I believe this is as good as it ever got..... Is there anything out there that can top Clapton & Allman at their respective peaks playing on the same sone? Not sure anything in rock & roll was ever made that was better than this.
Great song! Clapton as the emergent song writer. One thing I really like about him, and it still applies to this day: he's very unselfish about sharing the stage/spotlight with other musicains.
truth the Derek and the Dominos in concert album had eric bobby whitlock carl radle and jim gordon and it is the very best that Clapton ever did in his life--no allman was around at all.
I think this album is Clapton at his best, and Duane as well. In his autobiography, which is an amazing book, Clapton describes this period in his life as a very sad, dark one in which he sinks into isolation and heroine. Ironically, this is the most emotionally present album I've heard from any artist in the last 5 decades. Soul mainlined into the song!
@Dougiewoug Jim Gordon was amazing. If you look at the records he played on just during this period '69-'72, it's a list of the some of the most important records of the period: "All Things Must Pass". "Layla", "Apostrophe", "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys," "Traffic-Live at the Canteen." Too many to list here. His loss to the music world is unmeasurable. I saw him perform several times and he was ALWAYS flat out brilliant. Clapton wasn't just saying it.
@candelise As far as I know, Jim is still alive serving his sentence in Atascadero or some other CA. prison facility. I have tried to contact him but was turned down because I am not family.
@skimmel100 Technically, I believe some guitarists come close or equal Duane on slide. What makes him stand out beyond all others is his inventiveness. In this song, the guitar accompaniment and counterpoint to the melody is absolutely beautiful, whoever's playing it, and I'm sure Duane had a lot to do with it's creation.
@ELDestinova I agree with your comment.Johnny Winter,Bonnie Raitt, and the prodigy Derek Trucks are all inovative, but where would their styles be without his supreme dominance ??Rock on Duane!!!
This song just totally kicks ass!I easily put this album in my top 5 of all time.Just think of the music they could of come out with had Duane had't died
@lewars1912 eric's on slide while Duane play in standard. Eric's in either open G or Open A for this one. You can tell it's him as the slide sounds like more of a strat-ish tone, while the reguler lead parts sound fatter, like with an LP. But who knows, there could be over dub's on this track. I'm not exactly sure which tracks Duane did the overdub's on though.
@lewars1912 Listen carefully, you hear two slide guitars playing off each other. Dwayne's is the heavy distinct guitar and obviously it is Dwayne. The other is Eric feeding off Dwayne. @Katmido302 In the Derek and the Dominoes twentieth anniversary they have copies of the actual songs for the sound man and who is on which track etc... It is all in the box set. These were photocopies of the original soundman's track sheet. You can even see it!!
@lewars1912 Agree! I have researched this extensively. Duane was almost all the slide. His slide had Clapton in awe. I think this is the most passionate cut on the album and in my opinion, the best cut on Layla.
@lewars1912 Agree! I have researched this extensively. Duane was almost all the slide. His slide had Clapton in awe. I think this is the most passionate cut on the album and in my opinion, the best cut on Layla. Clapton is lead and Duane is wailing away.
one of the best comments on this album I ever heard , came from Bob Greenly later founder of King Snake Records an what you would call an Indie FL. label I guess from the Daytona area , when Duane came back from S.FL. Miami Criterion recording this album he told the assembled peeps that Damn i made Clapton jump!! I got him some!..and Bob Greenly said ..Well why do you think he asked you in the first place ?...... Just a little bit of Daytona trivia from the day as I heard it ... enjoy!!
Definitely is Clapton soloing here. This is a fierce tour du force by two players at the pinnacle of their playing power. It's a miracle that this song alone was captured and masterfully engineered by the Oracle of Recording Engineers Tom Dowd. One of my favorite songs of all time. It must be one of Clapton's as well as he still is playing it live these days with Derek Trucks when they are together. Tom Dowd brought these two guys together for the Layla sessions. God bless Tom Dowd.
@maggi711993- I'm pretty sure it's Duane on the solo-- sounds like his Les Paul. Also, that guitar transitions into the slide part Duane plays. If you want to hear longer solo by Duane, check out "Why Does Love Got To Be So Bad"- AWESOME!
Eric and Patty did not last long but his friendship to George lasted a lifetime .In my opinion this is the best album that Eric and Duane ever put out. Filmore east is close for Duane.
jim gordon wrote the last part. clapton and guys heard him playing it in the studio one day and asked for him to include it on layla. duane allman wrote the main guitar riff of layla.

