@shonajw We all have the tendency to criticize the US from time to time some of it for legitimate reasons. I have done it and you are doing it now. Your point is correct however but we still needed them to win that war mainly because of their mass production of weapons capability and the shear number of troops they were able to provide. They did not win the war on their own they need us as much as we needed them.

@shonajw I agree with you to a point. However maybe you should consider what we did to countries like Czechoslovakia in order to appease the Nazis and prevent a war. Everyone at that time was tired of war and we ignored warnings from men like Churchill by giving into the Nazis on all their demands right up till they attacked Poland. @shonajw America did help long before the Japanese attacked us. There were many American flyers helping during the BoB, the US gave the Brits 50 destroyers, many aircraft and other supplies.
@Toddinfantry To be fair, while US lend-lease was invaluable to the war effort, they did not "give" destroyers' to the Brits. They were given in return for leases on bases in Bermuda and Newfoundland. Also, the UK continued to repay her war debts to the USA (and Canada)until 5 or 6 years ago.

@cf80to01 True, but more importantly, they get "facts" from those who are trying to revise the history. It will be a battle for a long time to flush this kind of crap out. History happens one way with many observers that remember differently and so it is interpreted differently then. It is the job of historians and military authors to combine the research and give us a fairly good record of events. That and actual unit records make a complete picture of events that must be treated with care.

It is interesting, with the fall of the iron curtain and the release of Enigma decripts how many WW2 battles must be seen in a new light. For example, when the Canadians/Poles were slow to close the Falaise gap and the insinuations made by Monty, Patton, Bradly, etc. .
my uncles landed on the beaches of Normandy, Joe Flores, Nestor Flores, Rudy Rivera....all mexican-american boys from Los Angeles California.....Uncle Rudy was gravely wounded by german machine gun fire , later in France, my Uncle Joe was critically wounded in his sherman tank...and on April 1st, 1945, my uncle Nestor Flores was killed in action assaulting Paderborn, Germany....thank you my brave uncles for your sacrifice for all of us younger ones....and the freedom you gave to Europe.
I was a military trumpet player for 13 years and one of my first times to play Taps was at Normandy. I can only imagine the hell those men went thru to take the beach but some years back was given some insight into it by my great-grandfather who landed at Omaha. We owe these men everything and more. Let us never forget that.

At the end of the French campaign as we neared the German border we ran out of gasoline/petrol/fuel, even though we used every bit of all the captured German fuel. You see, all the troops, equipment, supplies including fuel had to come from across the seas. If the fuel had been in sufficient quantity we would have moved into Germany much sooner, but Shitler got a break & was able to rebuild his western forces quickly due to the excellent German troop replacement system & interior lines.

As the French Campaign progressed the Geramns sent much more to the West Front until by the end of the war ~40% of German ground forces were in the West. Germans surprised us in the Ardennes as that was where we had only 6 Divs resting & reinforcing, Germans attacked with much greater force & one of the heaviest concentrations of Arty. used in WWII. However, initial German surpise didn;t last long.

An uncle of mine was with the 9th AD at St. Vith in the Bulge, Remagen etc., step dad in the pacific drving LCI's, etc. We can't forget those that died & were wounded & maimed for our freedom. He (they) fought a losing battle for a lost cause. If any are still living, you should record or write down their recollections, for the sake of history. Veterans from all the at-war countries are dying by the hundreds every day. Most are 80+. We must preserve their stories, regardless of who they fought for.
My two grandfathers fought for the Wehrmacht (no SS thank god) and both are still alive. One was a tank commander fighting at Kursk in a PzIV Battalion (as far as i know from my dad who told me because i never knew that grandfather) and the other grandfather fought in a FlaK-Battalion in Germany but he never really saw the enemy because british bombers destroyed their fueldepo with a trick (Freja-System). the reason for japan attacking the U.S. is because after they expanded due to the need of raw materials for their booming industrial economy they invaded colonies of the European Union which was the dutch east indies. When they figured they had already brought the allies into the war at that point due to our ties to europe. @shonajw I agree with you to a point. However maybe you should consider what we did to countries like Czechoslovakia in order to appease the Nazis and prevent a war. Everyone at that time was tired of war and we ignored warnings from men like Churchill by giving into the Nazis on all their demands right up till they attacked Poland. Everyone was hoping it would all go away and it didn't. I am not sticking up for the Yanks just saying I can see their view point to a certain extent.

@shonajw America did help long before the Japanese attacked us. There were many American flyers helping during the BoB, the US gave the Brits 50 destroyers, many aircraft and other supplies.

