Call it what you want, but in my opinion Shepard Fairey has achieved the artist's version of the American dream. He went from a street artist putting his art up illegally to being the creator of the most iconic image of a U.S. President's campaign, and making money for his art, which is a pretty big accomplishment, to say the least. And sure he uses other people's photographs, but great artists steal.
It is my belief, there are original/good artist in this world and then there are hacks. Google "art for change, obey" to see how much shepard rips off artists for almost everything he does.
shepard's work is phenomenal, but it may be counterproductive to the street art movement itself... I don't think it's wrong that shepard wants to make this medium more mainstream and wants to capitalize off it, but a lot of people who are new to the street art scene see the medium as another way to get famous, in stead of free creative expression. (myself included) people need to be concerned about the free communication of ideas, not making money and being famous.
They were looking for the biggest talents in "street art".....so far the world knows about Shep and Kaws.....I wonder what other artist could make Cbs sunday morning news? (right now) There are a lot of graffiti artists that paved the way for these guys....that will never get this kind of recognition. Now that these artists have climbed up the art scene ladder hopefully they will lead the way for other artists to come up.
