BS we all have a choise to say yes or no! The reason our children learn that white is better is beacause that is what you keep teching them. If we do not like it tech them something else !!! Take responsebility for your own lifes and STOP blameing our problems on everybody else.
its sad that people feel so weird about "good hair, bad hair" and i always love to see a black woman confidently wearing her natural hair but when she is rocking her weave or wig or what ever ppl get upset...these poor children are also seeing this and it terrible because to have a little girl thinking the only way she can be pretty is with straight hair, its just wrong. i know its not how society is but this should not be the message that little girls are getting
Dont think I'm saying your wrong or that I know exactly how you feel cause i dont, I am a white girl but i do wear wigs and extensions. i totally 100% agree with you about the beauty image and this is actually why i feel i have to wear wigs also. i have very thin hair and i dont feel beautiful without it
You made some good points. But I really think you're over reaching when you blame the history of slavery being the reason black women wear wigs to have straight hair. The fact is, white women do not corner the market for having straight hair. Latina, asian, indian, middle eastern women etc all have straight hair, not just whites. Also, these women are considered to be just as beautiful (if not MORE beautiful) than white women.
@Lavern4101 It just so happens that black people are the only race who are generally born with kinky hair. Kinky hair is a distinct trait among african people, while ALL of the other races have straight, wavy and curly hair. So its not about trying to look 'white', it's about trying to compete against all the other non-black races who have that 'good hair'. To me, wigs and weaves look fake and unnatural on a black woman. They should learn to take pride in their real hair.
I think black people fail to realize lighter skinned people were favored in Slavery because they were blood offsprings of the slave owner So in actuality the white slave owner favored dark they engaged in sexual relations with the African dark skinned slave First! The lighter skinned secondly because it was their blood I promise you no white person thinks a black woman looks white, whiter or whitish because she has on a straight wig or weave. African Americans pump that warped agenda
Most Blacks in America are mixed and I can style myself to look whiter or blacker depending on my mood. How about I feel good in both looks.
How about slavery does not define black peple. slavery was in the U.S. and it was a blink of history ,there was blackness 100 of years before Amercan slavery. Is your mother white?
How about black women got the highest self esteem on earth.White girls don't have naturally blond hair they dye it., and if you talk to a white girl their self esteem is usually sucky.I got gorgeus hair, but I love wigs and they got plenty of dark complected people got so called white hair. Don't get caught up on so up on white stanards of beauty,A lot of people is just fine with blackness. We got you tube now.
I do agree with you that a lot of us are stuck on straight hair But I do not think that wearing straight hair is trying to be white. What about natural haired women who still flat-iron their hair? It is not always about trying to look white. A lot of times it is about being versatile.
I do know of one actress who is a WOC and yes she wore a wig in the 60's. She no longer wears a wig but uses her natural hair. She is as stunning now as she was on Star Trek. And I have had the honor of meeting Nichelle Nichols a few years back. I am a white woman who does in fact wear wigs because my natural hair has been falling out due to one too many colorings. I understand where you are coming from though.
you know, I am a white woman, and I found your video because I was searching for wigs and there is something I want you to understand. Even if you are white like me, we are still searching for that ideal beauty that doesnt exsist. I am this white girl but I'm not pretty enough, skinny enough... constantly changing my hair. but times are changing. Im a nurse and I see nurses going around with natural black hair, now, just like us they have to have some control over it
@sixdumboutlaws Not quite. Imagine if hair was unacceptable. Not just less than the beautiful . When blk women go natural alot of times it effects their romantic, family & even professional lives (@6:10). Also consider how most women have " Go Natural" instead of embracing this texture from day1. We all have power but blk women have 2 conceed that power 2 have the life they want. Instead of jumping up, listen 2 this woman as she explain what life for a blk woman is like.
