You know the thing I like about the older MB is they do what they want, 1 wiper? sure, cup olders? no thanks, just thinks like that made me respect this brand back then, i hope they return to this my way or the highway attitude
I had a Mercedes like this one. Utterly garbage. Well made exterior but the cost of upkeep and downright poor interior quality was among the worst experiences I've ever seen in any car. The buttons would get moister in them and stop working. Sometimes you would push the button and it literally went through the socket! The new Mercedes are much better, the 80-90s were bad.
@TheJamezMan I have one also (1992). Ill give it to you the interior doesnt hold well. but the cars are fairly easy to work on and parts arent that expensive. The inline six makes top end work accessible. My car has 170k miles and runs great. The ride is very smooth unlike some modern chryslers or fords. The cars were engineered to hold up and mechanically they do. A down side is the values dont hold well .Its an upside if your in the market for one. $2500 will fetch you a nice one .
@sariglenn And the trade in value on my 1992 300E is $1200 in good condition. They dont hold value. Its the only point I was making. But its not necessarily a bad thing if your looking for one.
Why is it these cars just dont hold their value? Trade in value on a 89-93 300 e with 150k miles is right at $1400. retail at $3400 in excellent condition. A toyota supra, rx-7 or mitsubishi 3000 gt go for even more than the benz.
Teenagers lust after fast cars more so than brilliant engineering come once-heralded-now-standard features. Expensive parts and labor then deters the practical highschool/college types. That leaves a fairly slim market, as most people with more than a few thousand in pocket will spend it, and most hard-up older folks will try and buy a much later model auto.
toyota supra? rx-7? are those in the same class as the benz.. clearly not.. those are racing cars that are highly sought after, and the dealers know that YOUNG punks LIKE YOU want to buy them.. so they will give you more, because they can sell it for more... I can still sell my 1991 for 4 grand EASILY because it is in mint condition. But i wont sell it because it will last longer than any supra, or rx7 for that matter :)
@sranjesuper umm Im 38 and i own a 1992 mercedes 300 E. I am just pointing out the obvious. They do not hold their value contrary to what u want to believe. I believe they are under valued and great deals can be found on them. I bought my 1992 300e for $1500. And no sir you cant get 4k for yours. Unless the mileage is less than 80k miles w/ no rust, or any flaws. The mint blue book is around $3500. Rx7's and 3000 gts book around $5500 for the same year. sorry it is what it is.
yes i can.. it all depends how your maintenance is.. if your leaking oil and your engine runs like shit, or you have lots of issues, you will get less money.. if its in top condition you can get 3-4 Gs for it easily... i dont care about the "book".. somebody who knos these cars will know how much their worth and will pay for it. The fact you got yours for 1500 is a steal so you should be just happy for that.
@sranjesuper i watch them religiously on ebay and other markets. The only ones I ever see go for 4k or more are the ones with around 50- 60 k miles, have been garage kept most of its life life, and have no rust or issues.. The one I paid $1500 for has higher mileage but the engine and tranny run great, the body looks like it was garage kept, and the interior was an 8/10. But now there is some sagging in the cloth. There are best offers on ebay for $2600 that have around 100k miles and look great
if you dont know already, get nology silver spark plugs, magnecore wires and nology ignition coil it will give you better performance and MPGS.. i currently get almost 600 km with 47L of gas on 60% highway driving. Better than a lot of 4 bangers today.
@sranjesuper Thanks a bunch. I drive my car daily to work 80 miles both ways. I notice at idle there is a flutter ( best word i could think of) coming from the motor. The idle ( rpm's) is constant but its like a flutter or pulse that comes and goes while its idling.
there is a hose on your intake that looks like a Y for vacum.. one end goes to your EZL ignition module.. disconnect that line, and suck up the seafoam with it.. i also use the transmission hose at the back of the intake too.. to spread the seafoam into all cylinders.. it will clean up all tha gunk from 20 years of driving.. and ur engine RPMS will seem to rise faster and the engine will idle better and smoother...
@sariglenn also if you havent changed your engine mounts for a long time, do so.. i just changed mine.. and i also had a little JOLT every few seconds in idle.. that jolt was just cuz of loose engine mounts.. so wen u get new mounts, seafoam, new plugs it should be butter smooth.. sometimes i cant feel my car is on... and while ur at it if its been a while, change ur distributor cap and rotor.. no aftermarket part for that though.
It says it does 0 - 100 in 7.5 .... is that for the 24 valve or the 12 valve? its hard to get any solid information on these cars, everywhere says something different

