  • does it come with the fog gun?

  • Last Track is

Faithless - Music Matters (Mark Knight Remix)

  • Your assigning the waveforms to the activator buttons never worked for me on my APC40 is there something i need to deactivate in my preferences?

    Cheers guys nice vid

  • Hey guys, I'm using the APC 40 along with the Launchpad. Was just wondering what soundcard you use live? Don't expect any secrets revealed or anything... Just wanting to look at new options for my own future live shows.

  • meh, this aint DJing

  • As a house music fan, its exciting but disappointing at the same time - I already miss the old "artistry" of two 1210's and some jumpy vinyl

  • what are the tracks that are played?

  • Does anybody know if this will work without much lag with a pentium processor... it's all i'm stuck with right now :(

  • R&D,

great video!!! been using my APC for a few months now, getting new ideas from videos and other programs on how to set up Live with the APC for DJing in front of an audience... I really dig how you set up the Pan/Send section on top of the super trigger and tempo cue, was wondering if you had your main channels assigned A/B for the crossfader... it would be awesome if you made another video about this without the sun interfering and maybe even a little more in depth... cheers!

  • hi, nice video. your mappings and fx are interesting. i usually struggle to think of how to dj with apc40 but this vid certainly helped. have you updated your mappings at all since this video was recorded. cheers!

  • perfect set... apple macbook pro 15 + apc 40

you dont need more to become a dj ^^

  • Great !!!!!

  • Hey, just wanted to let everyone know I've left Open Labs and started a new company called Music Computing. Check out the new gear at Music Computing or click the link below for videos. - Thanks, Victor Wong

  • Love ableton so much, im keen to get one of these but i doubt it would be ueful for me as a guitarist songwriter. Anyone have any ideas how this would be useful for me?

  • hey, ive never used ableton before, but im looking for a controller to start with, would this be good, or should i go with something else? i was also looking at the launchpad

  • record your mixes n load them on youtube!!

  • how do you map your bass kills that way? I really want to know please answer ASAP thanks

  • track 7 is Music Matters feat Cass Fox - Faithless (Mark Knight Remix)

  • He Guys,

    Amsterdam here, Ibiza much sunnier...

How did you midi-map your delay/tempo of each song?!

Saw you doing it, but didn't hear how...

Thanks in advance and peace out there!

    Peter

  • between min 6:30 and 7 i cant understand what you mapped, the camera gets really close and loud and cant seem to understand what you mapped to each pad to view the wave form

  • Brilliant video. Looked for ages to find one that explains what you can do with one of these in my language! On my shopping list!

  • baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

  • Hey thanks for posting - had trouble seeing the workaround for viewing waveforms, what did u select on the screen to do that?

  • last song is music matters mark knight remix right?

  • Have you seen The Thrillseekers using Traktor with the APC40? watch?v=RD1IXOkxOUo

  • what can this do that the apc20 can't? where does the extra £180 go??

  • @PumpkinKyuubi 16 knobs

  • The only issue i have with this work around, is when i reassign the activator to track status the lights on the activator buttons no longer light up. There for i lose the ability to tell what bank I'm on and effecting when using the device control in conjunction with the sends remapping anyone else had this issue? So far i love the Apc 40.

  • can i get the live file for this by any chance?

  • so as far as using this to mix and dj, like oh lets say, trance, would this be an amazing buy?

  • just ordered my apc 40 :D cannot wait gonna be amazing paired up with a xone 2d and turntables :D

  • So glad you made this video, iv been looking at this controller for ableton for the purpose of live performance you and you have just made it very clear that it does a great job. Thanks for the video! Now time to save...

  • So... what's the whole fader situation when you bank select across your tracks? <_<

  • to R&D thx for the cool vid gave me a lot of ideas !! ive tried mapping the solo and the aim buttons but live is juz keeping the color they have when they're mapped i.e if its on its stays on, how can i fix this can someone please help?

  • I dont know wether to have chunks of a track in loops or each individual instrument. It's so true that you have to redesign your thinking around the APC.

