Here's an interesting fact: Nadal is 13-4 head to head against Ferrer. Nadal has beaten Ferrer 10 out of 11 times on clay. Nadal has only beaten Ferrer 2 times on hardcourt (3 times if you count when Ferrer pulled out after a thigh injury in the first set). Ferrer has beaten Nadal 3 times on hardcourt (twice in Slams).
When Nadal and Ferrer play on hardcourt, it's a great encounter. Nadal has problems against Ferrer on hard surfaces and Ferrer's great return of serve forces Nadal to grind it out

You can't say that he lost because of an injury and because he was sick. Ferrer played better he was painting the lines the whole match running nadal back and forth and pulling out amazing shots. Nadal may have been sick but he still lost in straight sets it wasn't even too close. If Nadal had taken ferrer to 5 sets than he could use injuries as an excuse. But for the #1 to lose so badly you cant honestly say it was just because he wasnt feeling well.
I just don't pay attention to what the players say, when it comes to these sorts of things. Nadal does it, Federer does it, Djokovic does it . . . pretty much all of them do it. It's always, "I wasn't feeling 100%," or, "I was really fatigued," or, "I didn't play my best," or, "I'm getting over XYZ injury." I find these comments to often be annoying; sometimes it's just stating a fact, but a lot of the time it seems to be in the vein of trying to demerit their loss, which is disrespectful.
Simply, there's no reason to expect that every time two tennis players step onto the court, both of them are going to play their absolute top game. It's not going to happen; those sorts of matches are very rare. So for a player to say what is basically, "I didn't play my very top game; if I did then I would have won," just speaks to that player's consistency. So what if they didn't? The other guy probably didn't, either. By this sort of logic, Gulbis should be world number 1.

I don't think Nadal was injured coming to this match. Ferrer though pushed him to his limits. I don't think this will be the last. Ferrer at AO11, Murray at AO10, Soderling at FO09, anyone who can make Nadal run excessively on the court will make him injured. Injuries are no surprises anymore.
Conditioning is probably the most underrated stuff in fans' mind. Its the most important part of sports, if u cannot move well u cannot win. Nadal can beat anyone on tour at 100% but he can't maintain it. He play at 50% or 30%, 20% much more frequently than federer, i think he is more unhealthy than 30yrs old federer. Federer plays at 60% consistently at this age, 90% consistently in his prime.

Great fight from Rafa after clearly being injured early. It's not like 2010 when he only showed injury in 3rd set. 1-2 he took timeout. But he was very much in this match. and actually watching it I think Ferrer would have won regardless. I mean he choked in the semis against Murray being up a set and 2nd set point at 5-4 40-30

And if something like that occurs you really cannot use that as an excuse for the fact that you lost because of an "injury" when you impose it upon yourself. Here's an interesting fact: Nadal is 13-4 head to head against Ferrer. Nadal has beaten Ferrer 10 out of 11 times on clay. Nadal has only beaten Ferrer 2 times on hardcourt (3 times if you count when Ferrer pulled out after a thigh injury in the first set). Ferrer has beaten Nadal 3 times on hardcourt (twice in Slams).
When Nadal and Ferrer play on hardcourt, it's a great encounter. Nadal has problems against Ferrer on hard surfaces and Ferrer's great return of serve forces Nadal to grind it out

You can't say that he lost because of an injury and because he was sick. Ferrer played better he was painting the lines the whole match running nadal back and forth and pulling out amazing shots. Nadal may have been sick but he still lost in straight sets it wasn't even too close. If Nadal had taken ferrer to 5 sets than he could use injuries as an excuse. But for the #1 to lose so badly you cant honestly say it was just because he wasnt feeling well.

I just don't pay attention to what the players say, when it comes to these sorts of things. Nadal does it, Federer does it, Djokovic does it . . . pretty much all of them do it. It's always, "I wasn't feeling 100%," or, "I was really fatigued," or, "I didn't play my best," or, "I'm getting over XYZ injury." I find these comments to often be annoying; sometimes it's just stating a fact, but a lot of the time it seems to be in the vein of trying to demerit their loss, which is disrespectful.