what a fantastic machine! although head gaskets can be an issue.i was lucky enough to work on these when they were still in production. much better built than rust prone 210 that replaced it
@DamnStraightM35A2 wtf? she's never gonna die trust me. even if my 5 cylinder gives which will be in a long long time. u never throw these 602,603,102,103 motors away! there rare and can always be rebuilt. and dont bull shit about money and price, im a mechanic, the motors are bullet prof, and i don't believe your timing gear broke i belive your timeing chain broke and your valves hit your piston. i have 4 sets of pistons for this 103 and a new head with head gasket and seals, its an ezy repair
don't worry i'm a mechanic too, i have the head off the timing chain is fine. the valves did hit the pistons, and mines a 606 24 valves. these 606.910 motors are rare for a 1995 the motors are not cheap, the parts for this motor are not cheap, I would have to get over $1800 of parts to fix it right. Or spend $1800 on a new motor with 220,000 miles or spend $1500 for a 1978 240D with the proven 616 that only has 90,000 miles. Which makes the most economical sence?
National speed limit in the US at the time of this commercial's production was 55mph. 0-60mph may have been more relevant in the real world but it's not something they could easily have advertised.
yeah, don't ever let anyone tell you that it is not a good car. the 300E is one of the best models mercedes ever produced, in regards to quality and reliability. I own a 560SEL and a 190E, but the 300E's are definately more refined and of higher quality. I also believe the original price gave the buyer more for their money than the other models.
I have a 90 300E with the 3.0 M103 motor. The on the interstate, car really did topped out at 140 mph by Speedo and GPS. readings. The Manual will do 144
I'd argue that (and I have an 87 300D Turbo). The M103 in the 260E/300E 2.6/300E and to a lesser extent the later M104 is HUGELY prone to cylinder head gasket leaks-sometimes at 75k miles or less, and the first batch of heads for the 300D's OM603 were prone to cracking-an issue exacerbated on US cars by the trap oxidizer. Don't get me wrong, I <3 the W124. But the older 123, while slower, was a much more durable car overall. Either way, at the end of the day, NOTHING is built like a Mercedes.
The only reason those engines have problems with head gaskets is due to overheating. Long 6 cylinder heads are prone to warpage during overheating, moreso than a 4 cylinder head bank. but overheating is preventable.....
You're totally right about I6s, but I think the 103/104 has an issue beyond that. I was the service advisor at a shop that serviced Mercedes (about 40% of our business) for 3 years and I'd say that probably 6-8/10 cars we saw with a 103/104 either had already had the h.g. replaced due to coolant+oil leaks or would need it during the car's time with us. I've never seen one make it over 160k, and I've seen it start leaking on cars with as little as 60k miles. (continued in 2nd post)
My 190E 2.6 was given to me because it had a head gasket problem-- oil in coolant and oil leakage around the back of the head gasket. it had 220,000 miles on it. It wasn't that difficult to repair, considering my dad was helping me! the most challenging part was pulling out the pin that is pressed through the main guide rail out from the head.
So it happens too often, imo, to just be people that overheated their cars. I've heard theories that the back of the engine ran a bit hotter than the front, leading to the head warping over time. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. That said, it wouldn't stop me from buying a 124 (or anything else) with the I6, I'd just budget for it to be safe. They're still some of the best cars ever made, period. I'm jealous of your 560 though, I miss mine so much it hurts and its been gone for 3 years.
And i would agree that the back might run hotter than the front, or the middle might be hotter overall, due to natural and other design characteristics. The front timing case cover is the only thing I would call a bad design on the engine, 30,000 miles later it weeps a little bit, despite having followed the correct sealing procedure from mercedes and other enthusiasts .....
Thats really not that bad for a 4,000 ibs car with around 175 hp. I know mines not that quick now, but it does have 168,000 miles. Plus it is 23 years old...Really tho, it handles great, is very predictable, and comfortable as well.