  • Riley and durrant..I was just wondering how you get the apc 40 to produce sound to pa systems. I know you guys are using the novation nio but exactly how? thanks for your time

  • Does this have motorized faders?

  • Hi R&D,

I was wondering how you guys go about seting up your apc 40 for live sets...such as live sets. Im asking for this for studio sessions and greatly appeciate the info..!!

    thanks for your time

    dezz

  • Hey R&D,

how do you guys hook up your apc 40 to your PA...during live sets? Im trying to figure

this out to use my apc 40 for studio sessions..thanks for your time!

    dezz

  • @r0bbiekills Hey bro. I'm not riley and durrant, but you just want to run the output from your soundcard to the mixing board in the venue, and the cable from that channel on the board into the speakers.

  • one question, is there a way to cue headphones?, like preview one track before you put it into a mix

  • when your djing with ableton is the tempo already set? Like no beatmatching is required?

  • @thestrokes35 depends if u dont want live to warp the tracks for you then u have to beatmatch urself otherwise as u load a track live waprs it for u and most of the times its right on point so all u have to do is hit play and voila!! its synced! :)

  • live 8 & apc40 = win win situation!!!!!!!

  • R & D: a salesman was trying to talk me into one of these APCs at the shop and I couldnt bring myself to buy it. I have a MPK49 that I use for live sets but I do have a problem with one thing. when I blend one track into another, I want to use the trigger pads to start and stop a loop on the tracks to give me more time to blend. Is there a way to do this or is it easier with the APC40?

  • 6:45 great mapping! :) very useful and i finally found a purpose for the record buttons ;)

  • you guys helped me in my decision to get the APC40. I don't need to tell you guys that ya'll are awesome, but I appreciate good ears and trigger fingers. keep rockin.

  • hello, what is the soundcard you guys are using?

i am between this and the ni audio2 card or the xone2d

  • Loved this video so much I knicked your mapping scheme. One problem, I can't figure out how to set the BPM parameters on my new tempo knob... your help is greatly appreciated!

  • Hit the midi map button on the top right hand corner then select the the bpm window. Note that there is a left and right side to the bpm window. The left represents whole numbers while the right represents decimals. If you assign the left side to a knob, the tempo will move very radically. Choose the right side instead. You'll have to move the knob quite a bit more in order to make huge bpm jumps(like 10 bpm and higher) but for smaller bpm changes it's ideal. Hope this helps.

  • hi mate, just a couple of questions, firstly what soundcard/audio interface do u use to cue up the seperate channels, and secondly how was that djm800 incorporated when u were playing, was the laptop just run through a channel of it or were you using them in tandem somehow. iv got a djm800 and im looking to make the move from cdjs to ableton but i dont want to stop using my djm!!!

  • Thats a Novation Nio. I use the same one. It's a great audio interface with rca stereo outs as well as quarter inch cable inputs. It also has two headphone inputs. You'll be hard-pressed to find an interface that small which can do that much. Oh and it also handles phantom power.

  • Hey Riley & Durrant. DO you ever impliment the apc40 and djm 800 together other than for using it as a channel out to the sound system? if so... how do you like setting it up in that fashion.

  • hey riley & durrant any live show recorded? why dont load them on youtube

  • @felipescalador Hi mate.. We thought about it, but you only get 10mins max for a video so not sure it'd be worth it..?

  • of course it will be worth it... by the way this video is 8 months old?? setup change since then?? like max for live maybe?

  • @RileyAndDurrantMusic

Just so you know, if you email youtube for a "producer account?" I used to have one and there's no limit to the length of the vids... It was VERY easy, although I deleted mine years ago, so I don't know if it's still available. It's worth a try though, right?

  • @RileyAndDurrantMusic its 10hours now :D

  • ARG, I don't know if I should get an APC40 next so I can finally do some live stuff, or if I should buy an analog mixing board to improve my production quality.

If I buy an APC40 it's alot of money just to have only for the sole purpose of doing live stuff in ableton :|

But I guess I'd rather be stuck in the digital domain and have an interesting live show, than sitting next to a computer playing clips with a mouse and being incapable of fading in

Then again I could get a live mixixng boar

  • How about a launchpad? :)

  • @SnoozMusic Haha man, I'm so behind on all this, I had no idea ableton is already has an apc20 and launchpad lol.

