The church guy was inside his safe room when his friend ( unknown name ) wanted to get inside. Unbeknowst to the church guy, his friend, was infected! He was not a zombie when he entered (though he was infected, he hadn't turned yet) and he bit the church guy. The church guy thought he was immune, but he wasn't. The strain of the infection heavily mutated him into a boomer, smoker, or hunter. (Info from L4D wiki)

That's right. Though Church Guy (let's call him Churchy) didn't know the person he helped was infected. And Special Infected are the result of the virus mutating in certain people. Churchy was unlucky enough to be one of those people.

This is my guess anyway. Valve never answered these sort of questions as far as I know, so it's all up to our imaginations.

so now he thought he was immune but he was parinoid and says better safe than sorry and he rang the bell as a test to the team to see if they were infected and when the horde was done he had turned into infected