Yes the parts are very expensive, and the 300E's are very cheap thats why I bought three of them. two for parts and one in mint condition and my baby. Why need parts when you have parts cars:)
Not true. It is designed to start off in second gear to reduce the chance of wheel-spin and to have smoother acceleration. If needed it will downshift into first using the kick-down function of the gas pedal.
That was a small typo on my part. I know it was an inline 6cyl. But I did own one and something must have been wrong with it because it WAS slow. No response on takeoff whatsoever.
well, why didn't you simply got it fixed? you could have enjoyed one great car. mine has the 5-speed manual gearbox with limited slip differential. real porsche killer.
Have no clue why it was slow. It just was for some reason. No offense, but it was one of the most problematic cars I've ever owned. I've owned anything from Chrysler to Toyota to Volvo. By 108k miles, the tranny failed, the engine and trans mounts broke, as did the A/C, cruise, power headrests, stereo, most interior switches, one power window, and I'm probably forgetting some things. Was a work of art, but a nightmare as transportation. It's the only car I've ever had a transmission go bad.
I think the last owner destroyed the car. Mine is a 1986, it have 200000 km, and it have never failed me. I live in the Andes mountains in south America, the car is an absolute rocket and i think it will lastt forever. The problem in the car is thst isný fuel saver!
It was too tightly wound for my taste at highway speeds. Felt like it needed a 5th gear because the RPMs were too high. I didn't like that. Mine didn't last long at all. Was a frightening car to own. Always worried what would break next since it was so expensive to fix and always needed something. Doesn't drive well at all by todays standards. Cheap American cars now drive better than the 300E, but it is 20yrs old after all.
You are the first person that i know who had a bad experience with the 300E. The car run in high RPM, but you can change the 3rd gear in 160km/h(100mph). My father was an ingenierof the Ford Motor Company. He really admire the 300E, even the parts are very expensive, the car never gives mechanical problems, a probe of that is than in germany the w123 and w124 are taxis with 20 or 30 years on service, also they´re taxis in Africa (They don´t need to much care)
The first person? Hardly! Just look on youtube. Some other guy has starting problems with his 300E too! I laugh just to know I'm not the only one who's 300E isn't worth poo as actual transportation.
i live in the Andes Mountains in South America, i am member of the clasic car club of Ecuador, i have a lot of friends who have Mercedes 300E and they work properly. I am more than 2500 meters over the sea level and sorounded by hills (A lot of cars donpt work properly here). People paid like 10000 dollars for a 300E of 1988, and i mean the european version, the american version don´t work properly here!
So you're saying the US 300E isn't a very good car, or at least not as good as the Euro version? Curious. What's the difference? They don't work well in the US either, lol. You can get on Ebay at any given time and look up the 300E. You're bound to find at least one with under 150k and a bad auto transmission like mine had. Old Volvos are not as fancy, but much better mechanical and electrical quality. 4 Volvos between Mom and I. One MB and the last!
You had bad experience with one too? Sorry if you did. It really sucks, but I guess you know that already. Problems with a Escort is one thing, but problems from an MB is a whole other ball of wax.
Sure, but it only had 108k miles when I sold it. That's nothing in terms of mileage, especially on a Mercedes so they claim. I had an '85 Volvo 240 I sold just before getting my 300E. The only age related problem it had was the dash wiring shorted out. As ugly a problem as it was, it makes sense given how old the car was.
It's not that our grammar doesn't make sense we just use the term differently than you do. And before you start talking about our grammar look at your own in this comment you posted... :/
actually, i think every generation of the S-Class was overengineered, but it hasn't ever gone to the crazy extent that it used to since the W140. the stuff they do on the newer S-Class models are mostly rediculous stuff, like adjusting the license plate lamp. Still, some of the things they do today, like sport suspension, are still good things.
I always come to this video... Gives me goosebumps.

