Toward the end of 06/07, he proved that when he's on his game, he's capable of playing at the very top level.
Look at the CL semi-final against Chelsea where he repeatedly left Ashley Cole chasing shadows, or the final vs Milan (and in direct opposition to the legendary Maldini), where he alongside Mascherano were arguably the Men of the Match.
Unfortunately he could never produce that kind of form on a consistent basis.