The VCM-600 is exactly what I needed, but it doesn't work in 64 bit OS's, damnit!

  • No way? A 1000 box controller that doesn't work with 64 bit?!

  • @Jordo54321 Sounds like you've made up your mind already :)

  • @Jordo54321 - you CAN use the APC40 for any other programs. It just doesn't come mapped for other programs, you'll have to do that manually.

I just dropped on one minutes ago, and can't wait to get it. I expect it to be completely great for Reason too, once it's set up.

  • @Jordo54321 - you CAN use the APC for other programs if you want; you just have to map it. At least, that's what the Akai says. Just ordered the sucker minutes ago, can't wait to get it. : )

  • @Jordo54321 it may be geared to work out the box with ableton, but its genric midi that can be mapped with other software too

  • @Jordo54321 you could most likely set up the apc40 to use for a digital mixer for production with ableton.

  • What is it playing at 8:32 to 8:43 ?

Something really damn familiar but I can't remember what is it.

  • @thayalol Bt - Rose Of Jericho

  • Good post. Question about the effects...Do you guys have a button assigned to turn the effects off and on. For example I tried assigned a delay effect, but even with the knob cranked to the off position, I still have a bit of delay. Please clarify thanks. i might just be using the wrong effect.

  • questions regarding MIDI mapping. When I map buttons manually they no longer light up when I press them. Can you tell me how can I map so the button will light up when i press it. THanks

  • anyone know how to do what they call 'supertrigger'? thanks

  • supatrigga is an au/vst plugin that you can download and drag to a track.

  • That's totally strange that you're limited to 127 to 132 but I don't mess with house/techno so I guess it makes sense..

  • how do you map the global knobs to the bass, delay, filter(s) so that it controls those specific effects for every channel? or do the mappings just correspond to the effects dropped into the master track?

    thanks,

    -rob

  • master effects.

  • Hi Riley&Durrant!

like your video, this help me to do a my choice to buy wounderfull APC40 and starting with Ambleton!

Could u tell me PLZ, you are using NIO 2/4 sound card and which s/c u can recomend to playing in clubs?

    thank you!

  • Hey Riley&Durrant!

Good Job! I have some general questions about your setup, maybe you can give me an answer?!

Your Novation and your Apc are both connected with the Mac? How do you connect the Novation with your mixer? And what about your CDJ's? Is this vid, it seems that you are only working with ableton. Is it also possible to Live-Djing your songs from the CDJ's with the help of the Apc? Or can I sell my CDJ's now?

  • @doenerpirat Hi mate.. The Novation is connected to the mixer via standard phono cables. As for using CDJs, you can still use them side by side with the APC but you can't control them from the APC. I wouldn't sell you CDJs just yet! Its best to always have something on standby in case you computer crashes ;)

  • Thank you so much, ive been trying to figure out switching how to switch wave forms since the akai came out back in june, one more quick question, how or where did you map the highs and mids?

  • @tebrown3 Hi mate - we don't use the hi and mid that much, so we've left those automapped to the fx bank on the right hand side (under the pans) as the APC does this itself.

  • Thanks alot! keep up the good work

  • When you map the waveforms to the mute button, than you cant even use the mute buttons anymore, right?? is there any way to have both parameters on the mute button?

  • The only way i can think of doing that is using the shift key accompanied by the mute button while the other parameter stays the same

  • i thought of that way too...but aint found a way to do that...i dont know how to say Live, that it should change to the waveform-view, when i Press Shift+Mute... how can i force Live, to do this Keycombination? Any ideas? ...greetz

  • if you dont mind answering which racks do you use for your effects? (bass kill, delay etc.) i am new to ableton and the apc 40 and the lite version does not come with any good racks to accomplish these effects... thanks for your time

  • i would recommend to upgrade to fill version... btw: i think APC40 with live lite is like a Porsche with 5 ps...lol

