I remember seeing this at the movie theater near my home in Los Angeles, one week after it opened. My church went as a group, along a few other churces. The auditorium was filled. You can't imagine seeing a film like this with nearly 300 like-minded people, on a huge screen. During the intermission, no one really wanted to leave their seats and when it was completed and the lights brought up, not a dry eye could be found in the place. I know for many may not be the greatest interpretation of the life of Christ but whenever I hear this opening theme it just stirs me to the point where the hairs on my arms just stand up. Miklos Rosza was a genius as a movie score composer. The only other composer who came close to him was Jerry Goldsmith. The only other composer who came in third for me was Franz Waxman- Taras Bulba.

I remember watching this movie on TV every year when I was a kid. I was captivated by it and found it so powerfully emotive it's not funny. They don't air it in Australia anymore because we're not allowed to offend Jews and Muslims, as the population of both has steadily increased over the past decade and we're slowly losing all our traditions. One of the greatest movies on this topic ever. A true labor of love. Jeffrey Hunter always mesmerized me with his radiant portrayal of the man who preached love, forgiveness and peace. If only more heeded that message instead of succumbing to hatred, violence and degenerate cruelty. One need not be a Christian to understand the value of the man's wisdom. (I am one, mind you. Interesting movie, but...the Roman throwing spears are wrong and the temple is not accuately or, shall I say, realistically portrayed. The Jewish temple in Jerusalem would make a modern American slaughter house look pristine by comparison. There was blood everywhere. The closest comparison? The pyramids drenched with blood from Aztec sacrafice rituals. True, the Jews killed harmless farm animals, but the smell is the same.

I know for many may not be the greatest interpretation of the life of Christ but whenever I hear this opening theme it just stirs me to the point where the hairs on my arms just stand up. Miklos Rosza was a genius as a movie score composer. The only other composer who came close to him was Jerry Goldsmith. The only other composer who came in third for me was Franz Waxman- Taras Bulba.

I remember watching this movie on TV every year when I was a kid. I was captivated by it and found it so powerfully emotive it's not funny. They don't air it in Australia anymore because we're not allowed to offend Jews and Muslims, as the population of both has steadily increased over the past decade and we're slowly losing all our traditions. Still, seeing it now takes me back to my childhood and reminds me of long, hot summers in Sydney. That's when it was aired, every December. I love it!

If you have a bible, read the book of Isaiah chapter 53, one of the greatest if not THE greatest prophecy on coming Christ. It actually says "For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him".
Of course this doesn't make him any less divine .

Prettiest score of them all. Rozsa was one of the greatest artists of 20th century music. A beautiful fairy tale as well. It always thrills me to imagine that a human could be born superior to all his fellows in every strength. And that he would have the realization that what Europeans call the soul", (but for which other believers of other fairy tales have different names) are of all of them suspectible to an incomprehensibly terrible fate...or just to give a little hope.
