  • If you don't have 3D glasses, use cross-eye 3D?

  • @svarten009 I think they have options for both cross-eye and wall-eye 3D, whichever is more comfortable for you. But it's really only the flat Earth animation and the Orion pan-around where it's really effective.

  • bore video waste of time.............

  • Genial!

  • I tried adjusting the video quality, now the 3D mode says an error occurred and I'm not able to see it on 3D or without. I only get audio and the subtitles. Anyone know a solution to this?

  • @Seiku Right-click the video and select "Report playback issue." Let YouTube know what's going on.

  • @Seiku Something else you can try: go to youtubeDOTcom/select_3d_mode and click the appropriate mode. Then try it again.

  • @shanedk That worked, thank you!

  • Aw, pity the glasses from the cinema don't work.

  • KOOL!! Nicely done.

  • This is cool and all, but what if we don't have 3D glasses? :(

  • @vspqbd Just watch it normally?

  • @shanedk

    Yeah, that works too.

  • And now I need 3D glasses...

  • @JBSauce

I just set it so two plastic CD cases, one red and one blue, would work (poorly)

    yeah, I'm that stingy.

  • @Albukhshi It's just crazy enough to work....

  • @JBSauce

it does, but very poorly; and one's arms get tired propping them up after a while :(

  • @Albukhshi lol

  • I poured two different powerades onto my glasses and the 3D works fine.

  • NICE!

Unfortunately not all 3D glasses use the same filter colors.

look forward to the day when polarized light is the filtering method for 3D computer models.

  • @CHAS1422 If you click the 3D button at the bottom of the video, you'll be given options for different color glasses.

Polarized glasses would require a special monitor.

  • Cool video, but constellations can be used accurately for navigating. This is fairly redundant in today;s society with GPS, but it is a useful skill to have if you ever get lost in the wilderness.

  • @Not2Sane True.

  • This is pretty cool. Thanks for taking the the time to do this

  • This is super cool dude.

  • damn and me without 3d glasses lol

  • Chosing to make this video 3D is a WAY cool idea idea man.

  • really cool shane, thanks for sharing

  • @ShaneDK Thank you for your content

  • I thought you did this a long time ago.

I like to show people the "summer triangle," and point out that Altair is about 14 light years away, Vega about 26 and Deneb about 2600.

  • @Astrobrant2 I did, this is just a version that works with YouTube's 3D system.

  • @shanedk Gotta try it sometime.

  • Shane, have you ever been to the Griffith observatory after they renovated it? I think you'd enjoy the new planetarium a lot.

  • @hugesinker Not familiar with that. Where is it?

  • @shanedk It's in Los Angeles. I would highly recommend it if you happen to be out this way.

  • @hugesinker No, wrong coast. We actually have a very good planetarium here--50' dome, unfortunately their equipment is stuck back in the '80s and they don't have anywhere near enough money to upgrade to the modern stuff.

  • @shanedk

it's sad that this has to be. but it raises a question: is there money anywhere for what is worthy?

the government is so incompetent that they somehow made so that there is too much money, yet too little at the same time. like an Uwe Boll movie in regards to plot. like yesterday when I lost 9,000$ in scholarship money, because govt. shut down several scholarships I relied on.

and of course, due to the local laws, I can't get a real job to pay for Uni...just a shit 400 a month one.

  • @Albukhshi I believe JacobSpinney has a really good video on how government is responsible for college being so expensive to begin with.

  • @shanedk

I have seen it-and he is absolutely correct. I've seen it happen in Texas (which was one reason why I went to Colorado), and now here in Colorado.

  • @Albukhshi Since you're talking about money for planetariums, this sort of thing is not what governments should have to be doing. The Griffith observatory, for example, was built by a wealthy businessman who wanted to make astronomical exhibits available to the public. Bill Gates could fund his own space program. It bothers me that so many wealthy people have such little imagination-- buy another mansion, buy another fleet of limos. Any economic activity is better than nothing, but come on.

  • @hugesinker

true-I do not dispute that one bit. Iwas commenting on how the government has mismanaged the economy (not that they're supposed to manage it). it makes it very hard for institutions to get money-even from private sources.

especially of course, when you consider just how, as you said, unimaginative are the current generation of millionaires (I'd say socially negligent). one of the rare the exceptions-at least here in Ft. Collins is the the guy funding my College, Ed Warner

    cont.