  • You need an external soundcard to connect to a mixer

    DJ RuDe

  • 7.) I cant remember! LOL...nice vid, thanks for the tips...but honestly that Daft Punk sample wrecked the Dinka buildup I think...its nice to just sometimes do simple, not over do it too much...although its hard not to sometimes :P

  • the turn off tip make me laugh man ;) .... I have may be a stupid question but i cant figure out. For example if u have one track playing in audio track 1 , how can u start the track below that one? its the same audio track .....if u hit play in the same channel the first one stops ? ! :S...sorry my poor english man

  • they map the buttons in each row for cue points and have one master volume under it for control of the channel

  • hey is your novation nio compatible with pro tools? or is pro tools only compatible with digidesign products? And is it comptatible with ableton, reason and fruity loops? i'm only asking because i'm trying to figure out which program i want to settle down with... Also, how is your card compared to the presonus firebox?

sorry for the long post.. hope to hear from you! :)

  • Quality video, definitely the most helpful APC40 video on youtube.

    Cheers guys.

  • amaziny helpful....thanks very much....BT.... tune sounds mint

  • Great Video help with your set up with the APC 40 , can you tell me and Im sure others as well would like to know what tracks you used in this tutorial along with the video footage, the dj tracks used. sent pvt message about dj tracks info, get my message, can you help in that regard?

Also if you remap the pan send to what you have , can you get around that without them as you did using a mixer and if you remap the cue level controller on the APC 40 to use as a tempo controller for live?

  • Here you go sitcomwriter2: Intro / Tutorial: 1. Lojak & Kim Fai - Granular (Jorgenssen remix) 2. Spor - Aztec 3. BT - Rose of Jericho Club / Live: 1. Dinka - Chemistry (Jerome Isma Ae Remix) 2. Daft Punk - Technologic (Acapella) 3. Funkagenda & Exacta - Mad Money 4. BT - Rose of Jericho 5. Avicci - Ryu (Laidback Luke Remix) 6. Chris Lake - Violins 7. Can't remember!
  • lol u guys put Spor - Aztec in there ;)

  • I know my question would be kinda nonsense but, here we go, where did you get that stickers or labels? Is that available at any office stores coz I've never seen label that small? I really want one too for my APC40...lol

  • haha.. you need to get one of those labelling machines.. a hand held thing you can get from office/stationary stores where you type into it and print out the top.. google it and you might see what I mean..

  • Comment removed

  • how are you guys routing the high/low pass filters to the send channels?

  • There's a seperate hi and lo pass filter on each of the 8 channels, and we've remapped each of those onto the send banks using the midi mapper in Ableton - eg: click the send bank 3 on the APC then go through each of your hi or lo pass filters.. touching the frequency control in Ableton and then giving the knobs 1-8 a little twist on the APC. That make any sense?

  • Any advice on how to set the APC40 (or any controller for that matter) up for looping in Ableton Live 7?

    Cheers.

  • yeah spor song! good video

  • When you were speaking about calling Ableton to re-map the controls to where you can just flip between waveforms, I could not see what exactly it was that you were mapping in ableton, you said "just select "that" but I could not see your finger. For me this is one of the only issues as well with the APC, once u start playing past the first track u have to keep maunually selecting the track with the mouse to show the waveform on the screen. So what control did u re-map to toggle waveforms? thx!

  • just to the right of each track's stop button there's an area that shows the clip's progress, thats where you click to re-map. i use the rec arm buttons for it, if you use more than the default 8 tracks though it won't move with them.

  • Great video, really informative. What are you using the djm 800 for? How do you cue up tracks in the headphones, I have a mBox 2 , does anyone know how cue tracks in headphones? Any help would be great.

  • anyone know of any info on the best way to manage tracks in Ableton, like how they have done with the colour coding? also do they mean colour coding by 'key' as in key signature or as in the intensity of the song?

  • Such a great video, and you guys are top blokes for all the info you're giving out. Too often making dance music seems to become some secretive task where everyone tries to hide their gear/setups/tracks etc, where as stuff like this helps the whole industry so much. well done.