WhiteSTiLtd 2 years ago
My 190E 2.6 was given to me because it had a head gasket problem-- oil in coolant and oil leakage around the back of the head gasket. it had 220,000 miles on it. It wasn't that difficult to repair, considering my dad was helping me! the most challenging part was pulling out the pin that is pressed through the main guide rail out from the head.
marknute 2 years ago
So it happens too often, imo, to just be people that overheated their cars. I've heard theories that the back of the engine ran a bit hotter than the front, leading to the head warping over time. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. That said, it wouldn't stop me from buying a 124 (or anything else) with the I6, I'd just budget for it to be safe. They're still some of the best cars ever made, period. I'm jealous of your 560 though, I miss mine so much it hurts and its been gone for 3 years.
WhiteSTiLtd 2 years ago
And i would agree that the back might run hotter than the front, or the middle might be hotter overall, due to natural and other design characteristics. The front timing case cover is the only thing I would call a bad design on the engine, 30,000 miles later it weeps a little bit, despite having followed the correct sealing procedure from mercedes and other enthusiasts .....

Mercedes Benz is numero uno.

It is a powerful car even nowadays, I gave it a try a couple days ago and wow it was quick!
Ashlak 3 years ago 2
In 1985, it's the best car you can get.
Comparing to the early 1989 BMW E34 5 series.
For BMW, you must wait for 4 years to get the E34 that is good enought to competitive with W124. :)

Wow a stunning 7.5 secs! lol
romboy2008 3 years ago
Thats really not that bad for a 4,000 ibs car with around 175 hp. I know mines not that quick now, but it does have 168,000 miles. Plus it is 23 years old...Really tho, it handles great, is very predictable, and comfortable as well.
BeretCyclist 3 years ago 2
Well I agree for 86 car
that was pretty powerful. I compared some other makes in this class and year and have to admit MB was awesome.
romboy2008 3 years ago
Yes the parts are very expensive, and the 300E's are very cheap thats why I bought three of them. two for parts and one in mint condition and my baby. Why need parts when you have parts cars:)

does the w124 e230 use octane 98 or 95? can it use both, what will happen if you fill up with the wrong octane?
russen07 3 years ago
i use 87 octane in my w124 300E it dont hurt it

2nd Gear Starting was a gas-saving feature for 55 MPH in 1986...
How little those with Budwiser breath lament about things of which they nothing of.
W124's ROCK...
RStarga 3 years ago
The car was designed to start in second gear due to the catlitic converter overheating-problem. Im thinking bout buying one
sendegur 3 years ago
Not true. It is designed to start off in second gear to reduce the chance of wheel-spin and to have smoother acceleration. If needed it will downshift into first using the kick-down function of the gas pedal.

