One of the most difficult scenes to watch in movie history, imo. My feelings weren't so cut and dry, but pretty mixed actually. I mean, innocent lives were lost, and for that he deserved to pay. But, you can't help but feel for him because all of the shit he went through. Coming back to absolutely nothing, no help, no compassion...just a difficult ass movie to watch, but one of my FAVES.
As soon as the Judge said Life, Anthony was gone. O-Dog from Menace to Society came out @0:20! Great movie! I hope the Hughes Brothers will make more films!
im a marine same as anthony i feel him 100% fuck that judge he was probably an officer who dident do shit and the one time he did he gets a fuckin medal and thinks hes better fuck him he probably sat in a tent all day while anthony was digging fighting holes and tryin to make shure he dident get his throught cut when he was on his rest cycle
This ending made me VERY SAD! I was 9 when I saw this and shit like this makes u think! This country is corrupted and probably will NEVER change! We live in a SELFISH WORLD! Anthony should have NEVER put in the preacher in the scheme, that shit made it worst for everybody in general!
How can that judge say Vietnam was not a "Real War"? What a conceited thing to say. Let him tell that to all the soldiers that are killed and maimed that what they went to wasn't real and didn't really happened...
That's exactly what I said. I'm like, 'what kind of bullshit is that?!' I mean yeah, World War II was about stopping the Axis of Evil and Vietnam was about fighting insurgents. Regardless of the reasons for either war, lives were lost, blood was spilled, men served their country faithfully and without question, but the Vets from Nam were treated like shit after coming home from fighting a war they didn't really want anything to do with to begin with.
its easy for him to say that vietnam wasn't a war. first he looks upper class so he obviously came home to more than nothing, secondly vietnam was probably one of the most gruesome wars on our part, thirdly, he just sounds like an asshole.
cops have the right to open fire on armed robbers, and it isn't a crime. cop killing is, moron.
also, the judge is right. he is a disgrace. why is it that many veterans are successful after military service, despite having disadvantaged backgrounds? the guy portrayed in the film is a typical weakling who turns to robbery due to his lack of talent and intelligence. he's based on a real-life criminal fucktard.
@zackhanscom we all know it is a crime to kill a cop. but think about it, after getting out of the marine core, anthony had NOTHING; no money, no good job, no good house...that was all he could do. if he knew he wouldnt get shit from joining the marines, he would have never joined. he was right in his action to get pissed off at the judge. if the country never robbed him of his rights he would have never been involved with that crime. not think about that before talkin again
@mabney11 There was also no mention of him ever applying for pension, college money for training or anything of the like. Haywood T. Kirkland, who the character is based on, turned to crime when he couldn't find a job...but he actually was GIVEN and WORKED a job at the post office after coming back (he was also offered a spot on the police force), which he left because he was bored with it. It may not be ideal, but it's still a damn good job, with benefits.
@anto1982 IT'S THEIR JOB NOT TO GIVE UP THE MONEY. Is that a serious point you're making? As a cop, or security officer for an armored car, you are REQUIRED to defend the money that is being transported with your life. That's what you sign on for when you take that job.
In one sense I can't argue against the 15 years to life sentence. About 8 innocent people did get killed. I think Anthony realized that when he did say that he never meant for anyone to get hurt. Most likely Anthony probably got out after 15 years. He wasn't a career criminal. However I did find Martin Sheen's inference that Vietnam wasn't a real war condescending, not to mention insulting to people maimed or killed in Vietnam. I wonder how the family of a dead Vietnam vet would react to that.
No way he got out after 15 years, i have an uncle who received 5 years to life and he went in at 20 and just turned 53, i've never met him, when they say LIFE..IT MEANS LIFE!! look at Red in Shawshank Redemption..what life did he have to look forward to? He got out as an old man, scared of the world. And one more thing, this stuff is gonna start happening alot more, as these banks throw people out of their homes. Check out Capitalism by Micheal Moore, the Revolution is coming back Jeff!!
@SonOfGod3000 People are getting thrown out of their homes due to their own ignorance. Signing off adjustable rate mortgages with no down payments, and often buying homes more expensive than they could afford to begin with is all a matter of personal responsibility. Ignorance is never a defense when you sign a contract that states everything. And Michael Moore is a moron who has lots of ideas on things he has no clue about anyway.
If it lends anything to my point I have a B.B.A in Finance.
Well, um, does anyone think that the judge's comment about WWII being a "real war" had something to do with Anthony's outburst? I know that Anthony's pretty angry overall in the film after comming home to say nothing of his sentence, but that comment had to have gotten to him after all he endured in Vietnam.
Yeah, but at least he has the chance to avoid life in prison if he behaves himself and will get out in 15 years, which I don't think he heard. All he focused on was the life part. But I'm just saying, after everything he did for this country in Vietnam, for some holier than thou judge to belittle all of that had to have gotten to him, too.
Thats was some G shit, I woulda threw the chair too...Even though he killed somebody, you can't really blame him. I would have given him probably the same, but still that was some g shit.
This part didn't make a whole lot of sense. Regardless of his military service, the dude participated in a robbery that resulted in several cops and guards being killed.
Any reasonable court would have given him life without parole. Instead he gets off with the possibility of parole in 15 years, and yet he acts like he's the victim of an unjust system! He should be greatful he received such a light sentence.
The point of that scene is that is shows that you can teach a man to kill but you can't un-teach a man to kill. Thats why once a Marine always a Marine. The lines can become very blurred, Vietcong, civilian, cop, just another kill.
My cousin is a Marine and has the same name as me and it took an extra 48 hours for me to buy a rifle because they scrutinize Marines hard.
Hey I'm a vet myself (U. S. Navy, 4 years), and a current member of the National Guard, so I can understand what you're saying, but it doesn't change my main point. Anthony clearly should have gotten life in prison for his crimes, but instead he gets a really light sentence and still complains about it like its some horrible injustice.
the movie was made to portray the hardships that took place for black or rather poor soldiers who came back from the Vietnam war...when they came back they were still poor despite the fact they put their life on the line for this country...he gets mad because the reason he resulted to stealin in the first place because the army did not give pay him the money he needed after riskin his life for this country and now he was goin to jail for trying to get that money he deserved can u blame him?
Yes I can. It's not like he got paid less then any other veteran. Blaming the military pay scale for criminal activity would give all veterans a free ride on comiting crimes.
Weather or not he got paid a decent wage isn't the issue. The issue is weather or not he is reasonable for being upset at receiving a 15-to-life sentence for being involved in several murders (At least one of which he personally commited). For reasons I stated before, I don't think he is.
so why he is angry is understandable but not reasonable? i kinda thought the two were synonymous with each other?...also the ending could make sense because its obvious his lawyer based his whole defense on being a war veteran and it could be that he believed his own lie that he should get off because he is a war veteran which then led him to feeling betrayed and angry at his country
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. He did all that shit & still ended up with nothing. Now he's just gonna rot in jail for life...What a sad ending to a great movie.
Man i love this movie and this seen. And like the other guy said you can really feel for him,"After all I did for my fucking country?" and now hes going to jail.Sad but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I keep playin this shit over and over man i just love how Larenz Tate responds to the judge's decision. Life .... uck he mean life. For all this shit i did for this muthafuckin country .. man hes a great actor.
