This is brilliant but does not give justice to the live broadway productions when in the beginning he starts in his bedroom and throws his mattress. but awesome anyway…congrats to all the "Billy's"
i saw this musical in november last year. with this boy. and i can just say WOW i watched the other boys on youtube and they are good but tis boy is just so incredeable. no fear. i wish i could be so talented and have a chance like this!
@wickedObsessed22 they're riot police. billy's dad and brother are miners and the miners went on strike in 1984/5, and margaret thatcher sent the police in to basically batter anyone who tried to cause trouble - the people with the pieces of set, and the song 'Solidarity' is about the miners sticking together. Hope that makes things a bit clearer, it's probably on wikipedia aswell, so you can look on that aswell.
just saw this american idiot, next to normal and hair and this was my favorite, the boy who played billy was incredible i couldn't believe how well he could dance and the set was outstanding. If you go to broadway you have to see this.
When I was a kid, I thought dancing was just for women and if you did it as a guy, you were a pansy.......SOOOOOOO Glad to be proved I was wrong! Now I wanna tap and dance like this kid any day of the week! BAD ASS

@amazinggarret1 r u blind? The song is called angry dance because dancing is billy's life and now Its been taken away. He's screaming and grunting because of how frustrated he is. Nobody understands the electric feeling that pulses through his veins when he dances. It's a feeling you can't describe u have to experience it.
it was one of the most amazing shows i've ever seen...i would rate chorus line first then billy elliot...the boy i saw was the most amazing dancer i've ever seen in my life! AMAZING!

I don't know why they did "Angry Dance". It's one of the most pointless songs I've ever seen on Broadway, and the choreography didn't help matters any. The actor playing Billy doesn't look like he's angry -- he looks like he's dancing around the stage grunting.
@amazinggarrett1 I agree. I finally saw this show, and I'm confused by all the critical acclaim it got. Yes, the visuals are stunning and the performances are great ... but the score is unmemorable and the show has numerous problems. It's got nothing on Next to Normal.
OMG. So powerful, It made me cry. To think about this happening to someone like Michael Jackson. How terrible for any child to be deprived of creating art. Sad.
I am going to repeat a question that I've asked before. How do the Americans react to the social commentary in this show? It has a socialist message as well so I am amazed that the US have taken to it? Do you just ignore that aspect which is impossible as its an integral part of the story? I am curious not critical. By the way I love it, all of it!
@olesammie I can only speak for myself. I am against socialism, especially for my country (USA) but I do love this show. Good entertainment is good entertainment.
@olesammie Socialism is a very broad movement, it dosent have to be implemented authoritarian or at a federal/state level.
But as a local labor solidarity, cooperative or a syndicate, dosent have to be an anti-thesis to Americans liberal(as in classical, not the silly contemporary bromides that is being flung about today) values.
i just saw this on Broadway!!! oh my goodness!!! everyone on that stage had so much talent!!! it was fantastic!!! the dancing was incredible!! i couldn't believe Billy's dancing skills. It was so amazing!
In my opinion billy elliot is one of the best most touching musicals I have ever seen and I think it reaches out to audiences in a way that next to normal can't. I like next to normal but billy won this because it was in many peoples opinions the best musical! I think that the cast especially the billys and michaels are what makes the show and that just for that billy deserved the tony
There has not been one boy who played Billy that has not been very talented. Most do much more than just do tap and ballet. I wish I had as much talent as these young men.
@christineadorno Billy's father has just told him that he cannot go to ballet school, which he has been rehearsing to audition for over the last year. His father and older brother, who are miners, do not approve of his wanting to be a dancer and are also involved in the 1984 Miners' Strike. The strike was a response to the Conservative Government's threatening to close several coal pits and often involved picket-line violence between striking miners and the police.
@christineadorno (continued) Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher declares that the miners are "the wreckers in our midst" and that "they must not succeed" (at 2:56), so the police march into the village to intimidate/counter the miners and Billy gets caught up in the middle of it (hence the police with riot shields). There are many struggles for freedom here: the miners' freedom to work, Billy's freedom to dance, people's freedom to oppose government, government's freedom to oppose people, etc...
this musical had great choreography, decent script, and decent music, as well as decent talent.
still, next to normal, while it didnt have much dance, was a fantastic script, and had one of the best musical scores ive heard in a very VERY long time, and had 6 extremely talented cast members (there were only 6 members total)...

the actor's voices are good, but billy sounds like a little boy and the grandmother sound like a grandmother. it's realistic for them not to be Broadway belters!
if you look at the opening number video you will see that Trent is actually the one who opens everything! It was Trent who pretty much started the Tonys. He is in the spotlight in the beginning. Then david is added on, then kiril.
No, all three of them are in the dance at the beginning with spotlights on them. Kiril and David are on the main stage with Elton John, while Trent is on a side stage. The camera was on Trent in the beginning, but all three started at the same time. Kiril and David do the majority of the dance, and Trent is only brought back on at the end to do the bit with the harness.
This was being aired on national TV, and thus Trent Kowalik was not allowed to yell 4-letter invectives or perform with the full set. Sorry, but you cannot judge his performance unless you've actually seen him in the show. Even Daldry called him "the most genius tap dancer we've ever come across."