please be real what did duane die 40 years ago derrik has copied duanes licks on all old songs and could never duplicate them where would duane be now artistically if alive way above the rest
@fed1126 first off, i gave my honest opinion that didn't disrespect anyone. secondly, derek takes such a more indian/worldly music approach to his slide playing. i'm pretty sure his style and duane's are very different.
@punkdude543 and others...Ringo (or George) and Eric both loved the same woman, I think her name was Barbara Bach ( kind of looked like Raquel Welch). Legend has it Layla is about her.........
Eric is just as good clean and sober and that is SCARY, gentlemen.
@TheLieselVontrapp Her name was Pattie Harrison (nee Boyd) and as the name suggests, she was George's wife, until Eric finally won her over. They were married in the late 70's (check me on that). Wonderful Tonight is a song written sarcastically about a night they went to a party. (Go figure). They have been divorced since the 80's. Eric and George repaired their relationship and were very close until George's death.
@johnhwclarke Cool! Thanks for clarifying, rather than laughing at. My uncle, rest his soul, had told me this when I was very little. So the memory was a little fuzzy on which Beatle it was. I am pretty sure they all were "swingers" anyway. Now, "Wonderful Tonight" - sarcastic? Burst my bubble. I always thought it was nice and a little bittersweet 'cause she has to always drive him home , and he passes out before they can be intimate. (Been there with my long blonde hair)!
@TheLieselVontrapp It was Clapton and George and her name was Patty, she was married to George and then they divorced and she married Clapton and that didn't work out either. That's who Layla was written about.
@TheLieselVontrapp Pattie Boyd i think. Pattie somthing. And I think it was Clapton and George. George wrote a real badass song for her too I think. I can't remember what one.
@TheLieselVontrapp you’re way off I'm afraid.....it is about Eric's unrequited love for Patti Boyd; several of the Derek and the Domino album tracks are about her when she was still with George Harrison.
@TheLieselVontrapp Georges wife (they met on the set of A Hard Days Night) Patty Boyd was who Clapton wrote Layla for -- she and Harrison split, and her and Clapton married -- she is also the inspiration for Something by Harrison, Bell Bottom Blues, and You Look Wonderful Tonight by Clapton --- use google
@TheLieselVontrapp wow that was Patty Harrison who was married to George and left him for Eric...Layla has nothing to do with her although a song or two on the album does such as Have you ever loved a woman ...just thought you might like to know
Uh, "Layla" was written for Pattie. "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" was a cover that neatly fit Eric's own situation. He dedicated the entire album to her.
The story goes the rest of the group heard Gordon working on a song that ended up being the slow part to Layla. They convinced him to let them use it for the album. Dowd's recording engineers kept good logs and they were able to match the Gordon slow part to the original recording of Layla that had already been done weeks earlier. They spliced them together and the rest is history:)
@peredrum. I saw you playing with Tim Bogart (from Vanilla Fudge & Jeff Beck Bands) and Jay Williams(Guitarist for Gary Wright Band) in L.A. years ago. You guys were great, and you are an awesome drummer. Thanks for the inside on Layla.
@peredrum Jim Gordon actually wrote the piano part as well. Then he went scitzo and killed his mother. What a shame!! Great drummer -- played with Steely Dan and Beach boys and a host of others. Apparently the hottest studio drummer in LA at the time. I read an article where he was doing twenty yrs in jail. Paranoid Schitzophrania -- Sp?
I do think though that this version beats the DT version by a lot. I personally wish Trucks would stop doing soo many tunes Duane did because he's excellent in his own right but I just don't hear the aggression in his playing that I heard sometimes in Duane.
You know, I'm a big Duane Allman fan, and I think that he's one of the most impressive musicians rock ever had because he could really take you places during a great solo the way some of the great jazz musicians could, but I wouldn't say Trucks "pales" in comparison. Not as good, at least for now, I agree, but I for one am really impressed with his phrasing and soulfulness (and chops!!! Good lord!). Also I think they have very different voices on the guitar so the comparison may be unwarranted
Yeah, good point! It's not like Trucks sucks or anything. I just think Duane was from another planet when it came to his soul and phrasing. I play guitar myself and wouldn't if I never heard Duane but Trucks is good too.
@evanguy close enough :p ... derek & the dominos were from 1970 to 1971 and Exile was recorded in 1971 Nellcote, and released in 72. its close my brother, close enough for me :)...i sure hope heaven has a time machine....
Actually, Jim Gordon wrote the piano outro on the song Layla and played it on the album. It was not originally written for the song, but Clapton heard him playing it one day and thought it would be a perfect addition to the song.
As a session player in L.A. in the 70's I met Jimmy Gordon and the guys in Derek & the Domino's at a session date I did for Delaney and Bonnie. My close friend,Jeff Pocaro introduced me to them. You're correct about Jimmy G. playing the piano on Layla. Not to many people know that
It took a while for this sound to get accepted. The single "Layla" was re-released in May of 1972 and that is when people actually started to listen to it.
I got use to walking into parties with the album and blowing everyone away with it's greatness in 1972.
They had not heard anything like it.
By Sept 1973 "Bros and Sisters " by the Allman's was playing from every dorm room window.
npspec34, I recall the sound being too much for people at first. I think some of it has to do with Clapton's seriousness. I saw footage of him rehearsing a band; it looked like they were in school with the toughest teacher they'd ever known - no talking in the back! But Clapton, as we know, is hardest on himself. Mayall described his guitar playing as "angry." I hear it throughout this album (along with the heartbreak). But it's that uncompomising nature that gets him close to perfection.
@09Marcelm Outstanding yes but I have to say that this performance is unmatched. Two of the most brilliant guitarists of their generation on the same album is damn hard to match....
this album is maybe one of the best rock albums ever made - almost amazing when you think of Allmans and Clapton and gang together.... LOVE this song!
for all you Allman fans my favorite is Idlewild south and of course the best live recording of all time Live at the Fillmore..of course that's just my opinion.
I'm forever gratefull I grew up when this music was new. Music was written and played to reach your very soul. So many great players. Thank you Mega Tronn for your post You give me hope for the young ones out their Your heart and ears are in the right place. Carry on
Because this music is timeless and the rest of this tepid drivel released today are only trends that come and go. This is real music from the heart. Today it's about nothing but showmanship, gimmicks, dancing and underdressed whores flashing everybody. I'm a young guy and I listen to Clapton, Hendrix, Miles Davis, Van Halen and Mahavishnu Orchestra to name a few. Trust me friend, very few of us kids are alright. lol;
Perhaps best slide player ever, but Derek Trucks is hot on his heals now.

