Western civilizations invented compasses on their own, although it came some years after it originated in China.... Success was all about how you utilized your technologies, Chinese didn't use compass well just like they didn't use fire powder well..

However, It is clear that the Chinese had the compass before Europe. You can postulate that it was invented independently, but that is not considered a fact.

Both religions stem from the same origins, shared by Judaism, in that all three faiths hails back to Abraham as their originator. Making simplistic statements about who came first will not make things true and makes about as much sense as "my dad can beat up your dad".
The compass was invented by Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor, who fought against Chiyou, Miao/Hmong's Emperor, during the Battlefield of Zhoulou about 2500 B.C. Chiyou fogged up the battlefield while having troop slaughtered and killed many Huangdi's troop. Luckily, due to the compass, Huangdi was able to get free back home to the south of the Yellow River. Hmong were originated from the north. Even the Korean worship Chiyou as Chiwoo.
chinese were AFRAID of miaozu(hmong or mong) so they builded the great wall to keep us out.