what i like about trent T. is that he doesn't act gay at all..he may be gay in real life, but compared with david and the other boy..trent appears just like a real boy with emotional conflicts.
My son and I love the "Angry Dance," but take a look at all the Billys in the 60th anniversary BAFTA. Doing an American version of this for the Tonys would have been wonderful.
At the Tonys, I believe it's traditional to only do numbers straight from the musical. Since the choreography is nominated, they wanted to only show what would appear in the show. I agree that the BAFTA dance was amazing, though.
my best friend is in this play and she said that the three amazingly talented billys had a TON of trouble learning this dance....but they sure did do it well!
I love Billy Elliot. I love Angry Dance. I FREAKIN' love Trent's Angry Dance.
But it wasn't really right for the Tony's.. :/
I heard they were originally gonna do a 4-minute version of Solidarity which would've been better - Showing of the amazing cast (spesh the Ballet Girls).
Oh, God I LOVE the Angry Dance-- but when you see it out of context of the show, it seems odd and slightly awkward because the whole First Act is a build up 2this song. U really have 2 "experience" BE 2 understand and fully appreciate the Angry Dance. Watching the entire show helps the number pack a bigger emotional punch. The COMPLETE Solidarity number would have been a fantastic choice for the Tonys. It's just more palatable a number for those who haven't seen the show or know much about BE.
completely agree. they were going to perform solidarity but the tony organisers made them change it only a few days before the tonys because it was too long. the angry dance is amazing, especially if you've seen the show and understand the context, but i can imagine it would be confuse to those who haven't seen BE.
What a shame! Solidarity is the more visually stunning number too. I think it would be great if they would just televise PERFORMANCES from Broadway shows. No awards necessary, just great entertainers coming together and performing a selection of songs from shows currently playing on Broadway; and maybe gather casts from past winners. It'd be a great coming together of Broadway performers.
I agree, Solidarity as a routine would have been spectacular at the Tonys but I think they would have struggled with all the bad language in that song. I mean how would they replace "when you were on the picket line, we went and fucked yer Mrs"....Too many F words in that song and to get rid of them all would have made it sound a bit silly. Certainly to those of us who have seen the show. But it is one of my fav numbers from the show.
not to mention, the choregraphy is altered because it's not their set, so it's a little watered down. I wish they'd done Solidarity too. I saw this performance before I'd seen the show and I had NO idea what was going on.
same here i didn't know what was happening but i loved the music for this song and the dance and thats what really got me interested in the show this is by far my favorite musical i have ever seen
his emoting is absolutely wonderful. he is an actor. a powerhouse performance for a 14 year old asked to do the most dramatic moment of the show on the spot for the Tony's. How hard is that?!?!?! Unbelievably moving and wonderful. Deserves the Tony.....
i agree. especially since there are THREE billys, not just this one, and there are others in the cast as well. also, this show is not just about dancing, theres much more to it
I agree. But the London cast only promoted Liam Mower as Billy-at least of the promos that I've seen. So at least the others get to perform at different events as well(:
Thriller Live is already playing in the Westend in London. Layton Williams ( who used to play Billy Elliot in the London show ) was one of the first boys to play the young Michael Jackson in Thriller Live.
i totaly get this story cause i grew up in the place that got hit and affected most in the uk and like 75% of the men in our family were miners at the time, i know that still today my family hate the Mets :P
oh por dios pero que energia de este pequeño actor y bailarin, apesar de que algunos de sus movimientos carecen de intencion, creo que lo hace muy bien. felicidades y saludos desde mexico
not a fan of this performance, must be hard though to just go right to this number in that atmosphere though. When I saw it in London this scene was amazing. Brad had much better tap and emotion.
The Angry Dance scene is quite different on Broadway and in London. And you're right it is hard to capture the atmosphere and feel for the dance in a once-off performance at the Tonys. However I have seen both the NY version of the show and the London version several times and I have to say that I much much prefer the NY version. Ive not seen Brad ( tho ive read good things ) but I loved Trents Angry Dance both on Broadway and when he was in London. His tap is really brilliant.
This is brilliant but does not give justice to the live broadway productions when in the beginning he starts in his bedroom and throws his mattress. but awesome anyway…congrats to all the "Billy's"

these annoying posturing little dance school boys do, yes, but not boys in general

i am dreadfully sorry, but i don't like this.
it's too dance school.
jaimie bell in the film was raw and emotional, masculine and real.
i'm not blaming this boy or the other boys for the show's failings, but by theatre's very nature, all the raw physical emotion becomes weak and posed.
it doesn't help that i find elton john absolutely abominable either.

what i like about trent T. is that he doesn't act gay at all..he may be gay in real life, but compared with david and the other boy..trent appears just like a real boy with emotional conflicts.