@tufjag and the rest of the group: So there was a Barbara Bach and Ringo thing.
I knew I had heard that somewhere...

@TheLieselVontrapp Pattie Boyd i think. Pattie somthing. And I think it was Clapton and George. George wrote a real badass song for her too I think. I can't remember what one.
JimmyPage97 1 year ago
@TheLieselVontrapp you’re way off I'm afraid.....it is about Eric's unrequited love for Patti Boyd; several of the Derek and the Domino album tracks are about her when she was still with George Harrison.
clean3 1 year ago
@TheLieselVontrapp Georges wife (they met on the set of A Hard Days Night) Patty Boyd was who Clapton wrote Layla for -- she and Harrison split, and her and Clapton married -- she is also the inspiration for Something by Harrison, Bell Bottom Blues, and You Look Wonderful Tonight by Clapton --- use google
smffeb58 1 year ago
@TheLieselVontrapp wow that was Patty Harrison who was married to George and left him for Eric...Layla has nothing to do with her although a song or two on the album does such as Have you ever loved a woman ...just thought you might like to know
sonnyfiftyeight 1 year ago
@sonnyfiftyeight
Uh, "Layla" was written for Pattie. "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" was a cover that neatly fit Eric's own situation. He dedicated the entire album to her.
evanguy 1 year ago
@sonnyfiftyeight lol obviously layla was written for patty its the greatest tale of unrequited love ever

@fed1126 I don't think Clapton copied anything Duane did - Duane played good slide guitar- Clapton walks the neck.
Hell were would Hendrix be today.Guess all six string players would be praying to him Ha Ha.