  • cont.

of course, it helps that Ed is a Libertarian, and all round badass. but he can only give so much money; we need more socially consiece millionaires IMO. and with all the government "regulations", making it hard to just ladle out the dough (you should see some of the forms), smaller donors are becoming an increasingly endangered group, and Universities (and observatories) are forced to rely more and more on govt-withdrawel from govt. "support" being a lot like withdrawel from Morphine.

  • @hugesinker Believe me, if I were a zillionaire, I'd give the James H. Lynn Planetarium whatever they needed to upgrade to a state-of-the-art digital dome. As long as they gave me free admission for life, that is. :^)

  • How do you get "accurate to within one light year"? I've got the distance to Betelgeuse as 643 +/- 143 ly (according to wiki); and I've seen distances for it range from 500 to 900 ly. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but saying such accuracy is awfully misleading. I note that Tabit (pi3) in the upper right corner is only 26 ly from us and was as close as 12 ly about 120,000 years ago. I note one image of it does a little retro dance at the end when you re-merge the views to a single dot.

  • @puncheex Okay, good point. I should have said it like "one light-year resolution" or something like that.

The "retro dance" is a rendering glitch that happened when I merged the 3D back into a 2D image.

  • Erk... i was hoping for ordinary sterescopic, not anamorphic 3D, from the thumbnail :P I can see ordinary 3D using polarized, autostereo or stereoscopic, but not anamorphic (my eyes try to focus on each color and I just get a headache). I was going to cross my eyes :P

  • @RyuDarragh There should be a 3D button under the video that allows you to change your viewing method.

  • @shanedk: That did it. Side by side mode works, but I'm going to DL the video and use my player, since I can make it strect the video out properly. Thanks :) (Loved the Eeepy Bird 3D "Human Propulsion using Diet Coke and Mentos" test video :P)

  • @RyuDarragh Just a nit pick, it is Anaglyph not anamorphic. Anamorphic is where you squeeze a 16:9 aspect ratio image horizontally to fit it on a 4:3 signal.

  • @AGrandt: Ah, yeah. Right. Shows how much I care for most 3D formats :P

  • i liked the 3d. i also like psychedelic stuff sooo yeah....

    great video shane.

  • I don't have any 3D like stuff :-(

Also, how did you render this, especially with the 3D red and blue shades? Blender? VPython?

  • @FHomeBrew 3D Studio (very old version). I set up two cameras (one for each eye) and rendered it twice.

  • @shanedk Thnx, there's probably a tool for that now lol. Also, how did youtube help you out with the 3D thing?

  • @FHomeBrew You make the video with the left half of the screen with the left eye view and the right side with the right eye view. You then put yt3d:enable=LR in the tags.

  • The 3d didn't quite work for me, but that was still pretty cool.

  • Shane,

It's not that "it *can* be useful for locating stars" - it IS useful for locating stars. I've tracked down some Messier objects with my backyard telescope (got it last month and had only 2 fair nights since) just by knowing their approximate location in one of the constellations. Using some other method would be quite tricky, since the stars move across the sky and I have a Dobsonian.

Other than that, great video. I'm looking forward for more.

  • My sister believes astrology is a real science .

  • @no1saphead: Yes, it is. A real psuedo science. The real science parts are astronomy and social engineering. The pseudo part is that these have any real effects or relationship to reality.

  • And this is when you regret throwing out your 3d glasses,

  • Shane,

It's not obviously the constellation for me at least, I would have found this word being left out far more friendly :) Although perhaps you said it on purpose to deliver the later message in a more contrasting way :)

Either way, as a subscriber, I like this type of video and would like to see more.

  • @Nerusai

PS. What music did you use?

  • @Nerusai Credited at the end.

  • @Nerusai Okay, but I felt pretty safe as Orion is the most recognized constellation of them all.

  • @shanedk

    Fair enough :)

Was first looking in my subscriptions for the normal version of this, then found out it was a year old :) I like your videos like this, they provide real information / science :)

Looking forward to the next one!

  • Sadly, I do not have 3D glasses. D:

  • @videogamer810

neither have I... use the cross-eyed method

  • 0 people are .... hmmm... maybe I should wait longer for a dislike.

  • Yay, my presbyopia comes in handy today. I can look cross-eyed without focusing too close.

  • Aw, don't have glasses :(

  • Im glad I have my 3D anaglyph glasses. That was awesome.