It's not going to happen; those sorts of matches are very rare. So for a player to say what is basically, "I didn't play my very top game; if I did then I would have won," just speaks to that player's consistency. So what if they didn't? nadal even said that he doesn't want to blame the loss on injury. he respects ferrer and he also said that he doesn't want to use the injury as an excuse, and that he would appreciate it if everyone can respect that. now THAT is truly humble, what great sportsmanship.

why do people keep saying it was an excuse of him being injured? Don't you even know that Nadal's game is based on his legs? Other players maybe good with their hands but Nadal is mostly with his legs, when his legs are injured, it's like Roger's right arms are injured, and if that, would you think Roger would be able to play well? It's simply because youre all Fed's fans and you dont like Rafa coz he's leading the H2H

@subzoroboy Most tennis players play with injures Nadal injuries is nothing new. The problem is the other players do NOT ANNOUNCE they are INJURED when they lose matches. Nadal is the only one that does that kind of bullshit.

LOL at some of the comments on this... those who think nadal would somehow concoct this injury down 2-1 in the first set, having won the last 3 majors, and against an opponent he has dominated cos he thought he was being outplayed, are completely out of it...prior to this match nadal was 12-3 head to head against ferrer, and had won the last 4... and his record in 5 set matches speaks for itself...so i dont understand how anyone could possibly think he'd thrown the towel in 1-2 in the first set

I don't think Nadal was injured coming to this match. Ferrer though pushed him to his limits. I don't think this will be the last. Ferrer at AO11, Murray at AO10, Soderling at FO09, anyone who can make Nadal run excessively on the court will make him injured. Injuries are no surprises anymore.

Conditioning is probably the most underrated stuff in fans' mind. Its the most important part of sports, if u cannot move well u cannot win. Nadal can beat anyone on tour at 100% but he can't maintain it. He play at 50% or 30%, 20% much more frequently than federer, i think he is more unhealthy than 30yrs old federer. Federer plays at 60% consistently at this age, 90% consistently in his prime.

Stop making excuses for Rafa, he lost because the guy on the other side of the net was crushing the ball. Look at the rally at 04:36, Ferrer's attack is pretty much unstoppable. And he was doing that the whole game. Nadal simply couldn't handle it.

All those who say that Nadal can't play better, have to watch some of his matches from 2010.Super agressive and making much more winners.I'm sorry but if Nadal played like this at the US Open Verdasco or Djokovic should have beaten him.I don't know if some injury was the problem but he was struggling with his every match at AO(except with Sweeting).Its was clear that something was wrong and he wouldn't win the title.Next time Rafa will beat Ferrer and you'll see

LOL where is the hamstring injury? Nadal is still running fast. Many excuses because u can't even run with hamstring strain. When he knows ferrer is playing better he comes out with it.

Ferrer was lucky he was able to play 110% that night and Rafa was playing with an injury. Normally, Ferrer wouldn't be able to hit constant winners every shot every match. Watch Ferrer's next match, he breaks down against Murray. Same case for Soderling in 2009 when he beat Nadal in 4 sets but lost in 3 sets in 2010. Everyone have their lucky days. Ferrer just happened to get double lucky.

that was a humiliating defeat. the whole match ferrer was putting pressure on nadal. he was in a completely inferior position. he mentally gave up because you can see how stunned his movements got by the end of the game

Nadal chose this style of play so there shouldn't be any reason to feel like he should have won if healthy. Injuries are parts of his game, if he gets injured during a match, that's his fault for playing the way he plays. Nadal was fit coming to the match, and there's no arguing that Ferrer truly pushed Nadal to his limits and got him injured as Nadal was trying to fight back. In that case, you got to give credits to Ferrer, coz he played unbelievable despite a 1-11 record.