  • Thanks! Glad to be of help!

  • superb! very helpful. I use the same set up and some of the tricks you gave are just what i wanted to know!! Well done guys!

  • can you use it with ableton 7 ?????????

  • Yes - we use Ableton 7 rather than 8

  • nice video, really explaining.

i got a questione: do you use any external sound interface? if yes, what is it?

  • We use a Novation Nio.. it's great!

  • Top video. Helped me get my head around what I want to do with this unit when I get hold of it. A couple of questions though, what is your routing for the headphones for cueing tracks. I assume you are using an external soundcard of some sort? If so, what would you go for. Also, what spec is your Macbook Pro? Is 4gb of RAM on a basic Macbook Pro enough for running a setup like yours?

  • Glad to help! Re: Headphone routing, we use a Novation Nio USB soundcard and have one of the output channels routed as the pre fade from the APC. The Nio is a great robust soundcard. As for the Apple, we use a standard Macbook rather than the pro (prefer the smaller size) but we've spec'd it up to 2.4 Ghz with 4gb ram. You'll have more than enough power with a Pro

  • man i want one of those! just ordered my first midi controller (m-audio ox' 8 v2) been producing with a mouse and keyboard for 7 years so cant wait for it to arrive so I can get more 'hands on' with my mixes. great vid guys!

  • APC40 what is the little black box beside it

  • I see that you have mapped the bass kills in the 'pan' bank.. but what about your mids and highs? I do think this setup you've gone with is interesting, the supper trigger launch is pretty cool especially ;P

  • We very rarely use the hi and mid eqs in our sets, although you can still get to them from the fx bank below the "pan" area if you want to.

  • How do you eq? with the ableton eq3 mapped or seperate mixer thanks.

  • Yes.. we use an EQ3 on each channel

  • GREAT !! Thanks for the midi mapping tips, got the apc since 2 days, you helped me on the way rock on

  • Such A MAD gadget i love it i want it i BOUGHT IT and its amazing !!!!!

  • Lookin good guys... nice to see the APC in action, I've been after one of these bad boys for a while now... defo gonna have to make the purchase ASAP! Speak soon! Nath C

  • I don't know how long ago this vid was created but the APC40 + Live 8.04switches and shows the waveform view of each clip as you use the Track Select buttons. (well my one does anyway)

So maybe no need for the workaround now?

  • Actually second thoughts, you're right, it doesn't display waveforms when the clips are playing on different scenes...

  • how does he set it up for the bass kill?

    Please help

  • Hi gavintrippe2024

To set up the bass kills you need to drop an "EQ Three" from your Live Devices folder onto each of the Channels you want to effect. Then hit the MIDI button in the top right hand corner til everything goes blue. Now click the "GainLow" of your EQThree on your first track and twist the knob on the APC you want to use. Repeat this on each channel and click the midi button off - you should now have bass kill control.

Also, Song ID at 8.30 is Funkagenda and Exacta "Mad Money"

  • song ID at 8:30 Please

  • great vid. thanks for posting! wish the cameraman could have stayed on the apc40 during the whole show part but still cool. props!

  • I think I'm going to be buying one of these at the end of the month. Thanks for posting this. I prefer the way livecut works over supertrigger. I'm hoping the apc will get me away from looking at the screen during live work.

  • whats the track playing on channel 2 at 6:32?

  • It's BT - Rose of Jericho - hope that helps!

  • Supernice video guys!! This makes me want one even more. Your mapping seems really nice. :)

    Thanks

  • im not the worlds best dj by any means. but isnt this just i button mixing, dispite the flashy midi controller?

i thought traktor dj auto sync was helping the dj, but this? surely any fool could be in that booth that has an index finger and can count to four?

1 button mixing is truely upon us, i still might get one though hehe!

  • In a way... Ableton has taken away the need to physically beat match, but at the end of the day anyone can learn to keep 2 records in time in about 20mins... nowadays the exciting thing is taking "mixing" to the next level, where instead of just concentrating on fading 1 track into another you're layering up music and effects and samples to create new music live. That's the way we look at it anyway :)

  • At last i understood what this thing is about, and how it can be used in a dj environement. So the real work is in the pre-Show. Also thinking that its great for mapping DMX lights to unused tracks. Great Vid.