you guys have no clue at all. the 300e came out in 1985. it had no v6, but a 6-zylinder-in-line engine. it is not a s-class but an e-class.
and, above all, it wasn't slow. it was even quicker than the contemporary camaro iroq-z and porsche 944.
word!
beatcruiser 3 years ago 3
That was a small typo on my part. I know it was an inline 6cyl. But I did own one and something must have been wrong with it because it WAS slow. No response on takeoff whatsoever.
palebeachbum 3 years ago
well, why didn't you simply got it fixed? you could have enjoyed one great car. mine has the 5-speed manual gearbox with limited slip differential. real porsche killer.
beatcruiser 3 years ago
Have no clue why it was slow. It just was for some reason. No offense, but it was one of the most problematic cars I've ever owned. I've owned anything from Chrysler to Toyota to Volvo. By 108k miles, the tranny failed, the engine and trans mounts broke, as did the A/C, cruise, power headrests, stereo, most interior switches, one power window, and I'm probably forgetting some things. Was a work of art, but a nightmare as transportation. It's the only car I've ever had a transmission go bad.
palebeachbum 3 years ago
I think the last owner destroyed the car. Mine is a 1986, it have 200000 km, and it have never failed me. I live in the Andes mountains in south America, the car is an absolute rocket and i think it will lastt forever. The problem in the car is thst isný fuel saver!
jorgefia 3 years ago
It was too tightly wound for my taste at highway speeds. Felt like it needed a 5th gear because the RPMs were too high. I didn't like that. Mine didn't last long at all. Was a frightening car to own. Always worried what would break next since it was so expensive to fix and always needed something. Doesn't drive well at all by todays standards. Cheap American cars now drive better than the 300E, but it is 20yrs old after all.
palebeachbum 3 years ago
You are the first person that i know who had a bad experience with the 300E. The car run in high RPM, but you can change the 3rd gear in 160km/h(100mph). My father was an ingenierof the Ford Motor Company. He really admire the 300E, even the parts are very expensive, the car never gives mechanical problems, a probe of that is than in germany the w123 and w124 are taxis with 20 or 30 years on service, also they´re taxis in Africa (They don´t need to much care)
jorgefia 3 years ago
The first person? Hardly! Just look on youtube. Some other guy has starting problems with his 300E too! I laugh just to know I'm not the only one who's 300E isn't worth poo as actual transportation.
palebeachbum 3 years ago
i live in the Andes Mountains in South America, i am member of the clasic car club of Ecuador, i have a lot of friends who have Mercedes 300E and they work properly. I am more than 2500 meters over the sea level and sorounded by hills (A lot of cars donpt work properly here). People paid like 10000 dollars for a 300E of 1988, and i mean the european version, the american version don´t work properly here!
jorgefia 3 years ago
So you're saying the US 300E isn't a very good car, or at least not as good as the Euro version? Curious. What's the difference? They don't work well in the US either, lol. You can get on Ebay at any given time and look up the 300E. You're bound to find at least one with under 150k and a bad auto transmission like mine had. Old Volvos are not as fancy, but much better mechanical and electrical quality. 4 Volvos between Mom and I. One MB and the last!
palebeachbum 3 years ago
OMG thats me I feel so famous.
starbucksmunky 3 years ago
You had bad experience with one too? Sorry if you did. It really sucks, but I guess you know that already. Problems with a Escort is one thing, but problems from an MB is a whole other ball of wax.
palebeachbum 3 years ago
did it ever occur to any of you that you're talking about a 23 year old car, c'mon nothing lasts forever
dpw325 3 years ago
Sure, but it only had 108k miles when I sold it. That's nothing in terms of mileage, especially on a Mercedes so they claim. I had an '85 Volvo 240 I sold just before getting my 300E. The only age related problem it had was the dash wiring shorted out. As ugly a problem as it was, it makes sense given how old the car was.
palebeachbum 3 years ago
Not sure how my bad experience and FACTS get so many thumbs down. Denial is a sad thing. First-hand testaments speak volumes!
palebeachbum 3 years ago
The 300E started being produced in 1987.

It's not that our grammar doesn't make sense we just use the term differently than you do. And before you start talking about our grammar look at your own in this comment you posted... :/

24 valve 220hp
privee111 4 years ago
the one in this commercial is the 12v 177hp engine, the the 24v didn't arrive in it in till the early 90s
siamiam 4 years ago
My '87 had a 3.0L V6 177hp. Something must have been wrong with it because it was incredibly slow.
palebeachbum 3 years ago
hee hee no wonder it survived 10 years on the luxury market. btw last overengineered mercedes was the W140 of 1991.
whattheheck1000 4 years ago
actually, i think every generation of the S-Class was overengineered, but it hasn't ever gone to the crazy extent that it used to since the W140. the stuff they do on the newer S-Class models are mostly rediculous stuff, like adjusting the license plate lamp. Still, some of the things they do today, like sport suspension, are still good things.