My son and I love the "Angry Dance," but take a look at all the Billys in the 60th anniversary BAFTA. Doing an American version of this for the Tonys would have been wonderful.
FrankieinDC 2 years ago
At the Tonys, I believe it's traditional to only do numbers straight from the musical. Since the choreography is nominated, they wanted to only show what would appear in the show. I agree that the BAFTA dance was amazing, though.

I'd say good things about this because I know one of the billys, but what?

this was like the most intense thing i've ever seen in my life. i have to see the musical.
i do agree that this may not have been a good choice for the tony's however
elephantsrocmysox 2 years ago 4
this numbers wayyyy more intense if you actually watch the show. definately recommend it.
shortyFLIPinaH 2 years ago 3
the number itself in the real show is better but for the stage at the tonys they did the best they and it was great

Oh well, beggers can't be choosers
TomSkyFletcher 2 years ago 11
Oh, God I LOVE the Angry Dance-- but when you see it out of context of the show, it seems odd and slightly awkward because the whole First Act is a build up 2this song. U really have 2 "experience" BE 2 understand and fully appreciate the Angry Dance. Watching the entire show helps the number pack a bigger emotional punch. The COMPLETE Solidarity number would have been a fantastic choice for the Tonys. It's just more palatable a number for those who haven't seen the show or know much about BE.
Capricaquarius89 2 years ago 6
completely agree. they were going to perform solidarity but the tony organisers made them change it only a few days before the tonys because it was too long. the angry dance is amazing, especially if you've seen the show and understand the context, but i can imagine it would be confuse to those who haven't seen BE.
mrd4518 2 years ago 3
What a shame! Solidarity is the more visually stunning number too. I think it would be great if they would just televise PERFORMANCES from Broadway shows. No awards necessary, just great entertainers coming together and performing a selection of songs from shows currently playing on Broadway; and maybe gather casts from past winners. It'd be a great coming together of Broadway performers.
Capricaquarius89 2 years ago 3
I agree, Solidarity as a routine would have been spectacular at the Tonys but I think they would have struggled with all the bad language in that song. I mean how would they replace "when you were on the picket line, we went and fucked yer Mrs"....Too many F words in that song and to get rid of them all would have made it sound a bit silly. Certainly to those of us who have seen the show. But it is one of my fav numbers from the show.
"Express Yourself" would have been fun.
IrishboiBE 2 years ago
AGREED. i love angry dance, but all my friends who didn't see BE thought it was the weirdest thing ever
proudtheatredork 2 years ago 3
not to mention, the choregraphy is altered because it's not their set, so it's a little watered down. I wish they'd done Solidarity too. I saw this performance before I'd seen the show and I had NO idea what was going on.
jezzebelle2000 2 years ago 2
same here i didn't know what was happening but i loved the music for this song and the dance and thats what really got me interested in the show this is by far my favorite musical i have ever seen

I know the kid who was in the final cutting with this kid for the role.
This show has got to be amazing.
NickaGoesAcoustic 2 years ago
his emoting is absolutely wonderful. he is an actor. a powerhouse performance for a 14 year old asked to do the most dramatic moment of the show on the spot for the Tony's. How hard is that?!?!?! Unbelievably moving and wonderful. Deserves the Tony.....

I really think this is awesome, I think it's funny how at the end, he just gets up and leaves!!! lol

i love this dance and this part of the musical but i kinda wish they did something different,to maybe show off their singing or something...
huffelpuffheir 2 years ago
i agree. especially since there are THREE billys, not just this one, and there are others in the cast as well. also, this show is not just about dancing, theres much more to it
poeticlicense5 2 years ago 7
I agree. But the London cast only promoted Liam Mower as Billy-at least of the promos that I've seen. So at least the others get to perform at different events as well(:
oOdisneygirlOo 2 years ago
Ah yes, but at the RVP all 3 Billy's performed, no?? I just feel like that the Tony's are important enough for all 3 Billy's (:

I think someone will end up making a musical about michael jacksons music and his life like this
missfrootloop 2 years ago
they already are :) its gonna be called "thriller live"
fredalltheway 2 years ago
Thriller Live is already playing in the Westend in London. Layton Williams ( who used to play Billy Elliot in the London show ) was one of the first boys to play the young Michael Jackson in Thriller Live.

not a fan of this performance, must be hard though to just go right to this number in that atmosphere though. When I saw it in London this scene was amazing. Brad had much better tap and emotion.
elkthehero 2 years ago
The Angry Dance scene is quite different on Broadway and in London. And you're right it is hard to capture the atmosphere and feel for the dance in a once-off performance at the Tonys. However I have seen both the NY version of the show and the London version several times and I have to say that I much much prefer the NY version. Ive not seen Brad ( tho ive read good things ) but I loved Trents Angry Dance both on Broadway and when he was in London. His tap is really brilliant.