  • Awesome video! Great to see how you set it up, and seeing it being used in anger. Just interested if you've ever had a laptop lock up on you in a live situation, or if you're running a backup machine etc.

  • Not yet.. Macbooks are pretty reliable and very very rarely crash. The only time things have gone wring have been down to "user error" :-)

Wouldn't recommend using a Windows PC though...

  • Not that I am a PC zealot, macs are nice, but PC laptops are fine for computer DJing.

I've been at it for years on a PC.

  • What is the opening track?

  • can you prelisten to the tracks that you are about to launch?

  • Yes, if you have a sound card that has a couple of channels. There is a pre-listen mode for 8 channels and a headphone volume control.

  • Can you explain setting the send to mid / treble etc. Tried it at the weekend and got one button changed and al 8 knob set, but then it wouldnt let me move to another button Cheers.

    akaiapc40 com

  • I notice you have a Novation Nio soundcard. Do I need one of those also?

  • you only need a sound-card if you want to have a separate monitor output (for prelistining to tracks that will not play out of the main output)

  • Nice, thanks for the walkthrough

What did the que knob do before it was remapped?

Also, do you ever accidently bump the faders? I guess since theyre not motorized if you opened a new session without resetting the faders to 0 first, if you bump it i'm guessing it'd instantly warp the bus volume to whatever it was previously set at in the last session?

Also, did you have to register the APC to your ableton software to use it? Or can you just bring it over to a friends and use it on whichever one

  • lovin that waveform map. about to use that with my cue buttons since i already have the cue knob set to tempo control

  • good vid ive gone from ableton to traktor to cd decks now im thinkin hmmm back to abe

  • Very NICE!! what about you EQ's ? Are you running 1 stereo Pair to the Club mixer ? & equalizing with it ? thankx!!

  • Can yu explain the work around for toggleing throught the waveforms as i couldnt hear yu over the music? ta

  • Basically.. you need to have a track playing in whichever channels you want to map, so that the time remaining / pie is showing and counting down (in the little box just above the faders) Click your midi map button in the top right and then map the actual box with the time/pie in it to the APCs "Activator" buttons.. Do this for each channel, then whenever you click the "Activator" button on the APC, Ableton will show you whatever is playing on that channel.. Hope that helps..

  • i bought this recently it is the utter mutts nuts, going live with it (pardon the pun) next month as only got into ableton recently too..

  • do they use the djm 800 aswell? or the apc40 only ?

  • We do use the DJM mate - but all the actual Ableton mixing just comes through 1 Channel on the DJM - so it's like 8 Channels going into 1 on the DJM so we can still play CDs etc if we need. We've found that works best as you never know what kind of mixer you're gonna be faced with when you turn up at a club!

  • great, thanks for that :)

  • akaiapc40 com

  • im no dj but im a fuckin controller freak, and this is nice. i dont use ableton much so im not getting this but if the come out wit a rpc for reason im on.

  • reason lacks the clip functionality. Closest way to get it would be a Rex-based sample rack, and some matrix or thor step sequencers for midi. either way it's hassle just to get the look-slash-feel-alike functionality.

  • Yea it would be a hassle for the most part the only thing i could see being done if anything is matrix and RPG8 model with a remix ontop some where but then again why? hahahaha

  • cool vid thanks

    Grieve28

    what i understood is

it aplys (sends the track) to get full "wet" FX of selected track...

  • 0:32 LOL --- "suiting" the minds perfectly...

    undress up to adress

  • Brilliant clip guys, like your remapping, dont fully understand what you have done with the super trigger though?

Check out akaiapc40 com and please feel free to leave any more clips or info.

  • Sorry - didn't explain that very well dude - basically there's a Supatrigga plugin on each channel, set to a decent level of repeat/reverse etc, and we've map the button on the APC to just turn it on and off (like the power button).. so as soon as you turn it on the fx starts. Does that make sense?
