Thanks Peter for sharing your experiance, humanity and exceptional humility. I can't get on my trials bike now without thinking about how much I'd enjoy sitting with you and having a chat about trials and life.
You have got me thinking that I have to write down some of the stories told to me by my father about his experiances because if I don't they will be lost forever.
Take care Peter. It's a richer world with you in it.
You were 12-13 when the war had started and about 18, when it ended. I guess you didn't get in time for much action? Were you conscripted or did you sign up?
I'm sorry to be the one to point this out to you but, most people aren't " taking the piss" and he's a very successful youtuber- tv appearances, radio appearances and meeting the queen. I hope that clears up to your small mind that he's not just some crack-pot old fool and if you actually watch his videos you will find that out. For instance I direct you to his video "Crabby old man".
I never quite understand the motivation behind some of the exercises dreamed up by various military branches. I do realize they are trying to prepare one to be "tough" and to be able to withstand various circumstances. So odd some of them! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Peter...thought i would stop by and visit....Its so interesting to listen to you..i always learn something...everytime. Simple wisdom. Don't jump into a big water tank. Hah hah.
To jump into the cold water was the only true thing you had to prepare if you were in the navy, I suppose. I mean, cold water is the thing that was surrounding you for month, right? You better know your enemy...
I presume that was National Service, Peter. I just missed it, and the last guy I knew who went in was 11 months older than me. That seemed great at the time, but I now realise I missed out on having such great stories to tell the youngsters of today.
Peter, Butlins and east coast suggest you are referring to Skegness, ?am I right ?, we visit there every year, it's where the annual rock and blues bash is held, they still use those same chalets ( much nicer now though ) there are monuments on site from your army days !!!!!
Peter, why don't you get one or two of those cameras you can leave on all th etime so we cna drop in from time to time to see what you're doing? Even though we've never met I feel I know you. You are never alone my friend!
I remember our DIs weren't allowed to touch us, so they came up with other cute tricks. He would step on your shoes and yell about your sloppy uniform and make you stay in barracks and clean floors with a toothbrush, or one time we went for a march with full gear in winter coats and he had us take 2 stretchers along and said we would not go back until 2 guys were out cold. Lovely memories, right Peter? The good old days. Enjoyed your video as always.
I actually went to Butlins at Skegness - it was freezing cold and the wind made it worse. The swimming pool was good, but the rest of it was pretty awful.
Please don't think you live alone... you are a keyboard away from a universe that loves you. However, the ones on Mars are only out for a good time, so don't mention skimpy bathing trunks.
I was in the Navy from 1988-1992. My experience wasn't as rough as yours, but I sure grew up a lot during my boot camp experience. Loved your story. The tank of cold water sounds horrible!! ;)
