I've never owned an Eheim, so I personally couldn't say.

I clean my 405 every two weeks. It has quite a bit of sludge in it by then, but is still going strong. Mostly it's the sponges/floss that need to be cleared of junk at that point, but I always rinse the bio-max in old tank water too.

How loud is the 405 compared to something like an Eheim?
