I've always liked this song (probably because my great, great grandmother's name was Susanna). I must admit I was surprised to find that people think it is a Civil War song. If I'm not mistaken, it was written in 1848. The Civil War was fought 1861-1865. Incidentally, the author of the song ( Stephen Foster) died in 1864. Thanks again for posting the tune.

This song was the anthem for the Gold Rush, not the Civil war. Stephen Foster published the song in 1847, shortly before gold was found at Sutter's Mill.

Lincoln didn't start the war. And we didn't throw the constituion out the window, the South was never considered a foreign nation, therefore executive was still in power to make decisions regarding reconstruction.

I've always liked this song (probably because my great, great grandmother's name was Susanna). I must admit I was surprised to find that people think it is a Civil War song. If I'm not mistaken, it was written in 1848. The Civil War was fought 1861-1865. Incidentally, the author of the song ( Stephen Foster) died in 1864. Thanks again for posting the tune.

Its a good song, and it really helped me for my American History class. We did learn that slavery had a place in the war, but that it wasn't the only reason for it.

@Allurade well remeber the american constitution said slavery was ok for over 90yrs also it was the american flag that flew over all slave ships that came here and also that the last documented slave ship to come to america was in 1808 52yrs before the war between the states if u dont beleive me just research it for yourself
