolkit' that was previously a subscriber only plugin and before that Softimage plugin etc etc etc...enables you to set up a rig fast. Bones Pro is a pay plugin for skinning that does a far better job that maxs built in one.
very good for quick rig but be carefull of the stretchy thumb and fingers they are getting weights from the thigh bone simple fix :) cat is a amazing little tool
@liquidbear well I as I mentioned in the info I wanted to see what the absolute default no tweaked version would produce (usualy using max skin it requires one helluva clean up). Although cleaning up the weights in bones pro would probably only take about 20 mins or so max.
he walks abnormally o_O