Thanks for the blunt and honest discussion on this. I wish more people could be real about this subject. Of course its ok to do whatever you want with your own hair. But at the end of the day when I took off my deep wave 12 inch wig I had to ask myself. " Do I like that nappy headed woman in the mirror?? The answer was. "NO." But its me...and the fake hair was keeping me from loving who God made me. So I decided to learn how to care for and beautify my natural hair. A new standard!!PKizzm.
excellent point dearest! thanks for posting this :] and i must say that all you said is the sad truth, but unless we admit to it, things won't change. sadly, many will still refuse to acknowledge what is blantly proven in today's societies *cough* missmia lol but that's ok...we can only hope for a better future for later generations in this area :]
awesome... I love your videos. I live in Japan and I had tried the wigs and synthetic hair for a while and then I just got locs and never freakin looked back lol! I have no more problems with my hair.
I will acknowledge that in the media, film and magazines white women are featured more predominately than women of color. And some view that as a standard of beauty.
But I would disagree with the generalizations you make in your arguement. You have taken out family/friends and their influence in your arguement.
If you have strong WOC representatives in your life you will have a stronger sense of self. I never used white women as a SOB to me that is insane.
Well I think that's the point you know? We need to be aware of the outside influences so we can try to adjust accordingly. So we can try to steer our children in the right way. I just think we need to come at it from an honest place.
Friends and family can work the opposite way. A lot of my friends pressured me to relax my hair and get weave. I had one friend that had dreads and was very afrocentric though and that was encouraging.
@vikingaprinsessan I agree. I feel sorry for women who are not confident in their skin its sad. However, ALL human beings manipulate their hair in some way.
Black women are not more or less unique in this capacity it all. That to me is a misguided myth that has perpetrated divisiveness among WOC about their hair choices. WOC are the only ones who have to justify, quantify, and politicize our hair! I won't play that game. But Opinions are like assholes everyone has one right? lol Good video
The whole point of my video is not to politicize hair, I am not one of those purists who think we need to be natural or we are slaves to the white man or whatever heh. I think everyone should be free to wear whatever they want for any reason.
I do think though, that black women are unique in altering their hair to appear more white. I think there is an important distinction that must be made between a Swedish woman who dyes her hair dark brown and a black woman who wears weave.
it's not that serious....there are white people that tan to look darker and sometimes even braid their...Not everyone thinks the white woman is the best image of beauty, I thinks some of the most beautiful women are black. For me good hair is healthy hair..
your trip sounds amazing! can't wait for that video.
I see exactly where you are coming from.I read somewhere a while ago Beyonce had alot of work done so she would be more apealing to "a white audience" . As much as I hate to buy into the hype most of this stuff of races still holds true which is sad to say. People are People! The amount of melanin we have shouldn't matter.
Michele Obama wears guess what? Her natural hair. It's blown out and therefore she doesn't require a perm. I'm as light as you can get, you matter of fact are darker than myself. The research that you found for your paper in one word is bullshit!
Well I'm not sure you're right about Michelle Obama not having a perm but in any case, the fact remains that she does not feel comfortable wearing her hair natural and I don't think mainstream America would have been ready for her if she had.
If you would like the citations to the studies I read I can give them to you. On the other hand, you have provided no facts to back up your statement of "bullshit" other than the fact that you yourself are lightskinned.
Since you are into "fact checking", how about you google it and find out. Not to mention Michelle IS a standard of beauty and the last time I checked you can't marry much better than the President of the United States. As I think about it, Oprah has also been listed as a standard of beauty and we all know she hasn't permed her hair in decades and she got paid millions while wearing her "natural". Nobody gives a shit about what white stream middle america has to say or think. Except maybe YOU.
Wow I love what youve and it's said it's true....But white along with other suffer from some of the same issues as we do but not to the same intense level.
BS we all have a choise to say yes or no! The reason our children learn that white is better is beacause that is what you keep teching them. If we do not like it tech them something else !!! Take responsebility for your own lifes and STOP blameing our problems on everybody else.