This is one of my favorite DADs songs! I just wish the guitar solo in the middle was longer.
bulstrode100 1 year ago
The story goes the rest of the group heard Gordon working on a song that ended up being the slow part to Layla. They convinced him to let them use it for the album. Dowd's recording engineers kept good logs and they were able to match the Gordon slow part to the original recording of Layla that had already been done weeks earlier. They spliced them together and the rest is history:)

Jimmy Gordon the drummer actually played the piano on Layla.
Bobby Whitlock did not,

@peredrum. I saw you playing with Tim Bogart (from Vanilla Fudge & Jeff Beck Bands) and Jay Williams(Guitarist for Gary Wright Band) in L.A. years ago. You guys were great, and you are an awesome drummer. Thanks for the inside on Layla.
lapspd 2 years ago 13
@peredrum Jim Gordon actually wrote the piano part as well. Then he went scitzo and killed his mother. What a shame!! Great drummer -- played with Steely Dan and Beach boys and a host of others. Apparently the hottest studio drummer in LA at the time. I read an article where he was doing twenty yrs in jail. Paranoid Schitzophrania -- Sp?

I do think though that this version beats the DT version by a lot. I personally wish Trucks would stop doing soo many tunes Duane did because he's excellent in his own right but I just don't hear the aggression in his playing that I heard sometimes in Duane.
alreadywoundpie 2 years ago
I'm so sorry, but Derek Trucks pales in comparison to the amazing Duane Allman,.
usethegrenade 2 years ago
You know, I'm a big Duane Allman fan, and I think that he's one of the most impressive musicians rock ever had because he could really take you places during a great solo the way some of the great jazz musicians could, but I wouldn't say Trucks "pales" in comparison. Not as good, at least for now, I agree, but I for one am really impressed with his phrasing and soulfulness (and chops!!! Good lord!). Also I think they have very different voices on the guitar so the comparison may be unwarranted
alreadywoundpie 2 years ago
Yeah, good point! It's not like Trucks sucks or anything. I just think Duane was from another planet when it came to his soul and phrasing. I play guitar myself and wouldn't if I never heard Duane but Trucks is good too.
usethegrenade 2 years ago
@alreadywoundpie I couln't agree more. Well done in your response.
Thanks.

@Mrveendam This studio album of Derek and the Dominoes came out in 1970

Actually, Jim Gordon wrote the piano outro on the song Layla and played it on the album. It was not originally written for the song, but Clapton heard him playing it one day and thought it would be a perfect addition to the song.
greazychicken 2 years ago
As a session player in L.A. in the 70's I met Jimmy Gordon and the guys in Derek & the Domino's at a session date I did for Delaney and Bonnie. My close friend,Jeff Pocaro introduced me to them. You're correct about Jimmy G. playing the piano on Layla. Not to many people know that
Jimmy was an exceptionasl pianist.

This song flat out rocks. What a mega talented group this was. All hail youtube. It's like having my old milk crates of records back.

But D & D is the nuts for ever and always.
npspec34 2 years ago
npspec34, I recall the sound being too much for people at first.

And the Susan Tedechi & Derek Trucks version is great too.

Catch Clapton singing with them at the beginning while he watches :-) sweet moment and great version.

@09Marcelm Outstanding yes but I have to say that this performance is unmatched. Two of the most brilliant guitarists of their generation on the same album is damn hard to match....

This stuff sounds better than most "new"
music. I don't know why.
tallorder9 2 years ago 2
Because this music is timeless and the rest of this tepid drivel released today are only trends that come and go. This is real music from the heart. Today it's about nothing but showmanship, gimmicks, dancing and underdressed whores flashing everybody. I'm a young guy and I listen to Clapton, Hendrix, Miles Davis, Van Halen and Mahavishnu Orchestra to name a few. Trust me friend, very few of us kids are alright. lol;
