I got chills at 1:26, 1:54, 2:02, 2:30, 2:38, 2:41, 2:47, and 4:05 with some mini-chills in between. Absolutely love this piece. I'm playing 1st horn on this for our concert music at MCHS, GA and the chords in the horns alone that we hit are beautiful. Now we just need "Abram's Pursuit" to sound this good xD
Playing this for Regional Band. Hopefully I'll be able to get 1st chair on Bass Clarinet and play the ending with the clarinet and flute. Luckily I've already played this piece, and that part prior to regions :O
For the song itself, probably one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever played. :'3 <3
We are currently working on this piece for our upcoming concert. The least I can is that this song is absolutely beautiful! I do agree with several people that it is played too quickly. This song needs to hang onto the amazing chords that are found within it. I can't wait until we perfect this song in our band, it will be amazing!
I am currently playing this in honors band. It is an amazing piece. So simple and yet when I close my eyes I can see the sun setting. One of the best pieces I have ever played so far.
I played this my senior year in high school at the last concert and played the clarinet part at the end, best moment of my life, I have never felt so much emotion playing a piece of music.
Not my favorite piece to play but one of the best. I performed this both my sophomore year and my junior year of high school. This piece was also one of the recordings that got my high school band into GMEA this year. Someone put our performance on youtube so go listen to it and post your comments. Our high school name is Newnan and our band is the Symphonic Winds.
2010 MMEA All state. Piece 3. My favorite piece ever played at All state that year. I looked at it and i was kinda like "meh" first rehearsal, I had chills. During the performance, I cried during the climax, so pure and beautiful -3
@devoncifuni Yessss!!! :D that was so fun to play! I loved the last movement! :D it was rather interesting yet, It sounded so much more 1600's then the first two in my opinion :D
I just came across this today - amazing to read all your kind comments about Dusk! BTW, I don't know which recording this is, but it's a bit too fast (especially at the climax) - I like for the piece to remain very slow throughout (q=48 or so). Just FYI for the next time you play - if the director is going too fast, tell him or her. ;)
Hope everyone has a great day and keeps making music!
I played this in Indianapolis Wind Ensemble a few years back, and this song was one of my favorites. It looks easy on paper, but it's gorgeous! I'd pay my band director to be able to play it again...
We were going over the chords in my Symphonic Band class, and at one point in the song, I'm not remembering where, there are two major chords played a whole step apart. I think it's a Db Major and an Eb Major, but i could be wrong. It's so cool!!!! :D
We're playing this for a concert and today when we listened to a recording of it in class I had to keep myself from crying.. It sounds corny but the beauty almost made me cry
@TacoJuiceMcWhatFace I played this song this year at all region and I'm a sophmore too! Haha! It's actually my favorite band song ever! I spent all weekend trying to find it and another girl told me that the name was "Dusk" not "Dawn" which is what I was searching for, hahaha!
I had the honor of working with Mr. Bryant in performing this piece... you could really connect with his passion, it was one of my greatest musical memories. :D
You really have to be emotionally involved with this piece to play it the way it was meant to be played. I definitely was, not many of the other people in my band were. :/ Still love this piece.
If you like this piece, you should listen to "First Light." Steven Bryant does so much with tone color in all of his pieces that your ears have to be well in tune with pitch (no pun intended).
The first time I played this song I was so excited just from read the sheet music. I play french horn and I could tell that this is definitely a horn piece. The chords are beautifully blended and harmonized. So simple yet it sends chills up my spine everytime i hear it... Steven Bryant is the 2nd coming of Christ. :)
i played this in my all state band... and it was honestly the first time ive ever gotten chills while rehersing a piece. this is one of my favorite songs and truely is one of the most gorgeous pieces written. oh and i got to meet steven bryant. :)
Just played this at the NC All-State 9-10 High School band concert. Awesome piece. And Steven Bryant lives in Durham, so he came and told us all these nice things and fixed it up nice 'n good. Happy face =)
Steven Bryant is awesome! This piece is wonderful! Two years ago, he brought his piece, "First Light," to an Arkansas Composer's Symposium, and he is not only a fantastic composer, but also a fantastic person!
i am at the moment playing this piece for band and being an oboe player i have a lot of rest time to hear the piece and i swear to got every time we play this piece it just give me goosebumps
My high school band is playing this for a competition. It proves to be a difficult piece, what with all the emotion involved. Also, we're playing it about half as fast as this version.
We played this amazing, wonderful piece just before performing the world premiere of the Zeppeling Sinfonie by Thomas Doss on the November 11th, 2008, composed for the 100th anniversary of the Zeppelin - Stiftung (Zeppelin Foundation) and our Orchestra: Stadtorchester Friedrichshafen (City Orchestra Friedrichshafen).
Almost got the chance to play this at a regional honors band festival a few years back, but I didn't get a high enough chair in the euphonium section to qualify for the wind ensemble...
Hopefully, I'll get another opportunity to perform this piece. It's nothing short of beautiful.
