When I hear the shrieking girl bands of today, and the mass-produced boy bands, I just wish this intelligent, driving big band music was popular now. We lovers of jazz have to dig it out. Where did the bloody world goo wrong?
Carl Saunders is one of the greatest bebop and lead trumpet players around today, to slam his tone and his phrasing is ridiculous, IMO.
If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything, music isn't about slamming someone to make you feel better about your own musicality it's about sharing. If you don't like what someone has to offer you can just say no thanks, not screw you.
Not a discouraging word shold be heard , especially from the peanut gallery . Sometimes I wonder about the effect of "Star Search" and "MTV" on the critical remarks made by people attempting to imitate that kind of "smug'" without any conviction ,dedication, or commitment . The "Russel Garcia" book on arranging listed the abilities that would be available to a student that studied the course of his book and the last thing listed was criticism , the lowest denominator . Great video here ,thanks.
Looking at the apparent age of the audience is somewhat discouraging as this type of music also needs young cats to not only play it but also support it. Great post with the creme of the California jazz scene in the band.

nice sax and piano solos . The trumpet solo was very forgetable because the tone was average and the phrasing was unmusical.
