The problem is that Steiner is trying to be like Wagner by streaming this music throughout the movie at all time. Yeah some of it is good and appropriate but at other times, the music was just an annoyance especially near the beginning of the movie. I feel the same way about John Williams in the Star War prequels. Even Wagner had brief pauses and he was writing opera not a movie!
Who says kids don't like anything old? I'm an 18 year old media student and think this piece of music is absolutely stunning and somewhat breathtaking! Maybe it's because I actually appreciate films from the past, I don't know, but at least I do!
As good as it gets. Lots of money but all wisely spent on the best script, actors and sets. Burning of Atlanta was so frightful, the railroad tracks covered by thousands of wounded soldiers was sickening but real.
Max Steiner was indeed nominated for his score for the film...but lost the Oscar to Herbert Stothart for "The Wizard Of Oz", one of the other "great films" of 1939.
There were five screenwriters involved with the film (four uncredited)- but the one who shaped the script the most was producer David O. Selznick himself.
I've seen this masterpiece many times starting in 1940 and am presently re reading the novel. Writing GWTW for the screen was a masterwork. Because of its complexity it demanded that some characters be cut from the script and it was done with much love and finesse. The casting was perfect as was everything else about it.. The best if the best.
I do agree that the Wizard of Oz deserves the "Best Song" award they won (for Somewhere Over the Rainbow), but they definatley stole the "Best Score" award from Gone With the Wind.
@zazapk9 Max Steiner indeed. He did win a few academy awards though. Sadly enough not for Gone with the Wind, probabaly his best known score nowadays.
This movie will always be the greatest movie of all time. No one can remake this movie! It just wouldnt be the same!
I remember the first time I ever watched this movie, my g.mother yelled at my dad because I was named after Scarlett, and I had never seen it, and they always called me Scarlett O'Hara. I finally asked why they called me it, and we went home and me and my daddy watched it together, and I fell in love with it!

Wonderful depth, I can hear the separate instruments, the bass and there's even a harp in there! All combined they make an immortal melody greater than was heard by the original audiences'.
Classic movie. Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia De Haviland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel and the rest of the cast of this epic film were perfect. SHOULD NOT BE REMADE. Coming to DVD & Blu-Ray in a 70th Anniversary Utimate Collector's Edition November 17, 2009.
you're welcome. "Gone With The Wind" is also one of my favourite movies. Drama, war, passion, revenge. what more could you ask for in a sweeping spectacle? very good movie.
@ShakespeareHamlet definitely SHOULD NOT be remade. It's an amazing movie to be made in 1939 withe the little technology that they had then about a great theme and no modern technology now or 1000 years from now coulddo it any better. Maybe i should read Maragret Mitchell's originall novel some day, cheers.
@ShakespeareHamlet your right some things just need to be left alone. and i love clark gable, hes definitly not hard on the eyes, and is a great actor.
This is not the actual soundtrack. It's a re-recording.

@wizardbase He won 3. But not for this theme. I think "Wizard of Oz" took score that year.
klausweasley 8 months ago
@wizardbase
Max Steiner. YES.
He's won at least 3 academy awards. Was nominated for 24. And was the first person to win the Golden Globe for best Musical Score.
And he wasn't the only author of the music for this film.
It was him, Hugo Friedhofer, Adolph Deutsch, Heinz Roemheld, and Joseph Nussbaum.

for me is "gone with the wind" the best movie of all time!! The book was moved relatively well and the mood of the past was caught really!!
one should not have made the continuation.
Nobody can as play "MAMY - SCARLET - RHETT - MELANIE - ASHLEY" etc. as the original occupation.