@Toddinfantry To be fair, while US lend-lease was invaluable to the war effort, they did not "give" destroyers' to the Brits. They were given in return for leases on bases in Bermuda and Newfoundland. Also, the UK continued to repay her war debts to the USA (and Canada)until 5 or 6 years ago.

@cf80to01 True, but more importantly, they get "facts" from those who are trying to revise the history. It will be a battle for a long time to flush this kind of crap out. History happens one way with many observers that remember differently and so it is interpreted differently then. It is the job of historians and military authors to combine the research and give us a fairly good record of events. That and actual unit records make a complete picture of events that must be treated with care.

It is interesting, with the fall of the iron curtain and the release of Enigma decripts how many WW2 battles must be seen in a new light. For example, when the Canadians/Poles were slow to close the Falaise gap and the insinuations made by Monty, Patton, Bradly, etc. .

my uncles landed on the beaches of Normandy, Joe Flores, Nestor Flores, Rudy Rivera....all mexican-american boys from Los Angeles California.....Uncle Rudy was gravely wounded by german machine gun fire , later in France, my Uncle Joe was critically wounded in his sherman tank...and on April 1st, 1945, my uncle Nestor Flores was killed in action assaulting Paderborn, Germany....thank you my brave uncles for your sacrifice for all of us younger ones....and the freedom you gave to Europe.

I was a military trumpet player for 13 years and one of my first times to play Taps was at Normandy. I can only imagine the hell those men went thru to take the beach but some years back was given some insight into it by my great-grandfather who landed at Omaha. We owe these men everything and more. At the end of the French campaign as we neared the German border we ran out of gasoline/petrol/fuel, even though we used every bit of all the captured German fuel. You see, all the troops, equipment, supplies including fuel had to come from across the seas. If the fuel had been in sufficient quantity we would have moved into Germany much sooner, but Shitler got a break & was able to rebuild his western forces quickly due to the excellent German troop replacement system & interior lines.

machierl, Germans used a lot of captured artillery, MGs, etc. & concerted SPGs. As the French Campaign progressed the Geramns sent much more to the West Front until by the end of the war ~40% of German ground forces were in the West. Germans surprised us in the Ardennes as that was where we had only 6 Divs resting & reinforcing, Germans attacked with much greater force & one of the heaviest concentrations of Arty. used in WWII. However, initial German surpise didn;t last long.

An uncle of mine was with the 9th AD at St. Vith in the Bulge, Remagen etc., step dad in the pacific drving LCI's, etc. We can't forget those that died & were wounded & maimed for our freedom. You cant blame the people of Sweden, Its was a decision by our government. Swedish volunteers fought with finland against the communists and many of them joined SS after. So some people actually showed some courage and stood up against the allied forces.

On the german side were 6000 casualties, 2200 of them by Omaha were 4000 US solders were killed or woulded.

He (they) fought a losing battle for a lost cause. If any are still living, you should record or write down their recollections, for the sake of history. Veterans from all the at-war countries are dying by the hundreds every day. Most are 80+. We must preserve their stories, regardless of who they fought for.

My two grandfathers fought for the Wehrmacht (no SS thank god) and both are still alive. One was a tank commander fighting at Kursk in a PzIV Battalion (as far as i know from my dad who told me because i never knew that grandfather) and the other grandfather fought in a FlaK-Battalion in Germany but he never really saw the enemy because british bombers destroyed their fueldepo with a trick (Freja-System). I would love to know more because its very interesting!

Not only Jews were killed, Japanese used Americans as target practice testing Artillary & gasses on them. Ameican Submarine salors shot at helpless Japanese sailors after they sunk their ships. Some of the young enemy salors were captured & raped because Salors had not been with women for long periods of time out at sea, this heppened on both sides, after salors were done they executed the prisiners & dumped them out the torpedo tubes or overbord. Most veteran salors will never admit 2 seeing it

the reason for japan attacking the U.S. is because after they expanded due to the need of raw materials for their booming industrial economy they invaded colonies of the European Union which was the dutch east indies. When they figured they had already brought the allies into the war at that point due to our ties to europe. This provoked them to deal as much of a retalitory blow on our soil before we jumped to the occasion and brought the war to them.

We did nothing to help? Before we were even in the war, we were Joining you guys as volunteers and sending the British much needed supplies, and we weren't even in the war yet! You are a moron. First of all nobody is claiming "We won the war" We couldn't without the russians. We did more on the western front than anyone else. Including giving supplIes to britain. we were at war with germany before pearl harbor. WIth the shoot on site order. ALso Omaha beach was the bloodiest landing on d-day with 3000 casualties, out of the nearly 5000 that day.
