And natural Uranium is everywhere in the soil, in the rocks and very massive in seawater, to an extent which makes DU look childish. Why is he talking about this stuff like it's weapons-grade uranium? DU only poses a danger if extremely large quantities are ingested or inhaled. The same is true for almost all weapons. A quick search of the World Health Organization will yield results showing DU has pretty much negligible health effects. If one is too attack the military for bad policies, there are far worst things than DU out there.

The Geneva protocol and Hague conventions did place bans on biological and chemical warfare, however, radiological weapons had not yet been invented by this time. While DU can cause collateral harm, it is not in excess of that caused by conventional weapons and it is safer for use than lead. As such, it does not fall under a biological or chemical weapon any more so than a lead shell or a flamethrower.

Depleted uranium (U238) is hardly radioactive, as it's almost exclusively alpha-active (the type of ionizing radiation that can be stopped by a sheet of paper) and not at all fissile. Uranium 235 is the "nasty" stuff in that respect. The point is that it's extremely toxic, not because of ionizing radiation, but the oxides of uranium are chemically extremely toxic metal compounds, and uranium oxidizes very rapidly in air, hence the health issues.

I'd also love to note how DU is mostly made up of Lead, Tungsten, and the stable isotope of U-238. Relatively stable, since it only emits alpha radiation... WHICH CANNOT EVEN PENETRATE PAPER. However, if the alpha particles are emitted from within inside your body then they can be fatal when ionising major organs and tissue. The whole point here is that if a shard of shrapnel enters your body, it can be absorbed into your bone structure, which would continue to release ionising radiation for a long time into sensitive areas such as bone marrow.

Just to clarify about the Depleted Uranium, it is not dangerous until it is aerosolized and inhaled as it burns up on impact. Uranium is pyrophoric and it burns in contact with the friction from the air. When a shell impacts a target the impact incinerates the DU turning it into a fine dust of Uranium oxide. It is when it is inhaled and deposited in the lungs that the low level radiation becomes a danger as it stays there and constantly irradiates the lungs.

Why is he talking about this stuff like it's weapons-grade uranium? DU only poses a danger if extremely large quantities are ingested or inhaled. The same is true for almost all weapons. A quick search of the World Health Organization will yield results showing DU has pretty much negligible health effects. If one is too attack the military for bad policies, there are far worst things than DU out there.

Ideally, I'd rather there be no need for any such battlefield weapons, and I am not saying the US has not committed war crimes, they've committed many, but DU as it is, is not one of them, particularly in a desert. It is entirely possible to hold DU safely with your bare hands and not suffer major problems. As I said earlier, its ingestion and inhalation that would actually cause issues.

The Geneva protocol and Hague conventions did place bans on biological and chemical warfare, however, radiological weapons had not yet been invented by this time. While DU can cause collateral harm, it is not in excess of that caused by conventional weapons and it is safer for use than lead. As such, it does not fall under a biological or chemical weapon any more so than a lead shell or a flamethrower.

Depleted uranium (U238) is hardly radioactive, as it's almost exclusively alpha-active (the type of ionizing radiation that can be stopped by a sheet of paper) and not at all fissile. Uranium 235 is the "nasty" stuff in that respect. The point is that it's extremely toxic, not because of ionizing radiation, but the oxides of uranium are chemically extremely toxic metal compounds, and uranium oxidizes very rapidly in air, hence the health issues.

I support the use of DU rounds by military forces. They are compact, effective, and devastating to the target. True they have some lingering radioactivity, but it is minimal. True U is poisonous in and of its self, but so is lead. The increased cancer risk for each person exposed is tiny.

We have always made an effort to collect stray uranium after the war was over, while little such effort is made with lead. It should also be remembered that Depleted Uranium is uranium that has had its radioactive component removed to as high a degree as possible for use in nuclear fuel.

It makes very effective projectiles and armor. What we really need a cheap replacement material with similar density. However depleted uranium can still be useful in other non military areas such as medical radiation shielding and ballast.

depleted means most of the radioactive element has been removed. It is less radioactive than natural uranium. Neither is anything to worry about. DON"T EAT IT. that's all you need to know.

many countries around the world have banned depleted uranium. the UN recently created a new resolution for countries who have used DU to release information of where they have used it. All countries agreed except for the US, UK, France and Israel, the same countries who are known to have used DU. if u have nothing to hide then why not release the info regarding ur use of DU.

depleted uranium is a win lose situation. if you put it on tanks then ull be protected and ur penetrators will kill the tanks that are posing a threat to the civilian life an your life. but since it is dangerous when it hits then that is also a factor. the army cant go back to steel penetrators. but one thing is that now they dont use DU for penetrators since terrorists dont use tanks. i dont think theyll waste a KE round to his some brick wall

I'd also love to note how DU is mostly made up of Lead, Tungsten, and the stable isotope of U-238. Relatively stable, since it only emits alpha radiation... WHICH CANNOT EVEN PENETRATE PAPER. Not enough energy to rip electrons off atoms, and relatively harmless considering how much the sun throws off.

@RugerM10 True, Alpha particles cannot penetrate paper, and so cannot penetrate the outer dead layer of skin. However, if the alpha particles are emitted from within inside your body then they can be fatal when ionising major organs and tissue. The whole point here is that if a shard of shrapnel enters your body, it can be absorbed into your bone structure, which would continue to release ionising radiation for a long time into sensitive areas such as bone marrow.

ALL of the Iraq war vets that were in field and saw combat are contaminated at identical levels as the people they used DU munitions on. DU stays suspended in the air for weeks to months. Then a contaminated vet gets home, makes a baby with his wife and unknowingly contaminates his wife and newly created embryo. Her lifespan has been greatly shortened. The child faces a birth defect rate exponentially higher

Google that and read one example of how stupid and irresponsible most people there are. They took hundreds of containers filled with yellowcake, mostly marked in English but also with the international standard of skull and bones and nuclear symbols- dumped the contents in a river people drink from, then used the containers to distribute water.

Just to clarify about the Depleted Uranium, it is not dangerous until it is aerosolized and inhaled as it burns up on impact. Uranium is pyrophoric and it burns in contact with the friction from the air. When a shell impacts a target the impact incinerates the DU turning it into a fine dust of Uranium oxide. It is when it is inhaled and deposited in the lungs that the low level radiation becomes a danger as it stays there and constantly irradiates the lungs.
